The claim is not verified by the current reliability findings available here. Consumer Reports’ current EV coverage names the Tesla Model Y its most reliable new EV in its survey summary and says Hyundai and Kia trail it. The specific Hyundai model and older ranking implied by the headline have not been identified, so it would be misleading to name a Hyundai winner.
What current Consumer Reports coverage says
Consumer Reports says the Tesla Model Y is the most reliable new EV in its current survey summary, while Hyundai and Kia fall behind. Its coverage also flags recurring reliability problems affecting the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6. The accessible summary does not provide an IONIQ 5 score or a complete ranked table, and it does not establish how every Hyundai EV compares with every Tesla or Toyota model. Consumer Reports’ current reliability coverage
That finding does not prove that Tesla ranks above Toyota in every reliability study. Rankings depend on the publisher, vehicles, model years, and measurement method; a claim that one Hyundai EV beat both brands needs the original ranking to be checked against those details.
Why the title’s claim needs a specific source
“Reliability ratings” can refer to different kinds of evidence. Consumer Reports uses member-reported problems to predict reliability. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study instead counts problems reported by owners after a defined period of ownership. A score or result from one system cannot be treated as a direct ranking in the other.

- 2.[Safe & Odorless TPE Material] Crafted from 100% non-toxic, recyclable TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer). Latex and PVC-free, ensuring no unpleasant rubber odor even in extreme summer heat, maintaining a fresh in-car environment.
- 3.[All-Weather Extreme Protection] High-wall perimeter design traps dirt, rain, snow, mud, and liquid spills securely. Engineered to stay flexible and crack-free across harsh temperatures ranging from -40°F to 175°F.
- 4.[Anti-Slip & Enhanced Safety] Textured surface pattern channels fluids away from footwear, while the non-skid underside locks firmly with your vehicle’s floor pins, ensuring zero interference with the accelerator and brake pedals.
- 5.[Effortless Cleaning & Maintenance] Stain-resistant and waterproof surface allows quick cleanup. Simply remove the liners, hose them down with water or wipe with a damp towel, let dry, and re-install in minutes.
- Models and years: A comparison must identify the exact Hyundai, Tesla, and Toyota vehicles and model years. A brand average is not a head-to-head model result.
- Market and timing: The country and survey field dates matter because availability and results can vary by market and year.
- Metric: Predicted reliability, reported problems after three years, and an overall brand score are not interchangeable.
- Study coverage: Sample size and rules for which models qualify affect what a ranking can show.
The particular older or alternative ranking behind the headline remains unidentified. Without its publisher, date, market, comparison set, and scoring method, there is no reliable basis for saying which Hyundai EV supposedly beat Tesla and Toyota.
How the two current study results differ
Consumer Reports: predicted reliability from member surveys
Consumer Reports’ current survey coverage represents about 380,000 vehicles, spanning model years 2000 through 2025 and a few early 2026 models. Its brand ranking required data for at least two models drawn from at least two recent model years. These are U.S.-oriented member-survey findings used to predict reliability—not controlled tests of every vehicle or guarantees about an individual car. J.D. Power: reported problems after three years
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Fielded from August through November 2024, it covered 184 problem areas across nine categories. The overall result was 202 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100); lower PP100 indicates fewer reported problems and higher dependability. J.D. Power’s 2025 study details
| Vehicle type | 2025 U.S. VDS result |
|---|---|
| Battery-electric vehicles | 223 PP100 |
| Gas-powered vehicles | 200 PP100 |
| Hybrids | 199 PP100 |
Those are study-wide fuel-type averages, not scores for a specific Hyundai, Tesla, or Toyota. They cannot identify a winning model or confirm the headline’s comparison.

What this means if you are comparing EVs
Use a reliability result only for the models and years it actually covers. For a Hyundai-versus-Tesla-or-Toyota comparison, first locate the original ranking and verify its model years, market, field dates, sample, metric, and whether it ranks models or brands. Until that source is identified, the defensible conclusion is limited: current Consumer Reports coverage favors the Model Y in its new-EV survey summary, flags recurring IONIQ 5 issues, and does not establish a Hyundai EV as the reliability winner over both Tesla and Toyota.
