If your vehicle is designed for regular gasoline, premium generally does not improve fuel economy or performance enough to make it worthwhile. If premium is recommended but not required, it may help in some conditions, but the benefit varies by vehicle and must exceed the local price increase to lower your fuel cost per mile. If premium is required, use the grade specified for your exact vehicle.
Start with your vehicle’s fuel requirement
“Premium” describes gasoline with a higher octane rating, not a universal upgrade in fuel economy. The useful question is not whether premium is better in general; it is whether the manufacturer specifies or recommends it for your vehicle’s particular model year, engine, and configuration.

Check the owner’s manual or the label inside the fuel door. Follow the grade stated there, and distinguish carefully between “required” and “recommended.” A recommendation is not the same instruction as a requirement: some vehicles allow regular even though the manufacturer advises premium. If the wording is unclear, consult the manual for your exact engine rather than relying on a generic model name or advice for a different trim.

| What the manufacturer says | What to do | What the economy evidence suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Regular is specified or recommended | Use the grade specified for the vehicle. | AAA’s 2016 tests found no significant fuel-economy, horsepower, or emissions improvement from premium in vehicles designed for regular. |
| Premium is recommended but not required | Regular may be permitted; check the manual. Treat premium as an option to evaluate, not an automatic saving. | AAA’s 2017 test found a modest average economy gain, with substantial variation among vehicles and test conditions. |
| Premium is required | Use premium as specified; it is not a discretionary cost-saving comparison. | The relevant decision is following the vehicle requirement, not whether a different grade might cost less. |
The U.S. Department of Energy’s guidance draws the same practical distinction: regular-engineered vehicles are unlikely to gain much, premium-recommended vehicles may gain some performance or economy, and vehicles requiring premium should use it.

What the fuel-economy tests found
Vehicles designed for regular
AAA’s 2016 study tested vehicles designed to run on regular gasoline. It found no significant difference in horsepower, fuel economy, or emissions when those vehicles were tested with premium. That result addresses regular-designed vehicles; it should not be treated as a result for cars whose manufacturers recommend premium.
For a regular-designed vehicle, paying extra for premium is therefore not supported as a way to improve mileage. A different octane number does not itself promise more miles per gallon. The engine needs to be designed or calibrated to benefit from the higher knock resistance.
Vehicles that recommend, but do not require, premium
AAA’s 2017 Phase II study examined vehicles for which premium was recommended but not required. Across the test vehicles, average fuel economy improved by 2.7% with premium. Individual vehicle results ranged from a 1.0% decrease to a 7.1% increase. Those are study results for its tested sample and conditions, not a forecast for every car or driver.
The tests emphasized demanding use, including simulated towing, hauling, and aggressive acceleration. AAA cautioned that the results were not directly comparable with EPA mileage estimates and that drivers were unlikely to see a benefit in typical city or highway driving. The wide range matters: one vehicle’s result cannot be assumed for another, even when both manuals recommend premium.

In AAA’s December 12, 2017 release, its director of Automotive Engineering, Greg Brannon, said: “There’s no question that higher-octane premium fuel has the potential to boost a vehicle’s fuel economy and performance, however, engines have to be calibrated to require that fuel to see the full benefit.” The statement describes potential and calibration; it is not a promise that premium will improve a particular driver’s mileage.
Calculate whether the price is worth it
Compare the actual premium and regular prices where you buy fuel, then compare fuel economy under reasonably similar use. Premium lowers fuel cost per mile only when its percentage price increase is smaller than its percentage improvement in miles per gallon.
For a quick proportional comparison, let p be the percentage by which premium costs more per gallon than regular, and let g be the percentage increase in MPG on premium. Premium reduces fuel cost per mile only if g is greater than p. For an exact comparison, divide each grade’s price per gallon by the MPG achieved on that grade:

Choose premium for economy only if the second figure is lower—and do not use this calculation to override a premium requirement.
Example: a 20% higher price and a 3% MPG gain
If premium costs 20% more per gallon and improves measured fuel economy by 3%, the gain does not break even. The percentage increase in price is much larger than the percentage increase in distance driven per gallon, so premium costs more per mile.
AAA’s 2017 analysis used an approximate 20%–25% price difference, or about $0.50 more per gallon, alongside its test results. AAA concluded that the measured economy gains did not offset that added cost. These figures describe a dated national comparison from 2017—not today’s pump prices. Use current local prices and the economy you actually observe in your own vehicle.

If your manual says premium is recommended but not required and permits regular, you can make a cautious personal comparison. - Confirm the manual allows both grades. Check the entry for your exact model year, engine, and configuration. Do not run this comparison if premium is required.
- Record local prices. Note the regular and premium prices per gallon at the same station, or use prices representative of where you normally fill up.
- Track distance and fuel. For each fill, record the odometer distance and gallons needed to refill. Calculate MPG as miles driven divided by gallons used.
- Compare multiple tanks where practical. A single tank can be distorted by fill level, route, traffic, weather, or driving style. Compare several tanks on each grade while keeping your routine as similar as reasonably possible.
- Compare cost per mile. Divide each grade’s price per gallon by the MPG recorded for that grade. Premium is an economy saving only if its result is lower.
Temperature, traffic, driving style, vehicle load, and route can all change fuel economy. If those conditions differ between the regular and premium periods, the comparison cannot reliably attribute the change to octane. A short informal log is useful as a household cost check, but it is not equivalent to laboratory testing.

Octane measures gasoline’s resistance to engine knock. Higher-octane fuel is useful when an engine’s design or calibration calls for that resistance; it is not a general quality score or a promise of better mileage in every engine.
In most U.S. locations, regular is commonly labeled 87 octane, while premium is commonly 91, 92, or 93. Grade numbers can differ in high-altitude markets. Read the local pump label and use the grade specified in the owner’s manual rather than assuming that a particular number or label applies everywhere.

The manufacturer’s wording is decisive. “Required” means the maker specifies that grade for the vehicle; “recommended” means the maker advises it but distinguishes it from a requirement. Check the actual manual entry because fuel guidance can vary by model year, engine, and configuration.

How common is a premium recommendation?
Premium specifications are not limited to a handful of unusual cars, but fleet-level counts cannot tell you what your own vehicle needs. The U.S. Department of Energy reported that, for model year 2023, 26.7% of vehicle models required premium and 26.3% recommended it without requiring it. DOE’s figures are based on FuelEconomy.gov vehicle records or configurations; engine and transmission configurations may appear separately. They do not mean that those percentages of vehicles currently on U.S. roads require or recommend premium.
As historical context, DOE reported that the share of new vehicle models requiring premium rose from 16% in 2012 to 29% in 2018. That earlier trend is less current than the model-year 2023 breakdown, and neither statistic substitutes for checking the specification of a particular car.
Decision guide
- Your manual specifies regular: There is no demonstrated economy case for paying more for premium in a vehicle designed for regular, based on AAA’s 2016 test.
- Your manual recommends premium but permits regular: Premium may offer a modest benefit in some vehicles or demanding conditions, but do the local cost-per-mile comparison rather than assuming the MPG gain will cover the price increase.
- Your manual requires premium: Use the specified grade. The cost comparison is not a reason to substitute regular.
- You do not know the specification: Check the owner’s manual or fuel-door label before choosing a grade; do not infer the requirement from another vehicle’s result or from the word “premium.”
The central AAA tests date to 2016 and 2017, so their measured percentages and price comparison are evidence about the tested vehicles and conditions, not current price guidance or a guarantee for a newer model. A sound decision combines the current local price difference with the instruction for the exact vehicle and, only where regular is permitted, comparable fuel-economy observations.
