Does Mazda Know Whether Buyers Want an Electric Miata?

Mazda Australia’s managing director reports more requests for an analog next MX-5 than an electric one, but the comments are not a survey or a powertrain announcement.

Not conclusively. Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi was reported as saying that Australian showroom visitors rarely ask for an electric MX-5, while current MX-5 owners more often ask for a “pure analog” next generation. Those comments describe conversations he says he hears—not a representative survey or a confirmed decision about the next Miata’s powertrain.

What Mazda Australia’s managing director said

At the Australian launch of the electric CX-6e, Bhindi spoke with CarExpert, according to Motor1’s report republished on inkl. He said: “We don’t see that many customers coming into the showroom and saying, ‘An electric MX-5? That’d be for me.’” He added that MX-5 owners were asking, “When can I get the pure analog version of the next generation?”

The remarks are specifically about what Bhindi says he hears in Australian showrooms. The report gives no sample size, survey method, or representative demand data. They therefore do not establish that Miata buyers generally reject an electric car, or that Mazda has decided what propulsion the next MX-5 will use.

Is the next Mazda MX-5 confirmed to be electric?

No future-generation powertrain is confirmed by these remarks. The report discusses possibilities such as a larger naturally aspirated engine, Skyactiv-Z, hybridization, a weight target near 1,000 kg, and a successor that could still be years away. Those are not established Mazda commitments; portions of the report characterize them as speculation.

What the comments can—and cannot—tell buyers

  • They can: offer a reported glimpse of conversations Bhindi says he hears from Australian showroom visitors and existing owners.
  • They cannot: measure overall buyer preference, prove that demand for an electric MX-5 is low, or predict the next model’s powertrain.
  • They do not settle: whether a successor will be gasoline-powered, hybrid, electric, or offered in different forms across markets.
