The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a limited-production, drag-focused version of the Challenger, while the 2018 standard SRT Hellcat is the less specialized model in the comparison. Dodge rated the Demon at 840 hp and 770 lb-ft, versus 707 hp for the standard Hellcat. They share engine architecture, but Dodge says the Demon’s V8 is not simply a Hellcat engine with more boost.
How the 2018 Demon and standard Hellcat compare
“Hellcat” can refer to more than one Challenger trim, and “Demon” can mean either the 2018 SRT Demon or the later 2023 SRT Demon 170. The table below compares the classic pairing: the 2018 Demon and the 2018 standard SRT Hellcat.

Is a Demon faster than a Hellcat?
The Demon’s higher horsepower rating and drag-focused purpose point to a stronger straight-line performance orientation than the 2018 standard Hellcat. The figures above establish the power difference, but they are not themselves a controlled, same-condition acceleration comparison. No independent test results are established here, so a specific head-to-head elapsed time should not be inferred.
Is the Demon just a Hellcat with more boost?
No. Dodge’s official 2018 Demon overview says the Demon V8 shares its architecture with the 707-hp Hellcat V8, but “it is not simply a Hellcat engine with more boost.” That distinction matters: the cars are related, but the Demon is a distinct factory model rather than a boost-only upgrade to the Hellcat.

Which Hellcat are you comparing?
Horsepower depends on model year and trim. Dodge’s 2023 Challenger performance page lists three higher-output Hellcat-family figures that should not be conflated with the 2018 standard Hellcat:
- 2018 standard SRT Hellcat: 707 hp, per Dodge’s 2018 brochure.
- 2023 SRT Hellcat Redeye: 797 hp, per Dodge’s 2023 performance page.
- 2023 SRT Super Stock and SRT Jailbreak: 807 hp, per Dodge’s 2023 performance page.
Those later trim figures explain why “the Hellcat has X horsepower” is incomplete unless the trim and year are named.

What is different about the 2023 Demon 170?
The Demon 170 is a separate, later special edition—not another name for the 2018 Demon. Dodge’s 2023 announcement gives it ratings of 1,025 hp and 945 lb-ft on its specified high-ethanol fuel setup, and 900 hp and 810 lb-ft on E10. Those figures belong to the Demon 170 under the stated fuel conditions; they are not ratings for the original Demon or for a Hellcat.
Dodge also cited a 1.66-second 0–60 mph time and 2.004 g acceleration figure for the Demon 170. These are manufacturer claims for that specific model, not independent test results. The announcement describes the Demon 170’s equipment, including drag radials, TransBrake 2.0, drag-mode suspension, a modified supercharger and a strengthened driveline. Those details should not automatically be attributed to the 2018 Demon.

Dodge called the Demon 170 its seventh and final “Last Call” model and said the Challenger and Charger were ending their current HEMI-powered forms at the end of 2023. That historical announcement does not establish current availability or used-market prices.

For a comparison centered on the classic models, the 2018 Demon is the more specialized drag-oriented choice, with a higher Dodge-listed output than the 2018 standard Hellcat. The standard Hellcat is the relevant baseline if you mean the original 707-hp trim. If you mean a Redeye, Super Stock or Jailbreak—or the later Demon 170—name that exact version before comparing specifications, because the power and equipment differ.
