Daniel Ricciardo described the Christian Horner controversy as “noise and distractions” and said he hoped it would go away, drawing criticism in coverage of the March 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend. The comments came after Red Bull said it had dismissed a workplace complaint against Horner and as separate, unverified messages were circulating.
What did Daniel Ricciardo say?
On March 8, 2024, Ricciardo—then a driver for Visa Cash App RB—spoke to television networks on the opening day of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. PerthNow reproduced his remarks: “Right now there is a lot of noise and distractions, there’s no doubt,” he said, adding, “So, yeah, hopefully these things start to slowly go away, and they can just focus on being a race team.” (PerthNow)
His framing focused on the disruption to the team and the hope that attention would shift back to racing. The quoted words do not establish that he was defending Horner or taking a position on the complaint. The original broadcast or transcript was not independently reviewed; these quotations are as reproduced by PerthNow.
Why was his response criticised?
PerthNow reported that Ricciardo’s comments prompted outrage and raised eyebrows, describing him as “under fire.” That supports saying his response drew criticism in contemporary coverage, but it does not show how many people objected or whether those critics represented F1 fans generally. The reviewed reporting provides no verified count or representative audience data.

What was happening with the Horner complaint?
Red Bull said its internal investigation into a complaint of inappropriate behaviour against team principal Christian Horner was complete and that the complaint had been dismissed. Horner denied the allegations. Red Bull said the investigation report was confidential. (BBC Sport; source report)
PerthNow reported at the time that the complainant had not appealed the outcome and that no criminal allegations had been made. Those are details from its March 8, 2024 coverage, not a current check of legal status. (PerthNow)

How did the alleged messages fit in?
A separate strand of the controversy involved an anonymous email sent to F1 personnel and media, containing a link to messages that purported to involve Horner. BBC Sport described the messages as alleged; the reporting cited here does not establish their authenticity. Horner said, “I won’t comment on anonymous speculation,” and reiterated that he had always denied the allegations. (BBC Sport)
The complaint and Red Bull’s investigation outcome should not be conflated with the separate circulation of alleged messages. Nor should Ricciardo’s remarks be treated as confirmation of those messages or as evidence of his view of their authenticity.

What can be concluded about the reaction?
The defensible conclusion is limited: Ricciardo’s comments were reported as drawing criticism, but the available coverage does not quantify that response or establish that it reflected the broader fanbase. The messages’ authenticity is likewise not established in the cited reporting.
