Ditch the Dealership: How Tred’s $25 Million Bet Became Autotrader Private Seller Exchange

Tred raised $25 million in 2021 to build a supported peer-to-peer car marketplace. Here is how its model worked, why investors backed it, and how Tred became Autotrader Private Seller Exchange.

Tred raised $25 million in Series B financing on November 9, 2021, betting that car shoppers would buy from private owners online if the marketplace supplied the verification, financing, paperwork, title, payment, and delivery support normally associated with a dealership.

The company’s story has a current epilogue: Tred later joined the Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book family and became Private Seller Exchange (PSX). The startup brand is gone, but its core idea—private-party inventory with managed transaction infrastructure—continues under the successor platform.

The short version

Tred raised $25 million in Series B financing on November 9, 2021, bringing its reported total funding to $37 million. The Seattle startup was trying to make private-party car buying feel more like a supported online retail transaction—without becoming a traditional dealership with a large inventory of its own.

Its marketplace connected buyers with private sellers and added services intended to reduce the biggest risks of buying directly from an owner: identity verification, vehicle-history information, test-drive coordination, financing, paperwork, title and registration help, payment support, protection products, and pickup or delivery.

Tred is no longer presented as an independent consumer brand. According to Autotrader’s current FAQ, Tred joined the Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book family and became Private Seller Exchange (PSX). That makes the 2021 funding round both a startup-growth story and an early example of the infrastructure now being used to support private-party vehicle transactions online.

Why Tred wanted to replace the dealership visit

Buying a used car from a dealership offers convenience, financing, paperwork assistance, and a familiar place to complete the transaction. It can also involve price markups, sales pressure, limited negotiation flexibility, and a process that requires several hours at a physical store.

A private-party sale can offer a different trade-off. The buyer may negotiate directly with the owner and potentially avoid some dealership-related costs. But the buyer also has to deal with questions that a dealer normally helps manage—or should help manage—including:

  • Is the seller who they claim to be?
  • Does the seller actually own the vehicle?
  • Is there an outstanding loan or lien?
  • Is the title clean and transferable?
  • Has the vehicle sustained damage that is not obvious from the listing?
  • How should the buyer pay without exposing either party to fraud?
  • Who handles the bill of sale, temporary permit, registration, and title transfer?

Tred’s proposition was not simply to publish classified listings. It was to build the trust and transaction layer that private-party sales usually lack, allowing the buyer and seller to remain the counterparties while Tred supported the process around them.

Tred’s $25 million Series B

Tred announced the Series B on November 9, 2021. Contemporary reports from GeekWire and Auto Remarketing said the round brought the company’s total funding to approximately $37 million.

The reported participants included:

  • Vivek Raj, associated in coverage with Geneses Investments or Geneses Capital Management;
  • Ian Anderson, associated with Westlake Financial or Nowlake Technologies; and
  • Mike Kraus of CMFG Ventures.

The varying names reflect how different outlets described the relevant investor entities. The round participation is supported by multiple contemporary reports, but the funding should be described as a company-announced private financing rather than independently audited financial data. No public SEC offering record or primary investor announcement was identified in the available research.

Tred said it planned to use the capital for product expansion, geographic expansion, partnerships, and engineering hiring. The company reportedly had about 30 employees at the time, so the round represented a substantial attempt to scale both its technology and its operating footprint.

How the marketplace worked

Tred was founded in Seattle in 2012. It initially operated as a direct-to-consumer service that worked with dealerships to bring vehicles to customers for test drives and possible purchases. Beginning in 2015, it moved toward a peer-to-peer marketplace.

That shift changed the inventory model. Instead of buying and holding a conventional dealer inventory, Tred allowed privately owned vehicles to remain with their owners until a buyer committed to the purchase and payment was collected. In principle, that reduced the capital required to stock vehicles and gave sellers more control over their cars while they were listed.

The customer journey was designed to happen largely online:

  1. A seller listed a privately owned vehicle.
  2. A prospective buyer communicated with the seller through the marketplace.
  3. The parties arranged a test drive.
  4. The buyer could pursue financing or make other payment arrangements.
  5. Tred supported the purchase documents, title-related work, and registration process.
  6. The completed vehicle was picked up or delivered, depending on the transaction.

Reported Tred services also included seller and buyer verification, fraud protection, vehicle-value information, vehicle-history reporting, temporary permits, vehicle protection products, and assistance with lien and title processes. The exact services and fees could vary by location and date.

