The Dodge Viper is out of production: Dodge identifies 2017 as its final year. Across five generations, its defining feature was an unusually large naturally aspirated V10, while its limited-production character and track-focused ACR versions helped make it a singular American performance car. The car’s end date is clear; the sources available do not establish one definitive official reason it was discontinued.
What made the Viper different
The Viper’s identity centered on its V10 engine and a performance-car character that stood apart from more ordinary model lines. Its engine grew from an 8.0-liter unit in the first-generation cars to an 8.4-liter V10 in the final 2017 model year. That opening-to-closing comparison captures the scale of the change, but it is not a complete specification history for every generation.
The first generation was produced from 1992 to 1995, according to a 2020 SEC-hosted filing. The filing describes an 8.0-liter V10 developed with Lamborghini’s help, rated at 400 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. The same filing summarizes the Viper’s run as 25 years and five generations, ending in 2017. These production years differ from Dodge’s broader 1991–2017 span for Viper and Viper SRT, which reflects a broader model history rather than the first generation’s production dates.
Five generations, one defining engine
The Viper’s history is commonly described as five generations. The sources cited here establish the first generation’s production span and provide final-year specifications, but they do not support a reliable, complete generation-by-generation specification chart. What can be said with confidence is that the V10 remained central to the car’s identity while its displacement and output changed over the model’s life.

From first-generation V10 to final-year power
Dodge announced that every 2017 Viper used an all-aluminum 8.4-liter V10 rated at 645 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Those figures are Dodge’s specifications for the 2017 model year, not a claim about every Viper.
The ACR’s track emphasis
Dodge positioned the ACR as the track-oriented version. In its 2016 announcement about the returning 2017 ACR, the company said the Viper had 13 road-course lap records certified by the Sports Car Club of America. That is a manufacturer claim made at the time, not a current ranking of lap records.

Dodge’s announcement named the editions but does not establish a complete production total for the model or for each edition.

Why did Dodge discontinue the Viper?
Dodge confirms that the Viper ended in 2017, but its current Viper page does not give a definitive reason. A contemporaneous 2016 Cars.com report discussed weak sales and small monthly volumes, while noting that Dodge was not commenting on the reason. That makes sales a reported part of the context, not an official explanation. The available evidence does not settle whether one factor—sales, cost, regulation, or another pressure—caused the decision.

Buying a used Viper
Availability and condition depend on individual listings; no current market prices or live inventory are established here. Before buying, review the car’s documentation and condition, and confirm that any parts or service information applies to its specific model year and configuration. Dodge’s pre-owned guidance is a starting point, not a guarantee that a dealer has a Viper in stock.
Parts, service, and manuals
Dodge recommends authentic Mopar parts and dealer service. Its 2017 Viper User’s Guide covers that model year’s owner and safety information, but it is not a substitute for a generation-specific service manual or a professional inspection. Verify fitment before ordering any part; Viper specifications and configurations vary by year.
