You can build DIY driving simulator pedals with anything from a simple potentiometer-based printed set to a modular design that combines Hall-effect sensors with a load-cell brake. Pick one documented design before buying parts: the fabrication method, controller, firmware, wiring, and bill of materials differ between projects and are not interchangeable by default.

How DIY simulator pedals sense pedal input

A potentiometer or Hall-effect sensor measures pedal position: as the pedal moves, the controller reads a changing signal. A load cell instead measures force on the brake mechanism, typically through an HX711 amplifier. Some projects mix these approaches, using a load cell for braking and position sensors for throttle and clutch.

Fanatec describes its own CSL Pedals Load Cell Kit as measuring pressure instead of pedal travel. That distinction is useful when comparing sensor types, but the manufacturer’s claim about a more realistic feel is not proof that every DIY load-cell build will feel or perform better.

Choose a build path before buying parts

Build path Sensors and electronics Fabrication What to consider
Basic printed pedals The DIY Sim Studio listing specifies an Arduino Pro Micro and one potentiometer per pedal. 3D-printed parts. A comparatively simple starting point; force-based braking is not specified for this design. The listing offers the plan for free, but that does not make the materials or printing cost-free.
Open modular pedals Hall sensors and/or load cells. The cited standalone software requires a 32u4-based Arduino board; load-cell input uses the HX711 library. Printed STL components or laser-cut metal parts, with STEP and DXF files. Flexible sensor and fabrication choices, but you must follow the project’s compatible electronics, assembly instructions, wiring, and calibration procedure.
3030 extrusion LC/Hall community build A 120 kg brake load cell and HX711, Hall sensors for throttle and clutch, and an Arduino Pro Micro. 3030 extrusion, skateboard bearings, springs, and other listed parts. A mixed-sensor option. The project page said documentation was pending, so review what is available before treating it as a beginner-ready build.
Steel CAD plan The vendor lists a triple-load-cell option and Pro Micro/HX711 firmware and wiring documentation. Stainless-steel laser cutting, with optional printed parts. The vendor provides a bill of materials and assembly videos, but the plans are paid; check the current listing and price before purchasing.

Compare plans by sensor type, access to a 3D printer or cutting service, adjustability, controller and firmware compatibility, instruction quality, and availability of the specified parts. There is no controlled independent comparison here establishing relative accuracy, durability, or pedal feel.

What parts does a DIY pedal build need?

Use the bill of materials for your selected design rather than merging shopping lists. For example, the CNCDan SimPedals project lists:

  • Six 625 bearings
  • Two 6×2 magnets and two Hall-effect sensors
  • One NA151 200 kg load cell and one HX711 amplifier
  • Three M6 female rod ends and three retaining collars
  • 2020 extrusion, corner brackets, and M5/M6 hardware

That is the parts list for this particular project, not a universal requirement for sim pedals. It provides STL files for printed parts, STEP/DXF files for metal parts, and a folding-instruction PDF. See the CNCDan SimPedals repository.

The separate SteelForce Apex plan lists spring and elastomer options, a 120 kg brake load-cell option with a 100 kg alternative, and 20 kg load-cell options for throttle and clutch. Those figures describe options in that plan, not ratings to substitute into another build. Check dimensions and compatibility against the exact plan before ordering. The SteelForce Apex CAD-plan listing also includes firmware and wiring documentation.

Match the controller, wiring, and firmware

Do not assume that similar-looking sensors or boards share pinouts or code. A Hall sensor and magnet form a position-sensing arrangement; a load cell is a strain-gauge sensor that requires an amplifier such as an HX711 in the cited designs. Follow the wiring diagram and firmware for the specific project you choose.

The CNCDan standalone code README says it works only with 32u4-based Arduino boards, naming the Pro Mini and Leonardo as examples, and requires the HX711 library in the Arduino IDE. The board requirement belongs to that project’s standalone code; it should not be read as a universal rule for every DIY pedal design. Read the repository instructions alongside the selected design’s parts and wiring documents.

Calibrate the pedals and account for project limits

The CNCDan README documents calibration through the serial monitor at 115200 baud. Its instructions say to enter “Y” to start, then move all pedals through both ends of their travel for one minute. It also advises recalibrating after moving a sensor or making a change that affects calibration.

SIMSONN PRO X Ultra Sim Racing Pedals PC Racing Simulator Load Cell HE Hydraulic Pedals Support Haptic Reactor (PRO X Ultra P3-H3)
  • Model: Pro X Ultra P3-H3, include Brake + Throttle + Clutch, no baseplate
  • [New Upgraded Custom Damping System] The brake pedal comes standard with an adjustable hydraulic resistance rod with 1-8 levels of adjustment. New materials and better elasticity provide smoother and more accurate feedback for the pedal. 60HA/70HA/80HA elastomers with 10 spacers allowing for various brake pedal feel combinations to suit different vehicle types.
  • [High-Precision Sensor Technology] Equipped with advanced load cell components, the PRO X Ultra pedals provide true linear input measurement for throttle, clutch, and braking force, ensuring precise responses for a more immersive experience.
  • [Powerful Processing Unit] The controller integrates a total of 6 chips: two independent 32-bit processors, one dedicated 16-bit high-resolution ADC for synchronous signal acquisition, and three fully differential signal amplification chips for noise immunity. This ensures stable, low-latency, and high-precision signal processing for the entire pedal system. The system supports three-channel simultaneous data sampling for the throttle, brake, and clutch, ensuring faster response times and seamless operation. It effectively resists interference from other bases or 4-axis motion seats, greatly enhancing signal stability and accuracy.
  • Windows fully supports 16-bit HID game controller axes. In HID descriptors, game controllers typically define their axis values with 16-bit resolution (e.g., ranges from 0 to 65,535 or from –32,768 to 32,767) to achieve highly precise analog input, ensuring smooth and accurate control in games.

The project maintainer explicitly says the calibration code is untested by them, so treat that procedure as project documentation rather than independently verified operation. Confirm the response in your own controller or simulator software after assembly, and consult the project’s instructions if the input range is incorrect.

What should you budget for?

There is no reliable all-in build price that applies across regions, tools, materials, and fabrication access. Even a free plan can involve costs for filament, metal cutting, hardware, shipping, or tools; a laser-cut design also depends on access to a suitable service. The DIY Sim Studio site lists both a free printed-pedal plan and the paid SteelForce Apex CAD plan. Check each listing for current availability and price rather than relying on a general cost claim.
