But the public evidence described so far does not independently establish that the tested cell has a solid electrolyte, prove the advertised 100,000-cycle life, or verify that customer motorcycles deliver every advertised range and charging figure. The fairest verdict is promising performance claims with important proof still missing—not a confirmed solid-state breakthrough, and not evidence that the claims are false.
What Donut Lab claimed, and what has been reported
Donut Lab introduced its battery on 5 January 2026 as an all-solid-state design ready for original-equipment vehicle production. Its launch announcement claimed 400 Wh/kg, a full charge in five minutes, up to 100,000 cycles, and more than 99% capacity retention at both −30°C and above 100°C. The company also said Verge motorcycles would be on the road in Q1 2026 and described a long-range model capable of 600 km. These are the company’s launch claims, not a single independently verified test result.
Since then, the public evidence has covered different samples and levels of the system: a Verge motorcycle pack charging demonstration, an energy-optimised cell measured for energy density, and a separate next-generation sample subjected to elemental analysis. Those results should not be combined as though they all came from one production cell installed in customer bikes.
| Question | What has been reported | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Does the Verge pack charge quickly? | Donut Lab reported a pack charging from 10% to 70% in just over nine minutes. | Evidence of a particular company-reported pack test; not a five-minute full charge. |
| Is the energy density high? | VTT reportedly measured 409 Wh/kg and 805 Wh/L on an energy-optimised cell. | A result for that cell and test, not proof of whole-pack density, chemistry, or production consistency. |
| Is the electrolyte proven solid? | Donut Lab reported elemental-analysis results for a next-generation sample. | Relevant to reported composition, but the disclosed values do not by themselves show the electrolyte’s physical state. |
| Has it demonstrated 100,000 cycles? | No completed test at that duration is established by the cited public evidence. | The cycle-life figure remains a company claim. |
What did the Verge motorcycle charging test show?
In a 16 March 2026 announcement, Donut Lab described a test conducted with Verge Motorcycles on an earlier-generation motorcycle fitted with a new model-year battery pack. The company identified the pack as nominally 18 kWh and said it began at about 20°C. It reported that charging power exceeded 100 kW (5C) for five minutes as the displayed state of charge rose from 10% to 50%. The same announcement reported 10% to 70% in just over nine minutes and 10% to 80% in 12 minutes.

That is a meaningful reported fast-charge result, but it is not the launch claim of a complete charge in five minutes. The release does not provide a full independent test record, including charger output over time, ambient conditions, measurement uncertainty, repeat runs, or pack age. Donut Lab’s announcement is therefore evidence of what the company says its test pack did, not a complete third-party validation of routine charging in customer use.
Verge CEO Tuomo Lehtimäki said the tested pack was the standard model and that an extended-range version was also available with approximately two-thirds more capacity. That description pertains to the demonstration configuration; it should not be assumed to identify every current TS Pro battery option.

What does the 409 Wh/kg VTT result prove?
Donut Lab’s 2 September 2026 release says VTT measured 409 Wh/kg and 805 Wh/L on an energy-optimised cell. Donut Lab described it as having the same chemistry as cells in earlier tests, but optimised for energy density. Electrek’s account of the underlying VTT test identifies the sample as a DL6 V1.5 cell and reports 409.3 Wh/kg and 804.7 Wh/L. It says the cell was discharged over 2.3–4.25 V at 0.1C and 25°C.
The result is a cell-level energy-density measurement under specified conditions. It is not a measurement of a complete motorcycle battery pack, which includes components beyond the cell, and it does not establish that all cells in production will match the tested sample. Nor does energy density identify the electrolyte’s physical state or demonstrate how the cell performs over a very long service life. Donut Lab’s reported result is notable; its scope is narrower than a validation of the entire product.

Do the chemistry results prove it is all-solid-state?
On 23 September 2026, Donut Lab said Intertek UK analyzed active components from a next-generation cell using nitric-acid dissolution and UKAS-accredited ICP-OES. Donut Lab’s summary reports 3.4 ppm lithium and 632 ppm sodium. The company interprets those values as evidence against lithium-ion or sodium-ion active chemistry. It also says Intertek confirmed a bipolar cell structure in separate work, from which Donut Lab infers that the electrolyte must be solid.
Those are Donut Lab’s descriptions and interpretation of commissioned testing. Elemental concentrations and cell architecture are not the same measurement as whether an electrolyte is solid. The disclosed elemental values alone do not establish that physical property. The sample is described as next-generation; the public summary does not establish that it is the same cell as the VTT energy-density sample, the Verge demonstration pack, or the cells in delivered motorcycles. A direct examination of the relevant cell or a sufficiently detailed laboratory report would be needed to resolve those distinctions.

Has Donut Lab shown a 100,000-cycle battery?
No completed 100,000-cycle result is established by the cited public evidence. The company has announced investigations involving charging, high-temperature capacity, charge retention, pack-level charging, and a cell damaged during high-temperature testing. These tests address different performance or safety questions; none of the described results demonstrates the full advertised cycle life.
In the damaged-cell test, Donut Lab reported that capacity stabilized around 11 Ah, compared with an original 25 Ah, during 50 cycles at 5C after the cell’s vacuum structure had broken. The company explicitly characterized this as a safety test of damaged-cell behavior, not a battery-life test. It cannot be used as proof of the headline cycle-life claim.

Cycle-life claims require a stated definition of a cycle and end-of-life capacity, as well as test conditions such as charge and discharge rates, temperature, depth of discharge, and sample count. A short-duration charging result or a charge-retention test cannot substitute for that evidence.
What does Verge currently advertise for the TS Pro?
Verge’s TS Pro product page lists 20.2 kWh and 33.3 kWh battery options, ranges of up to 350 km and 600 km, and CCS fast charging. It estimates delivery in Q4 2026 for the EU and US, and Q4 2027 for the UK and other regions. These are manufacturer specifications and forward-looking delivery estimates, not independent measurements or confirmation that customers have received bikes with a particular verified cell generation.
The delivery estimates also provide useful context for the earlier announcement that motorcycles would be on the road in Q1 2026. That January statement was a company forecast; the current product-page estimates are the later stated schedule for the listed regions. Neither statement alone verifies the battery chemistry in a delivered vehicle.
How to judge the “solid-state or hype” question
- Fast charging: There is a specific company-reported motorcycle-pack result, with the test conditions and state-of-charge window described above. It supports a fast-charge demonstration, not the claim that the motorcycle charges fully in five minutes.
- Energy density: VTT reportedly measured a strong result on a named energy-optimised cell. That is not equivalent to a pack-level or production-wide result.
- Solid-state chemistry: Donut Lab markets the battery as all-solid-state, but the disclosed Intertek elemental figures do not independently prove a solid electrolyte.
- Lifetime: The cited public test series does not demonstrate 100,000 cycles.
- Customer product: Verge advertises the technology, specifications, and estimated delivery windows. Those listings do not independently verify the chemistry or performance of customer-delivered motorcycles.
So, “hype” is too dismissive of the reported test results, while “proven solid-state battery” goes beyond what the public evidence establishes. Donut Lab has described potentially impressive cell and pack performance. The central unresolved questions are whether the relevant production cell is demonstrably all-solid-state, whether the performance carries across generations and manufactured units, and whether the promised long-term cycle life holds under a documented test.
