No. Mitsubishi Motors did not join a completed Honda–Nissan merger. In December 2024, it agreed to explore possible involvement in Nissan and Honda’s proposed integration. The three automakers terminated that exploratory agreement on February 13, 2025, while saying their broader strategic partnership would continue.
What did Mitsubishi agree to in December 2024?
On December 23, 2024, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, and Honda signed a memorandum of understanding to explore whether Mitsubishi might participate in or otherwise be involved with Nissan and Honda’s proposed business integration through a joint holding company. The companies also said they would consider sharing synergies. Mitsubishi aimed to reach a conclusion about possible participation or involvement by the end of January 2025.
This was an exploratory step, not a merger agreement, a completed joining, or confirmation that Mitsubishi would become part of a combined company. Mitsubishi’s December 23 announcement describes what the companies had agreed to examine.
What had Mitsubishi said before the MOU?
On December 18, 2024, Mitsubishi said media reports that Honda and Nissan were considering integration with the possibility of Mitsubishi joining later were not based on an announcement from Mitsubishi. It said the companies were considering possible collaboration and that no decisions had been made. That clarification preceded the December 23 exploratory MOU. Why did the talks end?
On February 13, 2025, the three companies terminated their December MOU after Nissan and Honda ended their own MOU concerning business integration. That means the Mitsubishi-related exploration did not proceed under the agreement announced in December. The joint February 13 release records the termination and the companies’ next step.
What cooperation continued?
The companies said they would continue collaborating under the strategic partnership framework signed on August 1, 2024, focused on vehicle intelligence and electrification. The release described the continuing relationship as a strategic partnership—not a merger or a revival of the terminated integration MOU.

Later announcements also describe specific cooperation, but with distinct parties and purposes:
- Nissan and Honda software work: On August 31, 2026, Honda announced an agreement with Nissan to jointly develop and standardize core electronic control units (ECUs) and software for next-generation software-defined vehicles. The companies said the resulting electrical/electronic architecture was planned for their next-generation vehicles from fiscal 2029 onward. The announcement identifies Nissan and Honda as the parties; it does not say Mitsubishi joined the project or that merger talks resumed. See Honda’s announcement.
- Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicle programs: Nissan’s partnership overview describes work with Mitsubishi Motors as well as projects with Honda, including separate Nissan–Mitsubishi electric-vehicle and pickup programs. These are collaboration projects, not evidence that Mitsubishi joined a Nissan–Honda merger. Read Nissan’s partnership overview.
- A Nissan-supplied EV for North America: Mitsubishi announced in June 2026 that its North American companies planned to begin selling a Nissan-supplied Eclipse Sportback EV in the second half of 2026. That is an announced vehicle-supply arrangement, not a merger. Read Mitsubishi’s announcement.
The public announcements establish these stated agreements and plans; they do not settle whether any undisclosed private conversations took place.
