No evidence shows Nissan replaced its CEO to revive a Honda merger. Nissan appointed Ivan Espinosa to succeed Makoto Uchida in April 2025, after Nissan and Honda had already ended their talks about business integration. The companies later pursued defined technical collaboration, but that is not the same as a merger.
When did Nissan replace its CEO?
Nissan announced on March 11, 2025, that Ivan Espinosa, then its chief planning officer, would become president and CEO, succeeding Makoto Uchida. The appointment took effect April 1, 2025. Nissan’s announcement describes the succession; the company’s leadership page, dated June 24, 2026, also listed Espinosa as CEO at that time.
That roster date matters: Nissan’s news channel later listed a senior-management announcement dated September 18, 2026, effective October 1. The listing available here does not say whether the CEO changed, so it does not establish who held the role after that date. The listing alone cannot support a claim that Espinosa was replaced in October or that a change was intended to revive merger talks.
Had Nissan and Honda’s merger talks ended?
Yes. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding on December 23, 2024, to consider business integration. Their initial concept contemplated a joint holding company. On February 13, 2025, Nissan and Honda announced they were terminating the MOU and discontinuing consideration of integration. The joint announcement is the primary account of both the proposal and its termination.

The companies said they concluded ending the discussions was more appropriate to prioritize decision speed and execution amid changes in the market. They had also differed over governance: Honda proposed a parent-subsidiary structure with Honda as the parent and Nissan as the subsidiary, rather than the joint holding-company concept. The statement does not say the CEO succession was a response to those negotiations.
Why did the companies continue working together?
Ending corporate integration discussions did not end all cooperation. Nissan and Honda said they would continue a strategic partnership focused on the era of intelligent and electrified vehicles. In August 2026, the Associated Press reported that they had agreed to develop vehicle computer components and software jointly for vehicles expected to reach the market in fiscal 2029. That reported project is technical collaboration between companies that remain separate; it is not evidence that they restarted merger talks.
