For the rear-wheel-drive electric CLA 250+ that reviewer Myriam Joire drove, the answer was yes: she praised its ride, steering, handling, cabin comfort and materials. Her few-hours drive suggests the technology did not overwhelm the fundamentals of driving, though it is not evidence about long-term ownership or the hybrid CLA.
What the electric CLA felt like on the road
In a January 7, 2026 road test, Tom’s Guide contributor Myriam Joire drove a rear-wheel-drive electric CLA 250+ for a few hours. She described its chassis as well tuned, with playful handling that did not come at the expense of ride quality. She also praised the quick, precise steering, quiet cabin, comfort and materials. Those are her firsthand impressions of that car, not the result of a long-term test or our own drive. Read the Tom’s Guide road test.
Her strongest evidence for the “real car” case is how ordinary driving qualities held up alongside the digital features: the CLA felt composed and comfortable rather than like a technology demonstration. But one short launch-period drive cannot establish reliability, daily usability over months, or whether every version feels the same.
One control drew criticism
Joire found the two-window-switch-and-toggle arrangement awkward. That is a useful counterpoint to her positive impressions of the cabin and interface: modern software does not guarantee that every physical control is intuitive.

Which 2026 CLA are you considering?
The CLA name now covers distinct powertrains. The independent test described above was of the electric, rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+. It did not test the electric all-wheel-drive CLA 350 or the hybrid, so the driving impressions should not be applied automatically to either.
| Version | Powertrain and drive | Published U.S. output and range | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CLA 250+ with EQ Technology | All-electric, rear-wheel drive | 268 hp; EPA range up to 374 miles | Only version in the cited independent road test; range is Mercedes-Benz USA’s estimate, not a real-world test result. |
| CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology | All-electric, all-wheel drive | 349 hp; EPA range up to 312 miles | Not driven by the cited reviewer. Range is Mercedes-Benz USA’s estimate. |
| CLA hybrid | 48-volt hybrid system with a 1.5-liter turbo engine, integrated electric motor and eight-speed dual-clutch transmission | Output varies by market; the cited U.S. announcement does not give a comparable U.S. output figure. | Not driven by the cited reviewer. Mercedes says it can drive electrically in city conditions when less than 27 hp is needed and recuperate up to 25 kW in all eight gears. |
Mercedes-Benz USA’s December 15, 2025 hybrid announcement describes the 48-volt system and its operating characteristics. The electric figures are from the company’s U.S. materials; they should not be treated as independent performance or range measurements. See the hybrid announcement and U.S. electric CLA overview.

How to choose between electric and hybrid
- Choose based on energy access: An electric CLA depends on charging access and compatibility; a hybrid uses gasoline and offers limited electric driving at low power demand.
- Compare the exact local car: Hybrid availability, output, body styles and equipment can differ by market and model year.
- Do not assume a shared driving character: The available road-test evidence covers the electric RWD CLA 250+ only.
Technology is extensive, but it is not the whole experience
Mercedes says the CLA runs on MB.OS, its operating system for functions and connected services, including infotainment, driver assistance, body and comfort, and driving and charging. The system also enables over-the-air updates. Fourth-generation MBUX is the user-facing infotainment experience; Mercedes says it integrates AI from Microsoft and Google. An MBUX Superscreen, which adds a passenger display, is optional rather than standard on every CLA. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent assessments of each feature. Mercedes-Benz USA’s CLA overview.
Joire said the interface seemed more responsive and intuitive than older Mercedes EV software. That observation is narrower than a full evaluation of MB.OS or the car’s connected features, and it sits alongside her criticism of the window controls. The practical test for a buyer is whether the specific car’s screen layout and physical controls make sense during a visit or test drive.

U.S. prices and charging details to verify
Mercedes-Benz USA published starting MSRPs of $47,250 for the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and $49,800 for the CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology in 2025. These are manufacturer-published U.S. starting prices, not a guarantee of a current dealer offer; check a current local listing for the car’s price and equipment. Mercedes advertises an 800-volt architecture and DC charging up to 320 kW. Those headline figures do not by themselves settle whether a particular car can use a particular charging network. Joire reported that the early North American cars she encountered lacked 400-volt DC charging and Tesla Supercharger access, and that a converter-equipped revision was expected in spring 2026. That was a batch-specific, forward-looking statement at the time of her January 2026 report—not confirmation of the hardware in every CLA available now. Before buying, verify the exact vehicle’s charging equipment and network compatibility with the seller and the relevant network.

What the award does—and does not—tell you
The CLA won European Car of the Year 2026. Mercedes-Benz Group reported that 59 journalists from 23 countries awarded it 320 points, 100 more than the runner-up. That is a notable jury result, not a measure of reliability or proof that the car suits every driver. Mercedes-Benz Group’s award announcement.
