No—not inherently. The 2026 U.S. GR Corolla’s eight-speed GR-DAT automatic changes what the driver does, rather than removing the car’s performance focus: it selects gears for you, while the six-speed iMT manual keeps clutch and gear selection in your hands. Which is more fun depends on whether you enjoy working the gearbox or would rather concentrate on steering, braking and throttle.
What changes between the GR Corolla automatic and manual?
For 2026 in the U.S., Toyota offers the GR Corolla with an eight-speed GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (GR-DAT) or a six-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT). Both pair with a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder rated at 300 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, according to Toyota USA’s 2025 announcement.
| Transmission | What the driver controls | What Toyota says it does |
|---|---|---|
| Six-speed iMT manual | Clutch operation and gear selection | Adjusts engine rpm on downshifts to help make gear changes smoother, per Toyota USA. |
| Eight-speed GR-DAT automatic | In D, the driver can focus on steering, braking and accelerator inputs; paddle/manual interaction is also available. | Senses brake and accelerator inputs to anticipate appropriate shifts, per Toyota USA. |
The manual makes gear changes a task—and a source of involvement—for the driver. The automatic takes that task over in D, which can free attention for other controls but may remove an interaction a manual fan specifically enjoys. Neither description proves that one transmission is more entertaining in every situation.
Why Toyota developed GR-DAT for performance driving
GR-DAT is not presented by Toyota as merely a convenience option. Toyota Japan says the system was developed with motorsport in mind, describing its aim in an English translation of its product page as: “GR-DAT was developed not simply to make driving easier, but with the aim of winning in motorsports.” That is Toyota’s design intent, not an independent verdict or driver testimony. Toyota Japan also says the Japanese-market GR-DAT shares gearing with the manual through sixth, then adds seventh and eighth for a wider operating range on ordinary roads; see Toyota Japan’s GR Corolla performance page.

For U.S. 2026 models, Toyota lists Normal, Gravel and Track drive modes with the GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system. In Track mode, Toyota says front-to-rear torque distribution can vary from a front-focused 60:40 to a rear-focused 30:70 according to driver input and vehicle status. Those chassis and AWD features are part of the car’s character regardless of transmission, so the gearbox is not the whole fun-factor equation.
Which transmission may suit your kind of fun?
Choose the manual if operating the gearbox is part of the appeal
- You want to coordinate clutch, throttle and gear selection yourself.
- You enjoy choosing when to shift, including downshifts, even with iMT’s rpm assistance.
- You value the extra task and connection of a manual more than the convenience of letting the car shift.
Consider the automatic if you want less shifting workload
- You would rather focus on steering, braking and throttle than operate a clutch and select gears.
- You regularly deal with traffic or expect multiple drivers with different transmission preferences. This is a practical consideration, not a measured GR Corolla test result.
- You want an automatic that Toyota says is designed for sporty driving and responds to brake and accelerator inputs.
For a manual-versus-automatic choice, preferences matter more than a universal ranking. An owner discussion on Reddit captures the question—whether the automatic is “still fun as the manual”—but that thread is anecdotal and cannot establish how owners generally feel. A separate Tom’s Guide account of a week with a 2026 manual is not an automatic-versus-manual comparison.

What Japanese-market figures do—and do not—tell you
Toyota GAZOO Racing’s 2025 Japanese-market specifications list GR-DAT at 1,500 kg and 6MT at 1,480 kg, and WLTC fuel economy at 10.8 km/L and 12.4 km/L respectively. These figures apply to the Japanese-market cars and test cycle; they are not U.S. EPA ratings. They describe measurable differences, not how enjoyable either transmission feels. See Toyota GAZOO Racing’s specifications.
Automatic-specific track equipment and use
Toyota says U.S. GR-DAT models include launch control intended for track driving, not public roads or repeated short-interval use. Toyota also lists an automatic-transmission-fluid cooler as standard on DAT models. These features support the automatic’s performance remit, but launch control is not a reason to use it on public streets.

Is there a clear fun-factor winner?
No published statistic or controlled head-to-head enjoyment test in the cited sources establishes one. The evidence supports a more useful distinction: the iMT keeps clutch and gear selection in the driver’s hands, while GR-DAT automates shifts and is designed by Toyota to respond to driving inputs. If shifting is the fun, the manual is the natural fit; if reducing gearbox workload is the fun, the automatic need not dilute the experience.
