Tesla delivered fewer vehicles and reported sharply lower profits in the first quarter, while also saying factory changeovers for the new Model Y cost it several weeks of production. That makes the spring 2025 “major bust” verdict more confident than the numbers alone support.
What the “Hail Mary” headline meant
The “Hail Mary” was Tesla’s refreshed Model Y, launched in January 2025. In a May 13, 2025 article, Futurism argued that early signs did not show the update reviving consumer interest as Tesla faced sales difficulties. “Major bust” was the article’s characterization of that early picture—not a measured finding that the refresh had failed.
The distinction matters: a new vehicle’s early impact cannot be judged from company-wide deliveries alone, especially when production was disrupted and the published figures do not isolate Model Y sales. The relevant question is what the first-quarter results establish, and what they leave unresolved.
What Tesla reported for Q1 2025
Tesla delivered 336,681 vehicles worldwide in Q1 2025, 13% fewer than a year earlier, according to its quarterly delivery release. The company cautioned that deliveries are only one measure of performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.

The financial results were also weaker year over year. Tesla’s Q1 2025 Form 10-Q and quarterly financial summary reported:

The percentages are year-over-year comparisons calculated from Tesla’s displayed figures. They establish that Tesla’s reported results deteriorated; they do not identify the refreshed Model Y as the cause.

How much did the Model Y changeover affect deliveries?
Tesla said the changeover of Model Y production lines at all four of its factories caused several weeks of lost production during Q1. The company also said the new Model Y ramp was going well. These are Tesla’s explanations, not independent assessments of the production impact or the ramp.
In its 10-Q, Tesla said automotive sales revenue fell by $3.54 billion year over year and cited, in part, approximately 51,000 fewer combined cash deliveries of the Model 3 and Model Y. It attributed part of that decline to factory downtime for the Model Y changeover. The filing does not give a figure for how many deliveries were lost specifically because of the refresh, nor does the combined Model 3-and-Model Y figure isolate Model Y demand.

That leaves two forces intertwined in the Q1 total: fewer vehicles produced during the transition and whatever change in buyer demand may have occurred. The public figures establish the production interruption, but they do not quantify its share of the delivery decline or separately measure demand for the refreshed model.
Why analysts questioned whether the refresh would be enough
Contemporaneous reporting raised several possible explanations for Tesla’s weakness: consumer backlash associated with Elon Musk, stronger competition, an aging lineup, and buyers waiting for the updated Model Y. These are reported context and interpretations; the available figures do not isolate the effect of any one factor.

Futurism relayed Reuters reporting that Tesla was offering zero-percent financing and quoted Paren chief analyst Loren McDonald questioning why incentives were appearing so soon after launch. He interpreted the offers as a strong sign of a demand problem, particularly given pressure on margins. That is an analyst’s reading of the promotion, not a Tesla disclosure or proof that the refreshed Model Y itself lacked demand. The cited reporting does not establish the offer’s full terms across markets.
Futurism also quoted Edmunds head of insights Jessica Caldwell saying buyers might not see the vehicle as sufficiently different and new. That was her market interpretation, not a published consumer survey result. Together, these comments explain why some observers doubted the refresh would be enough; they do not amount to a measured verdict on its sales performance.

Did the refreshed Model Y fail?
The strongest supportable conclusion from the spring 2025 evidence is narrower than the headline: Tesla’s first-quarter deliveries and financial results were down, and the new Model Y had not yet demonstrated a company-wide turnaround. But the quarter included a substantial production transition, and the reported totals do not isolate Model Y sales, buyer response, or the independent effect of incentives and other market pressures.
So “major bust” was an early opinion, not a result proven by Q1 data. A firmer assessment would require comparable Model Y sales and buyer-response evidence over a longer period. The Q1 figures alone cannot show whether the refresh failed to attract customers or whether its launch impact was obscured by production constraints and broader factors.
Why this is not a current sales snapshot
The claims above describe spring 2025, not Tesla’s status today. In its SEC-filed Q2 2026 update, Tesla reported 480,126 deliveries and 15 days of global vehicle inventory. Those later figures are a separate snapshot; they do not explain the 2025 results or prove that the Model Y refresh succeeded or failed.
