A three-year-old boy died after falling from a moving car and being run over in Dayton, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, on 31 July 2024. A nearby resident later told PerthNow she heard a woman scream at the scene; the report does not say she witnessed the fall.
Where and when the crash happened
PerthNow reported that the crash occurred at about 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday, 31 July 2024, on Arthur Street near Grandis Road in Dayton, Western Australia—not Dayton, Ohio. The report said a white Kia station wagon was travelling north on Arthur Street.
What happened to the child
According to the PerthNow report, the boy was three years old and a rear passenger. He fell from the moving Kia near Grandis Road and was run over by the vehicle. He was taken to a nearby home, where paramedics and police attended. The report said he had critical injuries and died a short time later.
The report attributed the detail that the boy’s mother was driving to what The West Australian understood. It did not present that as a separately confirmed police finding.

What the witness said she heard
Nearby resident Sinikiwe Dumba told PerthNow that she first heard emergency sirens and then, after arriving vehicles and roadblocks drew people to the area, heard a woman scream. “At the corner opposite the park, there were many civilians and police there and I heard a woman scream out of agony and I knew something was wrong,” she said.
Dumba’s account describes what she heard and saw at the scene after emergency services arrived. PerthNow did not report that she saw the boy fall from the car. The report also quoted resident Carmela Filardo describing the incident as terrible and saying she makes sure her grandchildren wear seatbelts; that was her personal comment, not an account of the crash.

What authorities were doing when the report was published
PerthNow said CCTV showed the Kia travelling north on Arthur Street and that Major Crash investigators were examining the scene. Police were reported to be door-knocking nearby homes the following morning and asking witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers. Those were updates at the time of publication, not confirmation of the investigation’s eventual findings.
The report did not establish why the child fell, what child-restraint configuration was in the vehicle, or whether a restraint was used. It also did not establish fault or intent. PerthNow quoted Premier Roger Cook expressing sympathy and urging care around vehicles and seatbelt use, but those remarks do not answer the unanswered questions about this specific crash.
