One builder’s 2024 recollection describes marker lamps, battery-powered lighting and plywood panels finished to look like chrome—but those are examples from a particular build, not a universal formula.
What is a Dekochari?
The name is commonly explained as combining “deko,” meaning decoration, with “chari,” a colloquial term for bicycle. That explanation appears in a secondary reference rather than a formal linguistic source, so it is best treated as an informal description. Visually, Dekochari refers to bicycles decorated in the conspicuous style associated with Dekotora, Japan’s decorated trucks.
A 2024 feature tells the story through former builder Kattobimaru, who recalled wanting to imitate truck culture before he was old enough to drive. A secondary reference dates the style’s beginnings to the mid-1970s, but the interview does not independently establish that date. The origin timeline is therefore attributed rather than settled.
How were Dekochari decorated?
The 2024 account offers a close-up of one remembered approach, not a standard parts list. Its details show how builders could adapt truck-inspired decoration to bicycle scale.
#1 Best Overall
- This artwork shows two parked bicycles with baskets leaning against a traditional Japanese wooden alley at dusk, with wet reflective paving and Japanese text on a shop curtain. It fits well as quiet vintage decor for small entryway nooks.
- This aluminum decorative sign is durable and rust-resistant, perfect for humid entryway or patio spaces where paper decor degrades easily.
- UV printing preserves the warm golden lighting and cool shadow contrast of this street scene, keeping colors vivid long-term to solve fading for sun-exposed decor.
- Measuring 8 x 12 inches, it has four pre-drilled holes for easy hanging with nails or hooks, ideal for compact Japanese-themed kitchen or entryway wall spaces.
- It is an ideal gift for Japan travel lovers and urban art fans, solving the problem of finding unique, compact themed decor for their collections.
Panels with a chrome-like finish
Kattobimaru recalled shaping panels from plywood. In the featured example, thin stainless steel was attached to the plywood; on earlier builds, he used chrome-plated tape or a similar chrome-effect covering. These materials created a bright, reflective surface without making the bicycle itself a truck-style body.
Marker lamps and battery-powered lighting
The retrospective describes marker lamps and battery-powered illumination on the builder’s bicycle. Kattobimaru recalled that wiring the lighting was difficult, and that he salvaged a headlight from an old “supercar bicycle.” The feature does not provide a wiring diagram, component specifications or evidence that the arrangement was suitable for road use.

Learning by doing
Kattobimaru said he taught himself how to modify the bicycle, use tools and handle wiring. That is one builder’s account; it does not establish how other Dekochari were made or whether they followed the same process.
What Dekochari says about Japanese bicycle culture
The Dekochari story sits alongside a broader Japanese culture of adapting bicycles to particular uses and tastes, but that wider context should not be mistaken for direct evidence about Dekochari. The Japanese government’s February 2026 feature on the mama-chari describes an everyday bicycle shaped by practical transportation needs. It is a different tradition from elaborate truck-inspired decoration, but it illustrates how bicycles have been adapted to daily life in Japan: Government of Japan, “The Mama-chari: A Bicycle Rooted in Japanese Daily Life”.

Bicycle art has also appeared in institutional settings. The Hachioji Yume Art Museum’s 2021 exhibition “Art Scene with Bicycles” presented bicycle-related works alongside actual bicycles. The exhibition offers an example of bicycles being considered through art and design, but it did not document Dekochari specifically: Hachioji Yume Art Museum, “Art Scene with Bicycles”.

The most detailed Dekochari-specific account here is a 2024 retrospective interview, so its construction details are best read as one former builder’s memories. A secondary reference supplies the mid-1970s timeline, but the interview does not confirm it. Official and museum sources add context about Japanese bicycles and bicycle art, not a verified institutional history of Dekochari.

As a result, the evidence supports a clear description of the style and a few specific examples of decoration, but not claims about how common it is today, how many builders or clubs exist, what a typical modern build costs, or whether a particular setup is roadworthy. The interview is available at WEB CARTOP, “デコトラに憧れた子供が熱中! デコチャリって一体どうやってつくるの?”; the cautiously useful secondary overview is Wikipedia’s “Dekochari” entry.