Contemporary coverage described Tred’s listing and sales fees as starting at roughly $100. That figure should not be treated as a current or nationwide fee schedule; the available reporting did not independently verify the precise pricing for every market.

The difficult part was not the listing—it was the transaction

Online car marketplaces often look simple from a customer’s perspective: search, message, inspect, and buy. Behind the scenes, however, a private-party vehicle transaction involves multiple parties, state-specific rules, financial institutions, documents, fraud controls, and logistics.

Tred’s leadership indicated that much of 2016 and 2017 was spent automating these processes. That detail is important because it shows where the company believed its defensibility lay. The advantage was not necessarily a larger list of cars; it was the ability to make a complicated transaction repeatable enough to support at scale.

It also had to solve the classic two-sided-market problem. Buyers are less likely to visit a marketplace with few attractive vehicles, while sellers are less likely to list vehicles where buyer demand is weak. Expansion therefore required building supply and demand at the same time, while maintaining enough local operational support for inspections, test drives, title work, payments, and delivery.

Where Tred was expanding in 2021

At the time of the Series B, reports described Tred as operating across a multi-market U.S. footprint that included the Pacific Northwest, California, Texas, Florida, and selected additional metropolitan areas.

Markets reported in contemporary coverage included:

  • Miami, Tampa Bay, Orlando, and Jacksonville;
  • Chicago;
  • Denver;
  • Phoenix;
  • Salt Lake City;
  • Indianapolis; and
  • Las Vegas.

The market lists and counts differed somewhat by outlet and appear to have changed as Tred expanded. They should be understood as a snapshot of the company’s reported 2021 footprint—not a current list of available Tred markets. Tred is not currently presented as an independent operating brand.

Why the timing looked attractive to investors

The financing arrived during the pandemic-era shift toward online purchasing and a period of severe disruption in vehicle supply. Tred’s management argued that consumers were becoming more comfortable completing major purchases digitally, while a shortage of used-car inventory increased competition for vehicles held by private owners.

That was the company’s strategic rationale, not proof that the model was guaranteed to work. Selling a car online is more difficult than selling many other products because customers usually want to see and drive the vehicle, lenders need reliable information about the collateral, states have different title and registration requirements, and a transaction can fail if a lien or ownership issue is discovered late.

The opportunity was therefore larger than removing a dealership salesperson from the process. Tred was attempting to separate the dealership’s useful functions—financing, documentation, payment handling, and transaction support—from the traditional dealer-inventory model.

Historical partnerships added financing and protection products

In 2017, Ally announced that it would offer auto-finance and insurance products for vehicles purchased through Tred. The announcement described financing applications, vehicle service contracts, GAP coverage, vehicle-history information, and a 150-point buyer inspection as parts of the experience at that time. The historical announcement is available through Ally’s newsroom.

That partnership helps explain how Tred tried to make a private-party sale resemble a supported retail transaction. It should not, however, be presented as proof that the Ally relationship remained active after Tred’s later integration into Autotrader Private Seller Exchange. Current offerings should be checked separately.

Tred versus Carvana and Vroom

Contemporary coverage compared Tred with online used-car companies including Carvana and Vroom, and also mentioned Carvago. The comparison is useful but needs an important qualification.

  • Water-resistant, machine-washable fabric which is easy for you to clean the muddy footprints, Good for Travel, Kids.

Carvana and Vroom primarily operated as online used-car retailers with company-controlled inventory. Tred’s defining model was different: it was a peer-to-peer marketplace in which private sellers supplied the vehicles and Tred provided transaction services.

Feature Tred’s marketplace model Online used-car retailer model
Inventory Vehicles supplied by private owners Inventory acquired and controlled by the retailer
Seller Usually the vehicle’s private owner The retail company
Primary promise Private-party pricing with transaction support Retail convenience with company-managed inventory
Operational challenge Coordinating two-sided marketplace activity and local transactions Acquiring, reconditioning, financing, and delivering inventory

Both models competed for the same online car-shopping attention, but they carried different economics, risks, and customer experiences. Tred did not need to own every listed vehicle, but it had to persuade both sellers and buyers to participate in the same local marketplace.

Current PSX fees and vehicle restrictions

As of 2026, the PSX FAQ says sellers pay a protection fee of 1% of the final vehicle sale price when selling through Private Seller Exchange. That is a current PSX statement, not Tred’s reported 2021 fee schedule.

