For drivers who want a usable pickup bed without full-size-truck bulk, the 2025 Ford Maverick makes a strong case as one of 2025’s most sensible trucks. Its hybrid is EPA-estimated at up to 42 mpg city, while the truck offers 1,500 pounds of maximum payload and up to 4,000 pounds of towing when equipped with the available 4K Tow Package. Those are configuration-dependent maximums, not promises that every Maverick can reach all of them at once.
What makes the 2025 Maverick a sensible truck?
The Maverick is a compact pickup aimed at everyday utility: commuting, home-improvement runs, recreational equipment and modest trailer loads. Ford highlights its FLEXBED system, and Consumer Reports describes it as easy to maneuver. That mix can make more sense than buying a larger pickup if your routine does not call for full-size capacity.
Its defining argument is efficiency alongside pickup usefulness. Ford lists the hybrid at up to 42 mpg city, an EPA estimate rather than a guaranteed result for every driver or configuration. Car and Driver recorded 32 mpg in its 75-mph highway test of a 2025 Maverick Lobo; that single test applies to that tested configuration and should not be treated as a result for every Maverick.
Ford’s headline figures need to be read separately: the published maximum payload is 1,500 pounds, and maximum towing is 2,000 pounds standard or 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package. The exact ratings depend on the vehicle’s configuration. Check the door-label information and the specific truck’s documentation before loading it or choosing a trailer.

Can a 2025 Maverick tow 4,000 pounds?
Yes, when properly equipped with the 4K Tow Package; Ford lists 2,000 pounds as the standard maximum and 4,000 pounds with that package. The 4,000-pound figure is not the rating for every Maverick. If you are shopping inventory or a used truck, confirm the package and the rating for that exact vehicle rather than relying on a model-wide headline.
Towing capacity also does not replace payload planning. Passengers, cargo and trailer-related loads all matter to the vehicle’s limits. Use the truck’s own ratings and the trailer’s loaded weight, and leave margin rather than assuming the maximum is a routine target.

Is the Maverick hybrid worth choosing?
The hybrid is especially compelling if fuel economy is a priority and your driving includes regular commuting. Ford publishes an EPA-estimated figure of up to 42 mpg city for the 2025 Maverick hybrid. That is a manufacturer-listed estimate; actual economy varies with driving conditions, configuration and use.
Do not decide on a universal fuel-cost calculation without your annual mileage, local fuel price and the exact powertrain you are comparing. Instead, compare the hybrid and nonhybrid versions you can actually buy, along with their equipment and ratings, against your driving pattern.

How does the Maverick compare with the Hyundai Santa Cruz?
The choice is less about naming a universal winner than matching the truck to your priorities. An Associated Press/Edmunds comparison characterizes the Maverick as the better fit for buyers seeking typical pickup utility or strong fuel economy, while describing the Santa Cruz as more comfortable and classier inside, with greater maximum towing when properly equipped.
| Consideration | 2025 Ford Maverick | Hyundai Santa Cruz |
|---|---|---|
| Efficiency context | Ford lists up to 42 mpg city, EPA-estimated, for the hybrid. The AP/Edmunds comparison reports 38 mpg combined for the hybrid configuration it discusses. | The AP/Edmunds comparison reports 25 mpg combined for the base-engine configuration it discusses. |
| Towing context | 2,000 pounds standard maximum; up to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow Package, according to Ford’s technical specifications. | The comparison describes greater maximum towing when properly equipped; its cited summary does not state a figure. |
| Cabin and feel | Reviewers describe it as more truck-like and easy to maneuver. | The comparison describes it as more comfortable and classier inside. |
The mileage figures in the comparison refer to the configurations discussed there, not every version of either vehicle. For current specifications, verify the original EPA labels and the exact vehicle’s equipment. Road-test impressions are useful context, not a guarantee of every owner’s experience.

What can make the Maverick less sensible?
Regular heavy towing or hauling
A compact pickup is not a substitute for a larger truck if your regular work requires more towing or payload than the Maverick’s configuration allows. Treat the 4,000-pound maximum as an equipped-vehicle rating, not a reason to overlook payload, passenger weight or your actual trailer load.
Options and configured price
Car and Driver notes that options such as towing equipment and driver-assistance features can move the Maverick into the mid-$30,000 range. That is review context, not a current quote or a prediction of your local transaction price. Compare actual build sheets and offers before deciding that the entry price tells the whole story.

Comfort priorities
If a comfortable, more upscale-feeling cabin matters more than the Maverick’s efficiency and conventional pickup utility, the Santa Cruz deserves a direct comparison. Sit in both and assess the ride and cabin for yourself; published reviewer impressions cannot establish which will feel better to you.

- List your routine loads. Include passengers, cargo, the heaviest items you carry and any trailer in its loaded condition.
- Check the exact vehicle’s ratings. Confirm payload and towing figures for the trim, powertrain and equipment on the specific truck. Do not assume the 4K Tow Package is present because an advertisement mentions towing.
- Choose the powertrain around your use. If city fuel economy is central, compare the hybrid’s EPA estimate with the configuration you are considering and your real driving pattern.
- Compare complete prices. Add the equipment you need, then compare actual offers rather than relying on a base-price impression.
- Test the daily fit. Consider maneuverability, bed use, ride comfort and cabin space alongside the numbers.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Ford’s product page and technical specifications establish the manufacturer’s published capability claims. Independent reviews and the AP/Edmunds comparison add context about driving impressions and alternatives. They do not establish local inventory, current transaction prices, incentives or long-term reliability. No one truck can be called the most sensible for every buyer; that depends on the job, configuration and price.
