What BMW changed for 2025
BMW’s U.S. press announcement for the 2025 4 Series is about the Coupe and Convertible, not the Gran Coupe specifically, so the Gran Coupe details below come from the two reviews. The changes reported for the Gran Coupe are:
- Grille: reworked, with matte-chrome accents, according to Car and Driver’s 2025 Gran Coupe review. Edmunds also lists grille and taillight revisions in its 2025 Gran Coupe review.
- Lighting: slimmer headlamps, plus the revised taillights noted above.
- Rear end: a revised rear bumper with larger exhaust outlets.
- Trim and cabin: new exterior paint choices, updated wheels, and a less dense iDrive menu structure.
- Steering wheel: a two-spoke wheel on standard cars, and a three-spoke, flat-bottom wheel specific to M Sport.
- Powertrain: 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance is added to the 430i, and Car and Driver reports output remains 255 hp.

How to make the grille call for yourself
A photo flattens the front end, so a fair test needs a little more effort than scrolling through gallery shots.
- Look at the car in the exact paint color and wheel style you would buy. Dark and light finishes change how much the matte-chrome accents stand out.
- Judge the grille together with the slimmer headlamps. They are part of the same front face, and a grille that looks busy in photos may read differently once the lights and bumper are in view.
- Sit in the car in daylight and at dusk. Front-end detail is easier to judge when you can see how it sits against the road and the body.
- If the grille still bothers you after a sustained look, that reaction is useful information. Familiarity is a hypothesis, not a guarantee.
What the Gran Coupe is
The Gran Coupe is the five-door fastback in BMW’s 4 Series range. Edmunds describes it as a four-door variant with coupe-like driving character, and its hatchback opening helps carry larger items; the rear seats fold to expand the cargo area. Edmunds lists this as the starting price for the xDrive. It is a listed MSRP, not a transaction price, and it will not match what a dealer quotes once options and destination charges are added.
How it drives, according to the reviewers
Edmunds
Edmunds reports a 6.2-second 0–60 mph run for the base 430i in its own testing. That figure comes from a test car, not from the xDrive specification sheet. Edmunds describes the car as stable and secure in turns, comfortable and easy at low speeds, and well equipped for braking, while noting that brake response at low speed can feel grabby.

Car and Driver praises the powertrain choices, the athletic handling, and the contemporary infotainment. It is less convinced by the steering feel, the rear headroom for tall passengers, and a cabin it considers relatively conservative. Where Edmunds finds the handling secure, Car and Driver is more critical of how the steering communicates.
Practicality: the hatch against the rear seat
The Gran Coupe’s appeal and its compromises come from the same shape.
- Helps: the hatch opening and folding rear seats make it easier to load larger items than the coupe body suggests.
- Costs: rear-seat space is the weak point. Edmunds calls the rear seat cramped, and Car and Driver says rear headroom is a problem for tall riders.
- Trade-off: if you carry adults in the back regularly, test the rear seat yourself before deciding the hatch is enough.
Price context
Car and Driver shows a 2025 Gran Coupe MSRP range of $51,000 to $66,750. Edmunds lists $51,650 as the starting MSRP for the 430i xDrive. These numbers are not directly interchangeable, because trim, drivetrain, equipment, and destination assumptions differ between them. Both are U.S. figures from the sources’ own dates, and neither is a transaction price.

Verdict
The grille is a deliberate, visible update, and whether it grows on you is personal. The spec case for the 430i xDrive is straightforward: 255 hp from a mild-hybrid four-cylinder, all-wheel drive, a shiftable eight-speed automatic, and 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind a hatch. The compromises are the rear seat and steering feel, both of which the reviewers flag. If rear-seat space matters to you, or you dislike the way the steering communicates, the reviews give you reasons to look harder before buying. If the hatch and the powertrain are the priorities, the grille is the only question left, and that one is yours to settle in person.