PSX also says its marketplace does not support:

  • vehicles with branded, rebuilt, or salvaged titles;
  • leased vehicles;
  • ATVs;
  • motorcycles;
  • trailers; or
  • boats.

Autotrader directs certain older vehicles and recreational vehicles to other properties. Eligibility, fees, geographic availability, financing, and protection products can change, so a buyer or seller should confirm the current terms before starting a transaction.

What an online marketplace cannot replace

Transaction support can reduce some risks, but it does not make a used vehicle risk-free. A buyer still needs to evaluate the car itself and understand the legal terms of the purchase.

Before agreeing to buy

  1. Check the VIN and history. Review title status, reported accidents, odometer information, recalls, and service records where available. A history report is useful evidence, but it cannot reveal every mechanical problem or every past event.
  2. Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase. Washington’s Department of Licensing recommends checking vehicle history and recalls and obtaining an independent inspection when buying a used vehicle from a private party. A seller-provided inspection is not the same as an independent assessment.
  3. Confirm ownership and liens. Make sure the seller’s identity matches the ownership documents and ask how any outstanding lender lien will be paid and released.
  4. Test-drive the actual vehicle. Verify that the VIN on the vehicle matches the listing and paperwork. Test the brakes, steering, transmission, climate control, lights, driver-assistance features, and other equipment relevant to the car.
  5. Read the financing and protection documents. Compare the interest rate, term, total cost, service-contract coverage, exclusions, GAP terms, and cancellation provisions. Do not assume an optional product is required to buy the vehicle.
  6. Understand the final paperwork. Check the sale price, taxes, fees, title documents, odometer disclosure, temporary permit, registration responsibilities, and delivery or pickup terms.

Washington’s Department of Licensing provides state-specific guidance for buying and registering a vehicle. The Washington Attorney General also warns buyers to compare financing, inspect contracts and add-ons, and remember that vehicle purchases generally do not come with a three-day cancellation right. Requirements vary by state, so Washington guidance should not be treated as universal U.S. law.

A diagnostic scanner is only a supplement

An OBD2 scanner can help a buyer look for diagnostic trouble codes and monitor some vehicle data, but it is not a substitute for a mechanical inspection. Codes may be cleared before a sale, some faults do not trigger a code, and a scanner cannot assess many physical, structural, or safety issues. Treat any scan as one small input—not a certification that the car is sound.

What the funding round ultimately represents

Tred’s Series B was a bet that consumers would accept a private-party vehicle transaction if a marketplace supplied enough of the trust, financing, paperwork, and logistics normally associated with a dealership.

The later move into Autotrader Private Seller Exchange provides a more useful endpoint than treating Tred as a still-independent startup. The brand changed, but the central idea remained recognizable: combine private-owner inventory with identity checks, transaction support, title and payment infrastructure, and online shopping tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not prove that every original Tred feature, location, partnership, or fee survived unchanged. It does show why the company’s 2021 strategy mattered: the hard part of online car buying was never merely displaying a vehicle on a webpage. It was making a high-value, trust-sensitive private transaction workable from the first message through payment, title transfer, and delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money did Tred raise?

Tred raised $25 million in Series B financing on November 9, 2021. Contemporary reports said the round brought its total reported funding to approximately $37 million.

Is Tred still in business?

No. Autotrader says Tred joined the Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book family and became Private Seller Exchange, or PSX. Tred is not currently presented as an independent consumer brand.

How did Tred work?

Tred’s model connected private sellers and buyers while supporting verification, test drives, financing, vehicle-history information, paperwork, title and registration processes, payment, protection products, and delivery or pickup. The exact services varied by time and market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Private Seller Exchange charge?

The current PSX FAQ says sellers pay a protection fee equal to 1% of the final vehicle sale price. That is a current PSX fee and should not be confused with Tred’s reported 2021 fees, which were described as starting at approximately $100.

Should I get an inspection when buying through a private-party marketplace?

Yes. Buyers should independently verify the VIN and title, review available history and recall information, test-drive the actual vehicle, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Marketplace protections do not eliminate mechanical or legal risks.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Tred’s $25 million 2021 Series B funded an attempt to make private-party car buying as supported as a dealership transaction while avoiding dealer-controlled inventory. Tred later became Autotrader Private Seller Exchange, so readers researching the company today should look to PSX for current fees, eligibility, and features—and should still arrange their own vehicle history review and independent inspection.
