No published source we can point you to establishes a reliability ranking or current used asking prices for ten named models, so a list of ten would rest on brand reputation rather than evidence. What the 2024 figures do establish is a price benchmark, and that benchmark is useful for screening only once you know which market and which measure it describes. The sections below set out that benchmark, the kind of evidence that makes a model “dependable,” and a method for building a shortlist you can defend.
The 2024 benchmark and the market it belongs to
The title compares German SUVs with the average price of a new vehicle in 2024. That average depends on the country and on the measure used, so the two verifiable 2024 figures cannot be swapped for one another:

This guide uses the German figures because the title names German SUVs. The U.S. figure appears only to show why it cannot stand in for the German one. Converting dollars to euros would add an exchange rate and a date that the sources do not supply, so the two should never be set side by side as if they measured the same thing.
What the €43,530 threshold can and cannot screen out
The €43,530 figure averages every new vehicle sold in Germany in 2024, from small cars to large SUVs and vans. It is a market reference point, not a ceiling for SUV prices. The €18,600 used average has the same limitation: it covers all used vehicles, not SUVs.

As a filter for used cars, “cheaper than the new average” is loose. Almost any used SUV falls below €43,530, so passing the test says nothing about whether a car is well built or well kept. A tighter test compares each listing with other cars of the same model year, body style, engine, drivetrain and mileage.
The 2024 figures are also dated. For listings you see in 2026, check the latest release from ADAC or DAT, because the 2024 numbers cannot show what the market looks like now.

Why this guide does not name ten models
Three things are missing before a list of ten German SUVs could be called dependable:
- A reliability ranking that names specific models and model years and states how its data was collected.
- Used asking or transaction prices for each model, in the same market and the same period.
- Ten models assessed on the same model years, configurations and type of evidence, so that the ten can be compared directly.
Four starting points, not recommendations
Consumer Reports publishes 2024 overview pages for four German SUVs. They are a reasonable place to begin your own check:

An overview page describes a model; it is not by itself a reliability ranking, and it does not give used prices. Consumer Reports is a U.S. publisher, so read the methodology on each page and confirm that its findings cover the model years, engines and drivetrains sold in your market before treating any of these four as a shortlist entry.
What counts as evidence that a model is dependable
“Dependable” needs three things: a named source, defined model years, and a stated type of evidence. The table shows how common kinds of evidence measure up.

Model year matters as much as model name. A generation change or engine revision can move a model’s record a long way, so a survey result for one year does not transfer automatically to the next.
What to check on an individual used SUV
- Mileage against age: whether the odometer reading fits the car’s age and its service history.
- Dated service records: invoices showing that scheduled services were done on time, not undated entries.
- Inspection findings: the latest HU report, and whether any listed defects were repaired.
- Drivetrain: all-wheel-drive versions carry extra components, so ask for records of their service as well as the engine’s.
- Repair history: prior engine, transmission, electrical or warranty repairs, and whether each was completed.
- Exact configuration: the model year, engine and drivetrain you are evaluating, since one model name often covers several engines and drivetrains.
Ownership cost is more than the purchase price
ADAC’s 2026 SUV buying guide points buyers to running costs and depreciation as factors beyond the purchase price. That guidance is German-market context; it is not a U.S. model-by-model cost study. For each candidate, estimate:

- Maintenance: scheduled service and consumables, using the interval and cost for that model year.
- Repairs: expected repair exposure, based on the model’s record in the evidence you collected.
- Fuel: consumption for the engine and drivetrain you would buy, at your annual mileage.
- Insurance: a quote for the specific model, since premiums vary by car and by driver.
- Depreciation: how much value the car is likely to lose over the years you plan to keep it.
How to build your own ten-model shortlist
- Fix the benchmark. Use €43,530 (German new-vehicle average, 2024) or the current figure from the same publisher, and write down the currency and year on your worksheet.
- Define dependability. Choose one or more named sources, the model years you will accept, and the evidence types from the table above. Record which generation each model year belongs to.
- Collect like-for-like prices. For each candidate, record asking prices for the same model year, body style, engine, drivetrain and mileage band. Treat the €18,600 used average as background only.
- Screen each car. Apply the individual checks above to every listing you would consider, and drop any car with missing or undated records.
- Estimate running costs. Total the five cost categories for each surviving candidate over the period you plan to keep the car, then compare candidates on that total rather than on the listing price alone.
