DENZA, BYD Group’s premium automotive brand, has officially launched in the UK. Its announced range spans a high-performance electric grand tourer, a seven-seat plug-in hybrid MPV and a plug-in hybrid SUV, with UK prices starting at £69,500. That makes DENZA a more varied premium-market arrival than a single-model launch—but whether it becomes a significant challenger to German marques will depend on deliveries, independent testing and the ownership experience, none of which UK launch announcements can settle.
Which Chinese car brand is coming to the UK?
It is DENZA, a premium brand within BYD Group. BYD’s UK announcement says DENZA began in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz and is now wholly owned by BYD. The company says German designer Wolfgang Egger guides its design direction. BYD UK’s brand announcement gives that background; it does not make DENZA a Mercedes-Benz product.

DENZA had already made a UK debut at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The story has since moved beyond a preview: the brand’s UK site describes its Goodwood launch, and official UK releases have set prices for three models. T3’s March 2026 article framed the arrival as a challenge to Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche; current model and price details are better taken from DENZA’s subsequent UK announcements. T3’s original report is useful for that earlier framing, not as a guide to today’s launch status.
Is DENZA on sale in the UK?
DENZA has announced UK prices and ordering information, but the three models do not share the same customer-delivery timing. The D9 was announced as available to order in August 2026. The BAO 5’s first customer deliveries are due in early 2027, according to DENZA. The Z9 GT electric car is the launch lead; its plug-in hybrid version is due to join it later. The announcements do not establish that all three models are already being delivered.

All prices below are UK manufacturer-recommended retail prices (MRRP) in DENZA’s 2026 UK announcements. They are not evidence of transaction prices, finance offers or dealer discounts.

What is the Z9 GT, and what does DENZA claim it can do?
Z9 GT electric
The battery-electric Z9 GT is the most expensive announced version at £105,000 MRRP. DENZA lists a 122kWh battery, a 373-mile combined-cycle WLTP range, 1,156PS, 0–62mph in 2.7 seconds and a 167mph top speed. Its three motors are arranged with one at the front and two at the rear. These are figures published by the manufacturer, not independently verified performance results.

It claims a 10% to 70% charge in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes, adding 323 miles of WLTP range in those nine minutes. For cold-weather operation, it claims 20% to 97% charging in 12 minutes at −30°C. The UK release does not establish that suitable chargers are available nationwide, or that a particular UK charging stop will reproduce these figures. Charging speed depends on the vehicle, charger and conditions.

The release lists a dedicated e³ platform, rear-wheel steering, crab-walk movement, a 360-degree compass turn and a 5.35m turning radius. It also describes a tyre-blowout mitigation response claimed to operate at speeds up to 112mph. Cabin specifications include Nappa leather with heating, ventilation and massage functions, plus a 20-speaker, 1,150W Devialet sound system. These are stated features and capabilities, not independent judgments of how well they work or whether they justify the price.
Z9 GT DM plug-in hybrid
The Z9 GT DM is listed from £95,000 MRRP and is due to arrive after the electric version. DENZA quotes 776PS, 0–62mph in 3.6 seconds, up to 126 miles of electric-only driving and 500 miles of total range with a full battery and full petrol tank. The electric-only and total-range figures are manufacturer claims; the release does not provide independent test results.

How do the D9 and BAO 5 differ?
D9: a seven-seat plug-in hybrid MPV
The D9 is the range’s people-carrier: a seven-seat plug-in hybrid offered in Elegance at £75,000 MRRP and Ultimate at £85,000 MRRP. DENZA lists a 58.5kWh battery, up to 130 miles of electric-only range and up to 590 miles total range. Its announcement describes FLASH Charging, powered sliding doors, a powered tailgate and a 15.6-inch touchscreen.

BAO 5: a plug-in hybrid SUV
The BAO 5 is the SUV option, with Elegance priced at £69,500 MRRP and Ultimate at £78,880 MRRP. DENZA quotes 544PS, up to 56 miles of electric range and 519 miles of combined range. It says first customer deliveries are due in early 2027.
DENZA describes a DMO plug-in hybrid system, ladder-frame chassis and off-road equipment. The Ultimate adds DiSus-P suspension, with up to 140mm of ride-height adjustment. These are manufacturer descriptions; the UK announcement does not supply an independent off-road comparison or test.

That remains an argument, not an established market result. DENZA’s arrival is notable for the breadth of its announced range: it is not relying on one electric SUV to introduce the name, but pairing an electric performance car with a plug-in hybrid luxury MPV and a plug-in hybrid SUV. Its BYD ownership and former Mercedes-Benz joint-venture history also give the brand a distinct European connection.
But a striking specification sheet and a UK price list do not show whether buyers will choose DENZA over established premium brands. The available announcements do not establish UK sales, customer response, real-world range, residual values, warranty terms, servicing coverage or long-term reliability. Nor do they demonstrate that the cars’ performance, comfort or technology match the claims in day-to-day use. Those questions require ownership evidence and independent testing.
What should buyers check before comparing DENZA with German premium cars?
Use the announced prices and features as a starting point, then verify the details that affect ownership and use:
