Operated by Delaware corporation DC Motors Corp., the company is targeting a $500,000-plus electric ultra-luxury vehicle for first deliveries in 2028. Its pitch is unusually specific: a handcrafted American car with 1930s Streamline Moderne styling, extensive customization, and a cabin designed to be reconfigured throughout the vehicle’s life.
That is why Dacora is being compared with Duesenberg. The comparison works as a description of the ambition—American engineering, coachbuilt individuality, extreme pricing, and very low production volumes. It does not yet establish that Dacora has matched Duesenberg’s engineering record, racing pedigree, manufacturing history, or reputation. As of August 10, 2026, Dacora is best understood as a pre-production company selling a compelling vision while still needing to prove its engineering, certification, manufacturing, financing, and customer-support plans.
What is Dacora Motors?
Dacora Motors was founded by MIT-trained engineers Kristie D’Ambrosio-Correll and Eric D’Ambrosio-Correll. Kristie is the company’s chief executive officer and Eric is its chief technology officer, according to Dacora’s company profile and its launch materials.
Kristie D’Ambrosio-Correll previously served as chief technology officer of MIRROR, the connected-fitness company acquired by lululemon for approximately $500 million. Dacora highlights that experience in its investor materials, though experience in connected consumer products is not the same as a demonstrated record of bringing a federally certified automobile into production.

The company is presenting itself as a Hudson Valley-based American luxury-car maker. Its stated plan involves a 100-acre Hudson Valley Garage combining design, production, accommodations, and customer experiences. That facility is still described as a planned or developing part of the business; there is no public evidence in the material reviewed for this article that it had opened as an operating vehicle-production plant by August 10, 2026.
LinkedIn categorizes Dacora as a privately held motor-vehicle-manufacturing company with a stated size of 2–10 employees. That figure is not an audited headcount—it is a platform category—but it illustrates the scale of the publicly visible organization compared with the demands of developing and supporting a new automobile. Dacora’s legal documents identify its operating entity as DC Motors Corp., a Delaware corporation; the company name and the vehicle brand are therefore not identical legal entities. See the company’s privacy policy and LinkedIn listing.
The Dacora 001 is the product
The company’s reservation agreement gives the car its formal name: Dacora 001. Public coverage has also called it the Dacora, Dacora EV, Dacora sedan, or Dacora luxury car. Because the company’s own materials generally use broader terms such as vehicle or car, and because outside descriptions differ on whether it is a sedan or hatchback, Dacora 001 is the safest designation.
Its design is deliberately theatrical. The exterior draws on 1930s Streamline Moderne, with a long hood, large sculptural fenders, a fastback-like rear treatment, and a stance intended to recall the grand American cars of the prewar period. One of the most conspicuous details is a hand-crafted wood hood, which Dacora describes as a modern reference to American woodie vehicles.

Dacora says the vehicle was designed in collaboration with the Pininfarina Group. That is an important design association, but it should not be inflated into a claim that Pininfarina engineered the entire vehicle, will manufacture it, or that Automobili Pininfarina is a powertrain or production partner. The public material establishes a design collaboration; it does not define the full division of engineering and manufacturing responsibility. Car Design News’ design report and Dacora’s launch release are the relevant sources.
Why people are calling it a modern Duesenberg
The useful historical comparison is not simply that both cars have long hoods or old-fashioned styling. It is that both propositions are built around the idea of an American alternative to established European luxury marques, combining advanced engineering with individualized coachwork and extreme scarcity.
Duesenberg’s Model J debuted in 1928. Its 420-cubic-inch straight-eight used dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, producing 265 horsepower—an extraordinary output for the time. Duesenberg sold a chassis that could be completed by independent coachbuilders, allowing wealthy buyers to commission highly individualized bodies and interiors. The Revs Institute and Indianapolis Automotive Museum document both the Model J’s engineering and its coachbuilt business model.
The economics were as exclusive as the technology. A Library of Congress historic survey records a Model J chassis price of $8,300, with custom coachwork potentially adding as much as $20,000. That was a staggering proposition in the period: the customer was not merely buying transportation but commissioning a technically exceptional American object around a personal specification. The relevant Library of Congress survey provides the historical pricing and production context.
Dacora’s parallel is easy to see:
| Duesenberg Model J | Dacora 001 |
|---|---|
| Race-derived engineering and a technically advanced straight-eight | Electric propulsion with more than 800 horsepower claimed by the company |
| Bare chassis completed through independent coachbuilding | Highly configurable cabin with modular seating and console systems |
| Very low-volume luxury production | Planned limited production, beginning with a reported 50 cars |
| An American prestige alternative to European marques | An intended American alternative to Rolls-Royce and Bentley |
| Expensive, individualized ownership | A $500,000-plus bespoke ownership model |
But the difference is decisive. Duesenberg had a demonstrated engineering and competition record before and during its luxury-car era. Dacora has shown design work and a physical vehicle or prototype, announced intentions, reservations, and projections. It has not yet established a record of certified production or customer deliveries. “The Duesenberg of the modern era” is therefore an editorial analogy and an aspiration—not a heritage relationship, licensing arrangement, or proven equivalence.
What Dacora says the car will do
Dacora’s current public figures describe a very large, powerful luxury vehicle rather than an efficiency-focused EV. The following are company-provided figures or reported targets, not independent test results:
| Item | Dacora’s published or reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $500,000 | Company target; options and bespoke work could change the final price |
| Power | More than 800 horsepower | Company claim or projection; no independent test result was publicly available |
| Estimated range | 400 miles | Company estimate, not an EPA result |
| Claimed curb weight | 6,500 pounds | Figure published on Dacora’s About page |
| Rear legroom | 45 inches | Company-published interior target or specification |
| Cargo volume | 25 cubic feet | Company-published figure |
| Ground clearance | 7.5 inches | Figure published on Dacora’s current About page |
| First deliveries | Targeted for 2028 | Planned timing, not a delivery record |
| First-year production | 50 vehicles | Production plan reported by MotorTrend |
| Reservations | More than 80 | Dacora investor-material claim |
| Presale revenue commitments | More than $40 million | Dacora investor-material claim; definition and collection status are not publicly documented |
| Production certification | Not publicly established | No public evidence reviewed here confirms completed federal certification |
Dacora’s launch release, the current About page, and MotorTrend’s report are the sources for these figures.
MotorTrend also reported that Dacora had discussed a sub-four-second 0–60-mph target. The company’s launch release says a hybrid powertrain may be available upon request, but gives no battery, engine, transmission, emissions, or performance details. There is no public confirmation of battery capacity, charging voltage, charging time, motor supplier, drivetrain layout, battery chemistry, EPA range, top speed, towing capacity, crash-test results, or production-intent homologation status.

