The 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N makes a compelling case that an electric performance car can feel involving without a real gearbox or combustion engine. Its appeal is not just headline output: simulated shifts, configurable sounds and a short-lived boost mode give the driver more to engage with. That is a distinctive experience, not proof that it outperforms every rival. In the U.S., its reported 221-mile EPA-estimated range and $67,800 starting price are meaningful trade-offs.
Why the IONIQ 5 N feels different
Many fast EVs deliver acceleration with little ceremony: press the pedal and power arrives. Hyundai takes another route in the IONIQ 5 N, adding controls and effects intended to make that power feel more interactive. The car’s pitch is as much about driver feedback as outright speed.
N e-Shift: simulated shifts, not a gearbox
N e-Shift simulates the sensation of changing gears. Hyundai describes it as part of an effort to give drivers a more familiar shifting experience. The sensation is software-generated; it does not mean the car has a conventional multi-speed transmission.
N Active Sound+: configurable sound
N Active Sound+ complements N e-Shift with configurable sounds, including futuristic EV tones and engine- or exhaust-like effects. These are designed sounds, not evidence of a combustion engine. Together, the simulated shifts and sound give the driver more cues to respond to than a quiet, uninterrupted surge alone.

N Grin Boost: a temporary power increase
Hyundai USA says engaging N Grin Boost raises output to 641 hp (478 kW) for 10 seconds. Hyundai’s global specification page gives 650 PS (also 478 kW) with the boost. The hp and PS figures use different units, and the pages describe different market contexts; they should not be treated as contradictory or swapped without qualification. The feature is a temporary maximum-acceleration mode, not the car’s continuously available output.

Hyundai’s global specification page lists the following equipment and figures for the IONIQ 5 N. Hyundai warns that features and specifications may vary by country or region, so confirm the specification for the market where the car is sold.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. In particular, the 18-minute charging figure is Hyundai’s stated time for a 350 kW charging setup; charging performance in use can depend on conditions and equipment.
U.S. price, range and acceleration context
An Associated Press report featuring Edmunds content put the 2025 IONIQ 5 N’s U.S. starting price at $67,800 and its EPA-estimated range at 221 miles. The same report gives an Edmunds-tested 0–60 mph time of 3.3 seconds. The acceleration figure is Edmunds’ test result as reported by AP, not a result from this article. Price and range are market- and configuration-specific figures; check current U.S. listings and vehicle details before buying.

The figures show the shape of the trade-off: the IONIQ 5 N is positioned for high-performance driving, while its reported EPA range is modest beside many less performance-focused EVs. The range figure alone does not establish real-world range on a track or on a particular route, and the 0–60 result does not establish superiority over competitors.

That is a subjective description of the experience, not a demonstrated head-to-head verdict. The IONIQ 5 N’s strongest differentiator in the available specifications and feature descriptions is how it tries to involve the driver: simulated shifts, layered sound, and a temporary boost mode sit alongside track-oriented hardware such as large brakes and 21-inch tires.

A fair comparison with another performance EV needs matching model years, markets and test conditions. Useful points of comparison include acceleration and repeatability, track hardware and thermal management, driver-feedback features, usable range and charging, price, and everyday practicality. The available figures do not support scoring rivals or ranking the IONIQ 5 N above all of them. A simulated shift can make driving feel more involving, but it is not a substitute for measured performance evidence.
What to check before buying or replacing tires
For a U.S. buyer, confirm the exact model-year configuration, current price and applicable range rating with the seller. If replacing tires, Hyundai’s global specification lists Pirelli P-Zero tires in 275/35R21. Verify the vehicle-specific fitment and required load rating, as well as the seller’s exact listing and availability, before ordering.
