Yes, but only in specific circumstances. Most EV owners are more likely to save on electricity by charging at cheaper times than to earn cash by sending power back to the grid. Direct export payments require a compatible vehicle and bidirectional charger, utility approval, and an active local program. There is no standard national rate or typical household earning.
What kind of EV charging benefit can you get?
Three different arrangements are often grouped together, but only one can pay you for energy exported to the grid.
- Managed charging (V1G): Software changes when or how quickly your car charges to fit your schedule, electricity rates, or grid conditions. It can reduce charging costs or help the grid, but it does not send electricity from the car back to the grid. The U.S. Department of Energy describes managed charging as charging that considers vehicle energy needs and control objectives, often to support the grid or reduce charging impacts (DOE Federal Energy Management Program).
- Vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-building (V2H/V2B): A bidirectional vehicle can discharge power to a home or building—for example, as backup or to reduce purchases during expensive hours. Backup power alone does not mean the utility pays you.
- Vehicle-to-grid (V2G): A compatible vehicle and bidirectional charger export power through an approved grid connection. A utility or program may compensate you, but DOE says programs that incentivize V2G for vehicle applications are not yet widely in place (DOE Federal Energy Management Program).
An ordinary one-way home charger is not enough to export battery energy. The vehicle, charger, installation, utility interconnection, and program all have to work together.
What can you realistically earn?
There is no authoritative national figure for typical household V2G earnings. Program amounts are local and depend on eligible equipment, utility approval, event frequency, how much energy you supply, and the program’s payment rules. A gift card for enrolling or a lower bill from off-peak charging is also different from payment for exported energy.

Tesla ELRP A.5 in California
Tesla’s current program page describes compensation of $2 per incremental kilowatt-hour discharged during a qualifying event for eligible participants. Its example calculates up to $690 from 11.5 kW of continuous output over 30 event hours ($2 × 11.5 kW × 30 hours). That is a maximum potential calculation under the stated assumptions—not a forecast or guaranteed payment. Actual compensation depends on event participation, vehicle availability, and energy shared. Eligibility is utility-controlled and limited to qualifying Tesla Powershare setups and residential account conditions. Participants also pay their charging and other electricity-use costs, and Tesla’s terms describe access to personal and energy-use information for program administration (Tesla Powershare support).
PG&E programs in California
PG&E offers several distinct options; their incentives should not be mistaken for a universal export rate.

For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
- Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.
- V2X: The utility says residential and commercial customers may qualify for incentives subject to program requirements. Options include backup-power testing and grid-connected participation. PG&E advises checking eligible products and discussing home readiness with an electrician before buying; interconnection and rate conditions apply. Its page says enrollment closes June 30, 2027 (PG&E V2X).
- Hourly Flex Pricing: Customers can shift charging to cheaper hours and may discharge at high-price times. Prices vary hourly, are forecast seven days ahead, and set one day ahead. Customers continue paying the regular bill; PG&E says it provides a credit after each 12 months if the comparison rate would have cost less. Charging costs and export savings or earnings are reflected at annual true-up. Listed requirements include Rule 21 interconnection and CCA participation where applicable. Customers with existing solar may join V2X and backup testing, but PG&E says they cannot join Hourly Flex Pricing (PG&E V2X).
- EV Charge Manager: Eligible customers can receive a $75 Tango gift card after at least three months of enrollment and WeaveGrid connectivity at least 50% of the time. This is an enrollment incentive, not payment for exported electricity. The current offer is limited to residential PG&E customers in Santa Clara, Contra Costa, Alameda, or San Mateo County who live in a single-family or detached home and own or lease an eligible Tesla, or use a supported Wallbox, ChargePoint, or Emporia charger. The utility says the program is free for qualified drivers and schedules charging for off-peak periods (PG&E EV Charge Manager).
Bidirectional Energy’s advertised estimate
Bidirectional Energy advertises $500–$1,500 per year for selling excess energy to the grid. That is the company’s claim, not an independently verified typical result. As of January 2025, the company identified the Kia EV9 and Wallbox Quasar 2 as eligible. Before relying on the estimate, confirm current geography, vehicle-and-charger eligibility, payment calculation, and full program terms (Bidirectional Energy revenue; compatibility information).
What must be in place before you can export power?
Buying a charger advertised as bidirectional does not by itself authorize grid export. California Energy Commission guidance says: “Before delivering power to the grid, customers must go through the utility’s interconnection process and receive Permission to Operate from the utility” (California Energy Commission V2G equipment list).

Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
- Verify the vehicle-and-charger pairing. Check that your specific vehicle supports bidirectional power with the specific charger and required equipment. Compatibility lists change; the Kia EV9 and Wallbox Quasar 2 pairing was listed by Bidirectional Energy as of January 2025, not as a universal or permanent approval.
- Check equipment certification and utility rules. The CEC registry covers UL 1741-certified bidirectional equipment, but the utility can still reject an application for other reasons. Certification is not Permission to Operate.
- Confirm an active program in your service area. Ask the utility or program operator about customer and equipment eligibility, enrollment dates, rates, interconnection requirements, and any CCA or aggregator conditions.
- Complete interconnection and receive Permission to Operate. Do not plan on exporting power until the utility has approved the installation.
How to judge whether a program is worth it
Compare the full economics and the control you give the program—not just the headline payment.
- Up-front costs: Include the bidirectional charger, electrical work, installation, and any home-readiness upgrades. Ask whether an incentive applies to these costs or is paid separately.
- Net payment: Find out whether the benefit is a gift card, bill credit, time-based price difference, or per-event payment for energy. Confirm how it is calculated, when it is paid, how often events occur, and what charging costs you still pay.
- Battery use and control: Check required event participation, remote dispatch, minimum enrollment, battery reserve settings, and whether you can opt out. Make sure the reserve leaves enough range for your regular driving.
- Program fit: Ask about data sharing, conflicts with solar or another rate plan, and any utility, CCA, or aggregator restrictions. Read the current terms rather than assuming separate incentives can be combined.
For many drivers, managed charging is the simpler first step: it can move charging into lower-cost hours without requiring grid export. A V2G setup may make sense when the equipment and program already fit your home and driving needs, but advertised annual earnings should not be treated as guaranteed income.
