No. Tesla did not close all its stores. In February 2019, it announced plans to wind down many locations and shift to online-only sales, but revised that plan the following month, saying it would close about half as many stores as originally planned. What did Tesla announce, and what changed?
Tesla’s February 2019 announcement proposed closing many stores as part of a move to sell cars online. In a March update, the company said it had decided to keep significantly more locations open. It described the revision as closing about half as many stores as planned, with cost savings correspondingly reduced. Tesla’s March 2019 statement is the primary record of the revision.
That was a change to the store-closure plan, not a withdrawal of online ordering. Tesla said sales worldwide would still be completed online, and that visitors to stores would be shown how to place an order on a phone. The distinction matters: ordering online did not mean that every physical retail location would disappear.
Could customers still visit a Tesla store?
Under the revised 2019 plan, stores could assist visitors with ordering, and Tesla said test drives would remain available on request. The company also said stores would carry a small number of vehicles for immediate delivery. It planned to reopen a few high-visibility locations that had been closed, with smaller crews. These were details of the 2019 plan, not a guarantee about services at every store today.

Tesla describes its retail locations as company-owned stores rather than franchised dealerships. The company has historically favored direct sales; at a 2016 Federal Trade Commission workshop, a Tesla representative said the company believed it should educate buyers about its technology and brand, and argued that the franchise model did not fit its approach. That is Tesla’s stated rationale, not an independent finding about which sales model is best.
Why did Tesla reverse part of the closure plan?
Tesla initially said the wind-down was intended to reduce costs and pass savings to customers. After deciding to keep more stores open, it said in March 2019 that it would raise vehicle prices by about 3% on average worldwide, subject to exceptions in that historical announcement. That figure describes a 2019 pricing change only; it is not a current price increase or a guide to today’s prices.

Does Tesla still have physical retail locations?
Yes. Tesla’s fiscal-year 2025 Form 10-K says the company intends to continue sales strategies that include its website and discusses continued expansion of retail and service locations. It also warns that laws in some U.S. states may limit sales through company-owned stores. This supports the conclusion that physical locations remain part of Tesla’s retail footprint, but the filing is not a current store-by-store count and does not resolve the rules in every jurisdiction.
