Did a Red-Light Camera Catch You? How to Check for a Ticket

A camera flash is not proof that a citation was issued. Find the right local portal, check a notice safely, or contact the agency if the ticket is missing.

A camera flash alone does not confirm that a red-light citation was issued. To find out, check the official camera-enforcement, traffic, or court channel for the city or county where the intersection is located. If you have a notice, use its citation number and any PIN; if it is missing, contact the responsible agency using contact details from its official website.

What does a red-light camera flash mean?

A flash may mean the system captured images, but that is not the same as a citation being issued. In New Jersey, for example, a vendor screens images and sends suspected violations to police for a final review and decision. That describes New Jersey’s program, not every jurisdiction. New Jersey Department of Transportation red-light camera FAQ.

There is no reliable nationwide percentage that tells you whether a flash will lead to a ticket. The process, evidence access, and lookup route depend on the local program.

How to check whether a citation was issued

  1. Identify the intersection’s city or county. Camera citations are handled locally, so start with the jurisdiction where the event occurred—not necessarily where you live.
  2. Find that jurisdiction’s official citation page. Look on the city or county court, police, transportation, or municipal website for traffic citations or automated enforcement. Avoid unfamiliar payment sites reached through ads or unsolicited messages.
  3. If you have a notice, follow its instructions. Enter the citation or notice number and any PIN or security code printed on it. Use the notice’s directions to view available photos or video.
  4. If you do not have the notice, contact the issuing agency or court. Use a phone number or contact page you found independently on an official government website. Be ready to give the intersection and approximate date. A general court case search may not include camera citations.
  5. If evidence access fails, ask the issuing agency for help. The police department or camera-enforcement agency may handle image or video access. Check any response deadline printed on the notice and do not miss it while troubleshooting a portal.

Why the lookup process varies by location

Local authorities use different notice formats, portals, credentials, and case-search systems. These official examples show why there is no single national lookup page:

Jurisdiction How the notice or evidence is handled What to do if you need help
Sacramento County, California Local law-enforcement agencies issue automated-enforcement citations to registered owners at the address provided by DMV. Available images and video can be accessed through Photo Notice using the ticket number and the participating city’s code. If you were not driving, the court says to contact the issuing agency or appear by the date on the ticket. Failure to respond can add penalties. Sacramento Superior Court.
San Mateo County, California The notice includes a photo but not the video. Online video access follows the citation’s instructions and may require a security code. View the evidence before deciding whether to request a trial; contact police with evidence-access questions. San Mateo County Superior Court.
Maryland Automated camera citations do not appear in Maryland Judiciary Case Search. For a lost citation, contact the local jurisdiction, Maryland State Police for a state-highway citation, or Maryland Transportation Authority for a toll violation. Maryland Courts traffic information.
Delaware The program portal uses the 11-digit notice number and PIN shown on the notice. The DMV page lists a toll-free number for lost video citations and questions about payment, legal options, or footage. Delaware DMV red-light safety program.
Napa, California A confirmed notice is mailed with event photos; the city says a 12-second video is available online. The portal requires the citation number and unique PIN printed on the notice. Use the city’s citation portal and notice credentials. City of Napa red-light camera enforcement.

What if a court search shows no ticket?

Do not treat a blank search result as proof that no camera citation exists. Some jurisdictions keep these citations out of general case-search systems; Maryland Courts explicitly says camera citations are not listed in Judiciary Case Search. Check the relevant local camera-enforcement instructions or contact the issuing jurisdiction directly.

What if you lost the notice or cannot view the evidence?

Use the official contact route for the jurisdiction where the camera is located. Some agencies can help identify a notice or restore access when you provide the event location and date. Delaware, for example, lists a phone number for lost video citations and footage questions; Maryland directs people with lost citations to the relevant local or state agency. Do not assume another county’s court search will find the record.

How to check safely for ticket scams

Be cautious with unsolicited texts claiming you owe a traffic-camera fine. Do not click payment links or scan QR codes until you verify the claim through a government website or phone number you located independently. San Francisco Superior Court warns that “The court does not send traffic text messages.” That warning concerns the San Francisco court; verify communications with the court or agency in your own jurisdiction.
