The Dodge Charger has eight commonly recognized generations: 1966–1967, 1968–1970, 1971–1974, 1975–1978, 1983–1987, 2006–2010, 2011–2023, and the 2025-model-year generation onward. Across those eras, the name has been used for coupes, a compact hatchback, full-size sedans, and the latest two- and four-door models.
Dodge Charger generations by model year
These are broad, commonly cited model-year ranges, not a complete production-date chart. Model years and launch or production dates do not always line up exactly, so a calendar-year changeover may not match the generation boundary.
| Generation | Model years | Body style and era |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1966–1967 | Original fastback coupe era |
| Second | 1968–1970 | Late-1960s muscle-car coupe era |
| Third | 1971–1974 | Redesigned early-1970s coupe era |
| Fourth | 1975–1978 | Personal-luxury coupe era |
| Fifth | 1983–1987 | Front-wheel-drive compact hatchback era |
| Sixth | 2006–2010 | Rear-wheel-drive full-size sedan revival |
| Seventh | 2011–2023 | Updated full-size sedan era |
| Eighth | 2025 model year onward | Multi-energy generation, with electric Daytona and gasoline SIXPACK configurations |
Dodge dates the Charger’s debut to New Year’s Day 1966 and identifies the current vehicle as the eighth generation. The ranges for the first seven generations are broad historical labels; they should not be treated as a precise year-by-year record of production or every trim and powertrain.
How the Charger changed from one generation to the next
First generation: 1966–1967
The first Charger established the name as a fastback coupe. It was the start of a model history that would later take the Charger far beyond that original body style.

Second generation: 1968–1970
This is the Charger’s best-known late-1960s muscle-car period. Its familiar place in the nameplate’s history can make the entire Charger story seem like one long muscle-coupe run, but later generations took different directions.
Third generation: 1971–1974
The Charger was redesigned for the early 1970s and remained a coupe. It was a distinct era from the preceding late-1960s generation, even though both were two-door cars.

The Charger shifted toward the personal-luxury coupe role. Mopar’s historical overview describes the nameplate’s changing roles and body styles, including this coupe era.
Fifth generation: 1983–1987
The Charger returned as a front-wheel-drive compact hatchback, a major departure from the earlier coupes. This run ended in 1987.

Sixth generation: 2006–2010
Dodge brought the Charger back for model year 2006 as a rear-wheel-drive full-size sedan. This was the nameplate’s return after a long absence, not a continuous next generation after the 1980s hatchback.
Seventh generation: 2011–2023
The sedan era continued with an updated generation. The broad model-history range ends after model year 2023.

Eighth generation: 2025 model year onward
The new generation moves beyond a single body style and powertrain direction. Dodge says that beginning in 2025 the Charger is offered with electric and gasoline models; current Stellantis brand material describes electric Daytona and gasoline SIXPACK variants. Dodge and Stellantis describe these as current offerings, so check the relevant model-year specifications for the configuration being considered.

The Charger returned as a full-size sedan for model year 2006, beginning the sixth generation. Mopar identifies 2006 as the reintroduction, and the broad history places that sedan run at 2006–2010. It followed the fifth-generation hatchback, which ended in 1987; Dodge did not sell a Charger in the intervening years.

What is current in the eighth generation?
As presented in current Dodge and Stellantis brand material, the 2026 lineup includes gasoline SIXPACK and electric Daytona versions. The figures below are manufacturer-published output claims, not independent test results.
| 2026 configuration | Manufacturer-published power | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Charger R/T SIXPACK | 420 horsepower | Dodge’s current anniversary page |
| Charger Scat Pack SIXPACK | 550 horsepower | Dodge’s current anniversary page |
| Charger Daytona Scat Pack, all-electric | 670 horsepower | Stellantis’ current Dodge brand page |
The 2024 announcement introduced the multi-energy generation’s direction: an electric Daytona and planned Hurricane-powered SIXPACK gasoline models. The lineup and output figures above are tied to the stated model year and current brand listings; they should not be read as specifications for every eighth-generation Charger or earlier model.
How to identify your Charger generation—and check parts fit
Start with the vehicle’s model year and match it to the table above. Because Charger generations changed body style, platform era, trim names, engines, and configuration, the generation alone may not establish which part fits.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the exact model year, trim, and configuration before ordering replacement parts or accessories.
- Use Mopar’s year-organized parts and accessories catalog to narrow a lookup by year, then verify the fitment details and part number for the vehicle.
- For a car close to a generation boundary, rely on its model year and vehicle-specific records rather than assuming the calendar year it was built determines its generation.
