The V16-powered Rolls-Royce Phantom was associated with Rowan Atkinson, the actor best known as Mr. Bean—not with the Mr. Bean character. It was a working one-off experimental car prepared for the 2011 film Johnny English Reborn, and Atkinson described its engine as a nine-litre V16.
Was the V16 Rolls-Royce really Mr. Bean’s car?
“Mr. Bean’s V16 Phantom” is shorthand for a car linked to Rowan Atkinson. The vehicle appeared in Johnny English Reborn, where Atkinson played secret agent Johnny English; it was not a car driven by Mr. Bean in the sitcom.
In a 2011 interview with The New Zealand Herald, Atkinson said he had persuaded Rolls-Royce to fit an experimental engine in a Phantom for the film. He described it as a real car that worked, rather than a prop made to look like a V16-powered vehicle. The New Zealand Herald’s 2011 interview quotes him: “I managed to persuade Rolls-Royce to dig out this ludicrous engine, this nine-litre V16, and it worked. It’s a real car and it really goes and it is unbelievably quick, but it’s a one-off experimental thing. But it’s a genuine delight.”
What engine was in Rowan Atkinson’s Phantom?
Atkinson’s quoted description identifies it as a nine-litre V16. A contemporaneous report by Ray Massey for IOL also described the film car as a specially adapted Phantom with a real, one-off nine-litre V16 engine. The IOL report called the car “Royce” and gave its registration as “JE 1.” The Guardian likewise reported in August 2011 that the upcoming Johnny English film featured a Rolls-Royce with a nine-litre V16. That report corroborates the basic engine description, but neither it nor the other cited reporting provides a full engineering specification.

What is known—and what is not
- Reported engine: a nine-litre V16, according to Atkinson and contemporary film coverage.
- Reported status: a working, one-off experimental car, not just a visual film prop.
- Unverified details: no independently published horsepower rating, torque figure, acceleration or top speed is established by these reports. Atkinson’s “unbelievably quick” is his subjective description, not a measured performance result.
How many V16 Phantom cars were made?
The cited accounts describe one V16-powered Phantom built for the film. They do not establish how many V16 engines were built, whether other experimental examples existed, or a broader production count. The safest answer is that one film car is documented in this reporting; a total engine count is not established.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was it a standard production Phantom?
No: the reports characterize this car as a specially adapted, one-off experimental Phantom. That distinguishes it from a regular production-model Phantom, but the available accounts do not supply a factory specification sheet or enough detail for a technical comparison of their engines or performance.

Does Rowan Atkinson still own the V16 Phantom?
The available reporting does not establish the car’s current owner, location, or condition. Massey’s 2011 IOL article said Atkinson had owned two Phantom cars—a four-door and a two-door coupé—and was awaiting a third at that time. That dated account does not identify the V16 film car as one of those cars or confirm who owns it today.
