You can drive in Brazil on a foreign license for up to 180 days from your date of entry only if your license is covered by an international convention or agreement ratified by Brazil and remains valid. The documents you need depend on the agreement that applies to the country that issued them; some drivers must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their license. Check your eligibility and documents with Brazil’s Ministry of Transport before driving.
Can you drive in Brazil with a foreign license?
Brazil does not automatically accept every foreign license. The Ministry of Transport says a foreign-licensed visitor may drive for up to 180 days if the driver is covered by an applicable international convention or agreement ratified and approved by Brazil, and the original license remains valid. Check the Ministry’s foreign-license guidance and its linked list of contracting parties against the country that issued your documents.
Carry the documents the Ministry specifies:
- Your valid foreign driver’s license.
- A valid IDP together with the license if the relevant documents were issued by a contracting party to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. An IDP is not a substitute for your license.
- Identification.
- A document proving the date you entered Brazil.
The requirement turns on applicable agreements and the issuing country—not simply the language or format of your license. Do not assume that a license from your home country is sufficient without checking its status.
Can you drive in Brazil with a US license?
That depends on whether the applicable agreement covers the license and documents issued to you. The Ministry’s rule is not a blanket acceptance of all foreign licenses, including US licenses. Check the Ministry’s contracting-party information and carry any IDP required for your situation, along with your valid US license.

When does the 180-day limit start, and what happens after it?
The 180-day period starts on the date you enter Brazil, not the date you first drive. CONTRAN Resolution 1,020, Article 102(1), states: “O prazo a que se refere o caput iniciar-se-á a partir da data de entrada do condutor no âmbito territorial brasileiro.” The Ministry’s guidance was updated on May 11, 2026; the resolution is dated December 1, 2025.
If you remain in Brazil beyond 180 days and want to keep driving, the applicable process involves physical and mental fitness examinations and a psychological assessment in the relevant driver category as part of obtaining a Brazilian CNH (national driver’s license). The Ministry and resolution describe a separate DETRAN exchange process for licenses Brazil does not recognize; it includes relevant examinations and a driving test. The Ministry specifically notes reciprocal exchange agreements for drivers from Spain, Italy and Mozambique. Contact the DETRAN in the state where you are staying for local documents and scheduling, and check the current rules before your 180 days expire.

What should you plan for on Brazilian roads?
Government travel advice from the UK and United States describes driving in Brazil as hazardous. Conditions vary by route: rural roads away from main highways may be in poor condition, traffic can be dense, and flooding can make some Amazon routes impassable for much of the year. These are broad advisories rather than live road reports, so check local conditions and weather for your route and travel dates.
Plan for breakdowns and emergencies
The U.S. travel advisory says toll roads have their own services, while roadside assistance away from toll roads is rare and may depend on informal help from local mechanics. It identifies 193 as an emergency number for local fire departments; operators speak Portuguese only. Plan how you will communicate your location and request help, especially on rural or remote routes. The UK travel advice says to report accidents immediately to police by calling 190 or going to a police station.

The U.S. travel advisory summarizes these requirements and precautions; confirm current law, exceptions and the rules for your vehicle and route:
- Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seat belt.
- Child seats are required for children under 7½; children aged 7½ to 10 must ride in the back seat. If traveling with a child, check the child’s size, the seat’s vehicle compatibility, and whether your rental provider can supply an appropriate restraint.
- On federal highways, daytime running lights must be on during the day, and headlights must be on at night.
- Brazil’s Lei Seca prohibits driving with any measurable blood-alcohol level, according to the advisory. Check current statutory wording and penalties, and do not drink and drive.
Driving or using ride-hailing: what should you weigh?
Driving gives you control over your itinerary and departure time, but it also means handling license eligibility and paperwork, variable road conditions, parking and any breakdown or language challenges. Ride-hailing avoids the need to drive yourself, but still requires care at pickup and attention during the trip. Neither option is established as universally safer or cheaper; the better fit depends on your route, schedule, documents and comfort with local conditions.

UK travel advice recommends booking through an official app rather than hailing a taxi on the street. At airports, use designated pickup areas or authorized taxi booths. Before getting in, compare the driver and vehicle registration with the booking; stay alert to unexpected route or destination changes, and use trip tracking and location-sharing features where available. Wait in a safe place while you confirm the pickup.
