The Toyota RAV4 helped establish the compact crossover formula: a car-like, self-supporting body with four-wheel drive and light off-road ability. It also retains value better than many small and compact SUVs, according to iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking. That is not the same as saying used RAV4 prices are currently rising; the available figures measure value retention, not year-over-year price growth.
Did the RAV4 start the crossover movement?
The RAV4 did not invent every vehicle that blended passenger-car comfort with off-road styling or capability. It was, however, an early pioneer of the compact SUV and crossover format, and Toyota’s 1994 launch announcement made that blend the point: the RAV4 combined passenger-car elements with those of a light off-road vehicle.
Toyota announced the RAV4 for sale in Japan on May 10, 1994, with a stated monthly sales target of 2,000 units. That was a target, not a report of actual sales. The original model paired a monocoque body with independent suspension on all four wheels and full-time four-wheel drive. Toyota positioned it between sporty compact cars and traditional off-road vehicles.
How Toyota developed the original RAV4
The idea dates to the RAV-FOUR concept shown at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota Motor Europe’s account of the model’s history says the project received approval in 1991, and first-generation production ran from 1994 to 2000.

The first RAV4 was notably compact and initially came as a two- or three-door model. Toyota says a five-door version and optional front-wheel drive joined the range in 1996, broadening its appeal beyond buyers who wanted four-wheel drive.
Toyota Motor Europe reported that cumulative global RAV4 sales passed 14 million in 2023. That company-reported milestone helps explain the model’s lasting importance, though it does not by itself establish how any individual used RAV4 will perform in the market.

Is the Toyota RAV4 going up in value?
Not necessarily. The available figures support a narrower conclusion: the RAV4 holds its value comparatively well. iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking estimates that a RAV4 retains 74.6% of its value after five years, versus 58.8% for the small and compact SUV segment overall.
That is a relative retention measure, not evidence that used RAV4 prices have risen from one year to the next. A car can depreciate in absolute terms and still lose less value than its competitors. The ranking page lists a $25,179 average price for five-year-old RAV4 examples, but that modeled average is not a guaranteed price for a particular vehicle.

How the RAV4 compares with similar SUVs
In the same iSeeCars 2026 small and compact SUV ranking, the RAV4’s five-year retention estimate is close to the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda CR-V:

These are estimates from the ranking, not values guaranteed to owners. The small difference between the RAV4 and Corolla Cross does not show a dramatic advantage; the comparison is useful as a broad model-level reference, not as a substitute for checking specific vehicles in the same market and condition.

What a RAV4’s resale value depends on
A model-level retention estimate cannot tell you what a particular RAV4 is worth. For a meaningful comparison, match vehicles by market, model year or age, trim, powertrain, mileage, and condition. Also distinguish asking prices from completed-sale prices and modeled resale estimates: they describe different things.
iSeeCars says its depreciation and resale estimates draw on analysis of more than 15 million vehicles and calculate depreciation from the difference between new and used prices at specified vehicle ages, with automaker and segment also considered. Its five-year ranking is best read as a comparison at that age, not as a forecast for every RAV4 or a measure of recent price movement.

What the figures do—and do not—show
The 2026 ranking supports the view that the RAV4 retains a larger share of its value after five years than the small and compact SUV average. It does not establish that RAV4 prices are appreciating now. The cited ranking and model pages present estimates from their respective snapshots; they are not a matched year-over-year transaction or asking-price series.
So the defensible answer is that the RAV4 helped pioneer the compact crossover idea and appears to hold value well relative to its segment. To determine whether a particular RAV4 is rising in price, compare current local listings or transaction data with equivalent vehicles from an earlier period, holding age, trim, mileage, condition, and market as consistent as possible.
