Highway 1 in Northern California is best treated as a flexible coastal route, not a nonstop drive with guaranteed open roads. Plan around the places you want to visit—Point Reyes, the Sonoma coast and Mendocino County—and check Caltrans for current conditions just before you leave.

How to plan a Northern California Highway 1 drive

Visit California describes the full Pacific Coast Highway/Highway 1 corridor as running from Dana Point in Orange County to Leggett in Mendocino County. For a Northern California trip, useful anchors are Marin and Point Reyes, the Sonoma coast, and Mendocino County, including Fort Bragg and the route north toward Leggett. These are connected by a scenic corridor of communities and park access roads, not by an uninterrupted stretch of coast road with every destination directly beside the highway.

For a south-to-north drive, the ocean is generally on your left, matching the orientation used in Visit California’s scenic-stops guide. You can also travel north to south; choose the direction that suits your starting point and schedule rather than treating one as mandatory.

Choose a route length that fits your time

  • Short outing: Choose one coastal area and a nearby town or overlook. Avoid trying to fit Point Reyes, Sonoma and Mendocino into a rushed day.
  • Longer trip: Allow time for a Point Reyes detour and walks, then continue along the Sonoma coast and into Mendocino County for additional stops.
  • Flexible itinerary: Keep the order of stops adjustable. Traffic controls, roadwork and access restrictions can affect the route, and a reliable drive-time estimate requires fixed endpoints, stops and current conditions.

Point Reyes is a substantial detour rather than a quick pullout: destinations are reached on roads within the park, and activities may involve walking. Check park access and local conditions for each planned stop.

Where to stop between Marin and Mendocino

Point Reyes National Seashore

About 30 miles north of San Francisco, Point Reyes can be approached from Highway 1 or other roads. The National Park Service recommends starting at the Bear Valley Visitor Center to get oriented and learn about activities and road, trail and other closures. From there, the park’s destinations include beaches, the lighthouse, Cypress Tree Tunnel, Chimney Rock, Tomales Point and trailheads; reaching them means driving park roads and, for many outings, taking a walk.

The National Park Service describes Point Reyes as having “approximately 80 miles of shoreline” (the accessed page does not display a publication year) and “about 150 miles of trail” (the accessed page does not display a publication year). Trails support activities including hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, although some uses are restricted on particular trails. Check current park guidance before choosing a trail or activity.

Rand McNally Easy to Fold: Northern California Laminated Map
  • Easy to fold means no fumbling
  • Heavy-duty lamination allows you to write on, wipe off
  • Durable and tear resistant

The Point Reyes headlands and beaches are noted by the NPS as places to view the annual gray whale migration, best from January through April. This is seasonal viewing guidance, not a guarantee of sightings.

Sonoma coast

Continue north along the coast for Sonoma-area stops, checking local access information as you choose beaches, viewpoints or communities. The National Park Service’s Northern California road-trip itinerary includes Fort Ross State Park among its stops, making it a useful historic detour to consider along this stretch.

Mendocino County and Fort Bragg

Further north, Mendocino County provides the next major coastal section, with Fort Bragg as a useful town anchor and Leggett marking the northward end of Visit California’s Highway 1 corridor. Allow time for the stops you choose instead of relying on a single end-to-end timing; work zones and individual detours can change the day’s pace.

Check Highway 1 conditions before and during the drive

Use Caltrans as the authoritative source for state-route conditions. Check the Caltrans QuickMap or the Caltrans road-information page immediately before setting out, and check again during the trip if your route or timing changes. Visit California’s Highway 1 guide likewise advises travelers to check QuickMap before traveling.

A Caltrans State Route 1 report dated September 29, 2026, described one-way controlled traffic in Gualala and north of Point Arena, including a rock-slide-related control with delays of up to 10 minutes, as well as construction or emergency-repair controls elsewhere. That dated snapshot is not a prediction of conditions on your travel date; closures and controls can change.

Plan Point Reyes access around your vehicle

Some Point Reyes roads and parking areas do not accommodate recreational vehicles or vehicles towing trailers. If you are traveling with a large rig, verify constraints with the park before choosing a destination. The NPS suggests parking an RV or trailer in a suitable area and using a passenger vehicle on park roads when needed. Follow official park directions rather than relying on a GPS route as a substitute.

Rand McNally Easy to Fold: United States Laminated Map
  • Teach geography using the Rand McNally United States Interstate Fold Map. This folded interstate map is complete with clearly indicated cartography and points of interest.
  • Folded map features all Interstate and U.S. highways.
  • Clear, easy-to-read cartography.
  • Clearly indicated cities, points of interest, airports, boundaries and more.
  • Complete with highways, state boundaries, points of interest, national parks and a quick-reference legend.

A printed California road map or road atlas can help with broad orientation when planning multiple stops, and the NPS provides official maps for park visitors. Paper maps do not show live closures, so use Caltrans for current road conditions.

When is the best time to drive Highway 1?

There is no single best season for every traveler. The right choice depends on priorities such as daylight, weather, crowds, park access and the roadwork or controls in effect for your dates. If gray whale viewing at Point Reyes is a priority, the NPS identifies January through April as the best period for migration viewing, but sightings are not assured. For any season, check park access and Caltrans conditions close to departure.

Keep Big Sur separate from Northern California planning

Big Sur is often included in broader Highway 1 itineraries, but it lies south of the Northern California route focus here. The Associated Press reported that a 90-mile Big Sur section reopened on January 14, 2026, after three years of repairs; Visit California also described that section as fully open as of that date. Those reports concern Big Sur and do not establish current conditions on Highway 1 in Northern California.
