Ford’s move toward electric vehicles reduced and reshaped some engineering work in Europe, but the company’s public evidence does not show that combustion engineers as a group were simply made expendable. In 2023, Ford tied a planned reduction of 2,800 European engineering roles to fully electric powertrains and lower vehicle complexity. Its 2024 report also says some engineers with internal-combustion and emissions experience were applying their skills to EV-related systems. Those statements describe a changing mix of roles—not the individual outcome for every engineer.
What Ford said about European engineering jobs
On February 14, 2023, Ford announced plans to resize its European engineering footprint by 2,800 roles by 2025. The company cited the transition to fully electric powertrains and reduced vehicle complexity as reasons for the change. Ford said approximately 3,400 engineering roles would remain in Europe, focused on vehicle design and development and connected services. Ford’s announcement linked the engineering reduction to electrification, but did not say that all affected engineers worked on combustion engines.
Martin Sander, then general manager of Ford Model e in Europe, said the restructuring “will impact the organizational structure, talent, and skills we will need in the future.” That signals a change in the kinds of capabilities Ford expected to need; it does not identify the fate of particular employees.
Did combustion-engine engineers move into EV work?
Ford’s 2024 Integrated Report says engineers who had worked on internal-combustion engines and emissions systems were applying their modeling and experimental-testing skills to battery-safety systems, fuel-cell system components, and eMachine manufacturing. The report presents this as part of Ford’s internal upskilling and reskilling as the EV transition demands new skills and working habits. Ford’s 2024 Integrated Report

This is evidence that some existing technical skills could transfer to new powertrain and manufacturing problems. It does not quantify how many engineers moved into those areas, establish that every affected employee was retrained or retained, or account for everyone whose role changed or ended.
How the later European job plan differs
In November 2024, Ford announced a plan to reduce its European workforce by 4,000 positions by the end of 2027, subject to consultation with social partners. Most planned reductions were to affect Germany and the UK. Ford cited passenger-vehicle losses, weak economic conditions, lower-than-expected demand for electric cars, and competitive and regulatory pressure. The 2024 announcement concerned the wider workforce, not a further count of combustion-engineering jobs.

| Announcement | Scope and geography | Timing | Ford’s stated context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 plan: 2,800 planned role reductions | European engineering footprint | By 2025 | Fully electric powertrains and reduced vehicle complexity |
| 2023 plan: approximately 3,400 roles remaining | European engineering, focused on vehicle design and development and connected services | After the planned resizing | Ford’s stated remaining engineering focus |
| 2024 plan: 4,000 planned position reductions | Broader European workforce, mainly Germany and the UK | By the end of 2027; subject to consultation | Passenger-vehicle losses, economic conditions, lower-than-expected EV demand, and competitive and regulatory pressure |
The 2,800 and 4,000 figures describe plans announced at different times and with different scopes. They should not be added together or treated as a count of combustion engineers.

In December 2025, Ford said it would rationalize EV manufacturing capacity and its product roadmap, cancel three previously planned EVs, and end production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning. The company also described investment in trucks, hybrids, lower-cost EVs, and battery storage. Ford’s December 2025 strategy update shows the company adjusting its product mix in response to customers and market conditions, rather than following an uninterrupted move away from combustion vehicles.

What the evidence establishes—and what it does not
- Ford explicitly connected its 2023 European engineering-footprint reduction to electrification and lower vehicle complexity.
- Ford said approximately 3,400 engineering roles would remain in Europe, with a focus on design, development, and connected services.
- Ford reported that engineers with combustion and emissions backgrounds were applying modeling and testing skills to EV-related systems and manufacturing.
- The company’s public statements do not establish how many combustion engineers lost jobs, moved to other work, or stayed in their roles.
- The 2024 workforce plan had a broader scope and cited market and economic pressures in addition to the EV transition.
