David Coulthard survived a Learjet 35 crash near Lyon on 2 May 2000 after the charter flight carrying him from Farnborough to Nice diverted following an engine problem. Coulthard, his then-fiancée Heidi Wichlinski and trainer Andy Matthews escaped the burning wreckage; pilots David Saunders and Dan Worley died. Coulthard described the escape in a prepared statement, while the Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Archives (BAAA) later summarized the probable cause as a loss of yaw and roll control during the approach.

What happened to David Coulthard’s plane?

The chartered Learjet 35 departed Farnborough, England, bound for Nice, France, with five people aboard: Formula One driver David Coulthard, his then-fiancée Heidi Wichlinski, trainer Andy Matthews, pilot David Saunders and copilot Dan Worley. During cruise, the crew reported an engine problem and diverted to Lyon for an emergency landing. The BAAA archive says the left engine failed and the aircraft crashed and caught fire during its approach to Lyon. BAAA’s accident record dates the crash to 2 May 2000.

The two pilots died. The three passengers—Coulthard, Wichlinski and Matthews—survived. The archive records two crew fatalities, three passengers aboard, no passenger fatalities and two deaths in total.

How did Coulthard and the other passengers escape?

In his prepared statement, Coulthard said a wing fuel tank ruptured on impact and fire broke out on the aircraft’s right side. When the jet stopped, the front of the cockpit had separated from the main fuselage. Matthews led the way through debris, Coulthard followed and helped Wichlinski out. Coulthard then went back toward the wreckage to see whether he could help the pilots, but said there was nothing he could do. He said emergency services arrived in less than a minute and thanked the French responders. Autosport reproduced Coulthard’s statement; an Atlas F1 page reproducing a Reuters report also recounts the escape.

The passengers were taken to hospital and discharged in under two hours with light cuts and bruises, according to a contemporaneous account by L’Orient-Le Jour. Coulthard should not be described as completely uninjured: reports mention cuts and bruises, and a later retrospective says he had a broken rib, though it does not cite a medical record.

What did Coulthard say after the crash?

At a press briefing on 4 May 2000, Coulthard expressed sympathy for the pilots’ families and praised the crew: “I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies for the families of the two pilots. They behaved with the utmost professionalism throughout the incident.” The quotation is from his prepared statement as reproduced by Autosport. He also said he would not comment further or speculate about the cause; this article does not rely on a cleaned-up version of that sentence, whose wording in the transcript is awkward.

What does the accident record say caused the crash?

The BAAA archive’s summary of the probable cause says the aircraft lost control of yaw and then roll. It says this apparently happened because flight symmetry was not monitored when thrust was increased on the right engine after the left-engine failure. The archive also identifies the captain’s haste and difficulty coping with stress after the failure as contributing factors. This is the archive’s summary, not a finding independently checked here against the final report linked from its page.

Coulthard’s statement is an eyewitness account of the impact, fire and escape; it is not a technical accident analysis. The BAAA entry provides the technical sequence and its probable-cause summary. Keeping those accounts distinct avoids treating a passenger’s description of what happened inside and around the wreckage as an investigation finding.

How Coulthard later reflected on the crash

A 2024 PlanetF1 retrospective, relaying remarks attributed to a Telegraph interview, reported that Coulthard later wished he had taken the aircraft booked for later rather than trying to travel immediately. The article quoted him describing the decision as “born out of being spoiled” and saying there had been no need to rush. PlanetF1 also reproduced an earlier F1 Racing remark in which Coulthard said the crash had affected every aspect of his life. These are retrospective comments relayed by PlanetF1, not a directly reviewed interview transcript.
