February 2025 reports said DOGE-associated federal workforce reductions affected the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including staff working on automated-vehicle safety. The Washington Post reported an expected agency-wide loss of 70–80 employees, roughly one-tenth of the workforce, and said the specialized safety group would lose a substantially larger share. NHTSA, by contrast, characterized the positions cut as a “modest” amount, according to the Associated Press. The reported figures are attributed estimates, not a confirmed public tally.
What was reported about the NHTSA cuts?
In February 2025, news reports described NHTSA personnel as affected by reductions associated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The Washington Post reported that 70–80 employees—about one-tenth of the agency—were expected to leave, based on people briefed on the reductions. It also reported that the automated-vehicle safety group would lose a much larger share than the agency overall. The available reporting does not provide an independently audited count for that team. The Associated Press reported NHTSA’s characterization of the positions cut as a “modest” amount. The agency also said it would “enforce the law on all manufacturers of motor vehicles and equipment.” Those are the agency’s stated position and commitment, not an independent measure of how much staffing capacity remained. A Senate minority staff memorandum cited a separate figure of 30 NHTSA workers cut in February, but its footnote points to Financial Times reporting. That is a secondhand cited figure, not an official agency count, and it should not be added to the Post’s estimate: the figures may cover overlapping or differently scoped changes. Why automated-vehicle safety staffing matters to Tesla
NHTSA investigates potential motor-vehicle safety defects and oversees compliance across manufacturers. It is not a Tesla-only regulator. Its work can include investigating crashes involving driver-assistance systems, examining safety concerns and requiring crash-data reporting from automakers using self-driving technology, as AP described. Tesla is relevant because its partially automated driving systems have drawn agency scrutiny. In April 2024, NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation documented a technical briefing request and Tesla’s briefing concerning Full Self-Driving (Supervised). What the later Cybercab investigation does—and does not—show
NHTSA’s press-release index lists a September 4, 2026 investigation into Tesla Cybercab self-certification following deployment in Austin. This establishes that the agency continued to announce public oversight activity after the reported 2025 cuts. It does not show whether the cuts weakened oversight, delayed work, or had no effect. The cited accounts establish that cuts were reported and that automated-vehicle safety staff were described as disproportionately affected. They do not quantify any resulting change in investigation speed, investigation quality, enforcement, or traffic-safety outcomes. Nor does the later Cybercab announcement settle that question. A staffing estimate and evidence of subsequent agency activity are not a causal assessment of regulatory capacity.
