BMW historical material uses “BMW Z2” as an internal designation for a proposed Z1 coupé platform study, but says the concept was not taken further. The name appeared in BMW’s records; the evidence does not establish a customer-sold Z2 roadster or coupé.
Was there ever a BMW Z2 roadster?
BMW Group’s March 2010 media information describes benchmarks for a Z1 coupé platform project that were designated internally as the BMW Z2. The related “off-roadster” remained a study in wood, clay and plastic. BMW’s wording is direct: “the concept was not taken any further.”
That makes “BMW Z2” a real name in BMW’s historical material, but not the name of a documented production model. The evidence does not support calling the study a finished prototype road car, saying it was sold to customers, or treating it as a production generation that BMW simply skipped.
Where does the Z2 fit in BMW’s roadster history?
The production lineage helps explain the confusion. BMW says the Z3 roadster launched in 1995 and identifies the Z4, introduced in 2002, as the Z3’s direct successor. The internal Z2 study does not sit between those cars as a marketed model.

BMW M reports that 15,322 Z3 M Roadsters were built from 1996 to 2002 in its 2022 history of the Z3 M Roadster. That production figure concerns the Z3 M Roadster only; it is not evidence of Z2 production.
What about the current BMW Z4?
BMW announced a Z4 Final Edition in November 2025 and said Z4 production would conclude in 2026. BMW’s US announcement gives a February–April 2026 production window, while BMW M’s November 26, 2025 article says production ends in March 2026. These are announcement details, and the sources specify different windows; they do not establish that production has since ended.

BMW’s US announcement of the Z4 Final Edition is useful current context, but it does not change the historical status of the Z2 designation.
