There is not enough matched model-level evidence here to say that today’s GM V8 SUVs get the same gas mileage as their 2009 counterparts. The available EPA figures cover different vehicle groupings and model years, while GM’s 2009 description of its Tahoe and Yukon XFE applies to a specific package—not every V8 SUV.
What the available EPA figures actually show
The EPA reported an adjusted composite fuel-economy figure of 19.1 mpg for GM trucks in model year 2009. That is a manufacturer-and-category aggregate, not a rating for a particular Tahoe, Yukon, or Escalade. The EPA’s 2010 trends report therefore cannot establish the fuel economy of all GM V8 SUVs in 2009, much less prove that current models match it.
A separate EPA historical report gives adjusted composite figures for two 2008 Tahoe configurations: 16.9 mpg for the C1500 2WD and 16.4 mpg for the K1500 4WD. Those are model-year 2008 entries, not 2009 figures, and they distinguish two-wheel drive from four-wheel drive. What GM said about the 2009 Tahoe and Yukon XFE
GM TechLink’s November 2009 article, “XFE Trucks Deliver on Fuel Economy”, describes a particular fuel-economy package. It says the Tahoe and Yukon XFE used a 5.3-liter FlexFuel V8 and a six-speed automatic transmission. GM attributed improvements to the XFE package and compared it with regular full-size trucks.

That description does not make XFE ratings representative of every Tahoe or Yukon V8, nor does it provide a matched comparison with a current model. Engine, transmission, drivetrain, package, and model year all matter when interpreting a vehicle’s fuel-economy figure.
Why “the same mileage” needs a like-for-like comparison
Fuel-economy numbers answer different questions depending on how they were produced. EPA window-sticker city, highway, and combined ratings are model-specific consumer figures. Adjusted composite figures in EPA trend reports are intended for historical comparisons and may represent broader groupings. Neither should be substituted for real-world owner mileage, which the available sources do not establish.

A sound 2009-versus-current comparison would need to match:
- the specific SUV and model years;
- engine displacement and fuel capability;
- two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive;
- standard trim versus a package such as XFE, or a hybrid configuration; and
- the same rating basis, with city, highway, and combined figures compared separately where available.
Without those matched details, the figures above provide context, not proof of equality.

What can be concluded
The EPA’s 19.1-mpg figure is for GM trucks as a category in 2009, and its listed Tahoe figures are for two different 2008 drivetrains. GM’s XFE description concerns a specific package. None of these sources verifies that today’s GM V8 SUVs get the same mileage as equivalent 2009 models.
