You can drive in Aruba with a valid foreign license, but rental companies may set additional requirements. Drive on the right, stop at red lights (right turns on red are not allowed), and follow posted speed signs. A standard car suits ordinary paved-road sightseeing; consider a four-wheel-drive vehicle only if your planned, permitted route includes rougher roads. Confirm the exact license, age, deposit, insurance, and road-use terms with your rental company before booking.

Which side of the road do you drive on in Aruba?

Traffic keeps to the right, and you overtake on the left. Aruba.com lists general speed limits of 30 km/h in urban areas, 60 km/h outside town, and 80 km/h on faster roads; follow the posted signs for the road you are on. Aruba.com’s driving guidance provides these figures but does not state a publication date.

Priority at intersections and roundabouts

  • Vehicles already on a roundabout have priority.
  • At an unsigned crossroad, give priority to traffic coming from the right.
  • When turning left, yield to opposing traffic.
  • Stop at red lights. Right turns on red are not allowed.

The last rule is explicit in Aruba’s Code of Conduct; do not assume the right-on-red rule from another country applies.

Can you drive in Aruba with a US license?

Aruba Tourism Authority visitor materials say foreign and international driving licenses are accepted. That general visitor guidance does not guarantee that every rental company will accept a particular license or situation. Aruba.com says rental companies usually require an international driving license or a valid license held for at least two full years. Check directly with the provider you plan to use before paying or collecting the vehicle. Aruba.com’s rental guidance does not state a publication date; the Tourism Authority destination guide is older, published around 2017.

What to confirm with the rental company

  • Whether your license is accepted and whether an international permit or minimum holding period applies.
  • The minimum driver age, which varies by company.
  • The deposit and payment-card rules. Aruba.com says a US$500 deposit or an open, signed credit card is common, not universal.
  • What insurance covers, what it excludes, and whether the vehicle may be taken on your intended roads.

Aruba.com recommends insurance and says it is not valid if the driver is intoxicated in an accident. Read the policy and ask the provider how its exclusions apply to your route.

Do you need a 4×4 in Aruba?

Not for ordinary sightseeing on paved roads: the available visitor guidance does not establish a general need for four-wheel drive. The Aruba Tourism Authority’s older destination guide calls it a good idea for off-the-beaten-path interior routes and the windward coast. Choose the vehicle for the actual road surface and confirm that the rental agreement permits your route.

Planned driving Practical vehicle choice Important condition
Resort areas and ordinary paved-road sightseeing A standard vehicle is generally suitable based on the visitor guidance. Follow posted signs and the rental company’s terms.
Rougher interior routes or the windward coast Consider four-wheel drive, as suggested by the older Aruba Tourism Authority destination guide. Stay on permitted roads; north-coast visitor guidance says to use main dirt roads and not speed.
Beaches, dunes, or driving into the ocean No vehicle choice makes this permitted. Aruba’s Code of Conduct prohibits driving or parking there.

What should you know about rain, dirt roads, and fuel?

Wet and rugged roads

Roads can become slick after rain, so slow down and leave more room to stop. On the rugged north coast, stay on main dirt roads and avoid speeding. Driving or parking on beaches and dunes is prohibited; these are visitor-conduct rules, not just advice to protect a rental vehicle. Aruba.com states: “Driving or parking on beaches, dunes and in the ocean is prohibited.”

Fueling up

Aruba.com says most gas stations are attended. At a self-service station, pay before pumping. The same visitor page says fuel prices are government-regulated and the same across stations; it gives no current price, so check locally for the amount in effect.

How does parking work in Oranjestad?

Downtown Oranjestad has paid parking. Official guidance describes white-marked spaces as regular paid spaces and yellow spaces as reserved for employees and permit holders. Aruba.com’s getting-around page lists AruParking operating Monday through Saturday, 7 AM–9 PM, but check the signs and meter at the space for the applicable instructions and payment details. Aruba.com’s getting-around page does not state a publication date.

Should you rent a car or use other transport?

A rental car offers flexibility for visitors comfortable driving in unfamiliar conditions. If you would rather not drive, Aruba.com lists taxis, public transportation, and shuttles as alternatives; its visitor information does not provide a universal cost comparison. An older Tourism Authority destination guide recommends learning road signs that differ from those in the United States and says most rental companies provide maps with a sign key. A map can be a useful paper backup if you want one, but it is not a requirement.

Before you set off

  1. Confirm your license, minimum age, deposit, insurance coverage, and permitted roads with the rental company.
  2. Set your route and choose a vehicle suited to its road surfaces; do not plan to drive on beaches or dunes.
  3. Review the road signs and follow posted speed limits, giving way according to local priority rules.
  4. Check parking signs and meters in Oranjestad, and use extra caution after rain.
