What did Musk say, and when?
In July 2024, after the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, Musk publicly endorsed Trump. In a post on X, he wrote: “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.” Reuters reported the endorsement.
Did the endorsement make people less likely to buy a Tesla?
A February 2025 Data for Progress poll, reported by Heatmap, found that 45% of likely U.S. voters said Musk made them less likely to buy or lease a Tesla. That is a measure of stated intention, not a count of people who actually canceled or changed a purchase. Heatmap also cautions that its likely-voter result is not perfectly comparable with earlier polls of all U.S. adults.
The poll supports saying that Musk’s public profile put a substantial share of likely voters off buying or leasing a Tesla. It does not establish that all Tesla buyers felt disgust, nor that every respondent would have bought a Tesla otherwise. Heatmap’s report discusses the poll and its comparison limits.

Did Tesla owners stop buying another Tesla?
Vehicle-registration data offers a separate view: what households that already owned a Tesla did when they were in the market for another car. S&P Global Mobility data reported by Reuters showed Tesla loyalty at 73% in June 2024, then 49.9% in March 2025, before recovering to 57.4% in May 2025.

These figures describe the share of Tesla-owning households in the market for a new car that bought another Tesla. They are not a measure of all car shoppers, and a change in loyalty by itself cannot identify why a household switched. The data show a marked dip followed by a partial recovery, not a simple or complete break with the brand. Reuters’ report on the S&P Global Mobility figures provides the series.

How did the wider public view Musk and Tesla?
An AP-NORC survey conducted June 5–9, 2025, found that 57% of U.S. adults had an unfavorable impression of Musk and about half had a negative view of Tesla. The survey included 1,158 adults and had an overall margin of sampling error of ±4.0 percentage points. These are general-public sentiment results—not findings limited to Tesla owners or people considering a car purchase. The Associated Press reported the AP-NORC results.
Was politics the reason Tesla sales fell?
Politics was one part of Tesla’s challenge, but the available figures do not isolate its effect from other causes. The Associated Press reported that Tesla sales fell 13% in the first three months of 2025, citing company figures, and described backlash alongside an aging lineup and competition as factors in the company’s difficulty attracting buyers. That sales decline cannot be attributed to Musk’s endorsement alone.

The distinctions matter: a poll records what people say they might do; loyalty data records repeat purchases among a defined group of Tesla-owning households; sales figures capture company performance without proving what motivated each buyer. Taken together, they support a real but qualified conclusion: Musk’s politics alienated some prospective buyers and owners during a period when Tesla also faced product and competitive pressures. AP’s report on Tesla sales and the company’s challenges covers those factors.

On March 29, 2025, protests took place at Tesla locations across the United States and at some sites in Europe. AP reported that disillusioned owners were among the movement’s supporters. It also described Tesla owners using bumper stickers to distance themselves from Musk. These are visible examples of owner reaction, not evidence that such protests or stickers were common among all Tesla customers. AP’s protest report documents the demonstrations.
