The clearest difference is the engine: the Challenger R/T uses a 5.7-liter HEMI V8, while the SRT Hellcat uses a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8. The Hellcat is the higher-output performance model, but its horsepower depends on the model year and specific version. Compare the same year and derivative rather than treating every Hellcat figure as interchangeable.
Engine and power: 5.7-liter versus supercharged 6.2-liter
Dodge’s 2018 Challenger brochure lists the R/T with a 5.7L HEMI V8 and the SRT Hellcat with a supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8. The 2018 brochure also lists 375 hp for the R/T, but that figure is configuration-dependent; it should not be applied to every R/T model year or transmission. Dodge’s 2018 Challenger buyer’s guide is historical context, not a specification sheet for every model year.
Hellcat output also varies by derivative. On its 2023 performance page, Dodge lists 797 hp for Hellcat Redeye models and 807 hp with 707 lb-ft for the high-output 6.2L HEMI described for Super Stock and Jailbreak versions. Those figures belong to those named versions, not to every car carrying the Hellcat name. Dodge’s 2023 Challenger performance specifications identify the model-year-specific figures.
Hellcat versions and equipment
“Hellcat” is not one uniform equipment package. For 2023, Dodge says Widebody was available on the SRT Hellcat and Hellcat Redeye. Widebody models have wider wheels and Pirelli tires, while brake equipment varies by trim and package. Check the specific car’s build and included equipment rather than assuming all Hellcats have the same wheels, tires, or brakes. Special editions can add another layer to the comparison. For example, Dodge describes the 2023 Black Ghost as based on the Hellcat Redeye Widebody Jailbreak and lists 807 hp. How to compare two Challenger listings
Use the following checks to avoid comparing a base R/T with a higher-output Hellcat variant as if the names alone tell the whole story:

- Verify the transmission and configuration. Check the actual vehicle’s transmission, body configuration, and included packages; these details affect what the listing is describing.
- Inspect equipment and condition. Confirm Widebody status, wheels, tires, brakes, and the vehicle’s condition from its listing and documentation.
- Compare local asking prices directly. The specifications cited here do not establish comparable market prices or ownership costs, so use listings for the same year and configuration rather than inferring a price difference from horsepower.
What the available figures do—and don’t—show
The horsepower and torque figures above are Dodge manufacturer specifications for named model years and variants, not independent comparative test results. They establish the engine and rated output distinction; they do not by themselves establish acceleration differences, fuel economy, insurance costs, maintenance costs, or reliability. Those require comparable evidence for the particular years and vehicles being considered.
