But the claim that it gave up more than 150,000 sales is an estimate based on those models’ sales volume—not a Ford forecast of sales it formally chose to sacrifice. Ford says the pickup is due in 2027; the reported “Fathom” name and $30,000 price have not been confirmed in Ford’s cited report.
What Ford has confirmed about the new electric pickup
Ford’s 2026 Integrated Sustainability and Financial Report identifies the first vehicle on its Universal EV platform as a midsize, four-door electric pickup. Ford plans to assemble it at Louisville Assembly Plant, with launch scheduled for 2027. The company’s plant directory likewise says Louisville is being retooled for a midsize electric truck and describes it as the platform’s first vehicle.
Ford describes the vehicle as part of a family of affordable EVs. The report does not name it Fathom or specify a $30,000 price. Those details have been reported by The Drive, and should be treated as outlet-reported rather than confirmed Ford specifications.
What the “more than 150,000 sales” figure means
The headline figure concerns the combined sales volume of two Louisville-built models: the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair. The Drive reports that Ford ended production of both to make room at the plant for the future electric truck. Its estimate is not evidence that Ford published a forecast of exactly how many sales it would surrender.

| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| 114,000 Escapes and 19,000 Corsairs | The Drive’s figures for sales by the comparable point in 2025. |
| About 37,000 combined units | The Drive’s account of the remaining Escape and Corsair volume in 2026. |
| About 160,000 combined sales | The Drive’s estimate of what annual Escape and Corsair sales might have totaled absent the production gap—not an official Ford forecast. |
The Drive also characterizes the difference between the prior-year comparison and the roughly 37,000 units in 2026 as a year-to-date shortfall of about 100,000. The figures describe different measures: the reported year-to-date comparison and an estimate of a full year without the production gap. They should not be added together or treated as a precise tally of lost customers.
Why Ford may accept the near-term volume trade-off
The immediate cost is the loss of established crossover production at Louisville. The intended gain is capacity for a new vehicle and platform Ford has designated as part of an affordable EV family. That makes the decision a bet on future product demand and manufacturing economics, not proof that every Escape or Corsair buyer will switch to the truck.

The Drive’s 2026 comparison suggests that gains elsewhere have not made up for the missing volume. It reports Bronco Sport sales up about 2.9%, or roughly 3,000 units, and says Explorer gains would amount to about 29,000 additional sales even under the hypothetical that all of the increase came from former Escape customers. Those are the outlet’s figures and interpretation; they do not establish how many buyers actually changed models.
What remains unknown
- Final name and price: Ford’s cited report confirms neither “Fathom” nor a $30,000 price; those are The Drive’s reporting.
- Detailed specifications: The cited Ford information establishes the body type, size category, assembly location and planned launch year, but not a complete specification sheet.
- Sales impact: The 150,000-plus framing summarizes estimated Escape and Corsair volume, rather than a Ford-published count of buyers or a formal sales forecast.
- Replacement demand: The available figures do not show whether future pickup buyers will come from Escape or Corsair owners, other vehicle segments, or new-to-Ford customers.
When is Ford’s affordable electric pickup coming?
Ford’s 2026 report schedules the first Universal EV platform pickup for launch in 2027 and identifies Louisville Assembly as its production site. That is the current announced schedule, not a guarantee that timing or product details cannot change.