- Home collection car model, gift selection.
- The door, hood & trunk can be opened with sound & light.
- Zinc alloy, ABS plastic parts, rubber tires.
- SUV car model 1:32 scale.
- Size approx 16.5cm *6.5cm*7cm, weight approx 380g.
That missing information matters. A 6,500-pound vehicle targeting 400 miles of range and more than 800 horsepower would require a substantial, carefully integrated energy-storage and thermal-management system. Without a disclosed battery size, aerodynamic data, tire specification, charging performance, or validated test results, the range and acceleration claims cannot be meaningfully assessed from public information.
A cabin designed to change after delivery
Dacora’s strongest product idea may be the interior rather than the powertrain. The company is not selling customization only as a choice of paint, leather, and trim. It describes a vehicle intended to be repeatedly reconfigured after the customer takes delivery.
Publicly described interior features include:
- A wood dashboard with physical dials and switches.
- A digital display that can disappear behind or into the woodwork.
- Hardwood, woven wool, leather, and other natural or bio-based materials.
- Modular seating configurations.
- Replaceable upholstery collections that Dacora says it intends to release twice a year.
- Configurable center-console modules, including concepts such as a food-and-beverage station, desk, wardrobe, bonsai garden, humidor, or record player.
- A floor system intended to adjust the driving position.
- The option for owners to supply personal wood for use in the interior.
Car Design News reported that seating and upholstery could be changed after delivery and described the modular cabin concept in detail. This is closer to a long-term commissioning relationship than to a conventional luxury-car configurator.
Dacora’s “no plastic” language needs a narrow reading. The company is primarily describing an effort to eliminate plastic from much of the cabin, not promising that the entire automobile contains no plastic. A modern EV normally uses polymers, adhesives, insulation, wiring, seals, coatings, battery materials, and electronic components. Until Dacora publishes a complete materials specification, the accurate description is that it says it is reducing or eliminating plastic from significant portions of the interior.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The concept also creates engineering and ownership questions. Removable modules can make a car more personal and more useful, but they must remain secure, quiet, weather-resistant, electrically reliable, and compatible with airbags, seat belts, sensors, and crash structures. If a center console or seat system changes, the company must preserve safety-system integrity—not merely the visual appearance of the cabin.
Handcrafted production and the planned customer experience
Dacora says each vehicle will be handcrafted with American-sourced components at a Hudson Valley design atelier and garage. It also describes a concierge sales process in which customers make appointments and work with a personal advisor on the specification. The intended experience is closer to commissioning a coachbuilt object or staying at a luxury hospitality property than visiting a conventional dealership.
That positioning fits the product. A $500,000 car with bespoke woodwork, modular furniture-like components, and individually selected materials cannot be sold and supported exactly like a mass-market EV. But handcrafting solves only one part of the problem. The company would still need repeatable structural production, validated electrical systems, quality control, parts logistics, software support, warranty administration, and trained service technicians.
“American-sourced components” also requires definition. It could refer to final assembly, a majority of the supply chain, or a narrower selection of visible materials. The public material does not establish the domestic origin of the battery pack, motors, inverters, suspension, brakes, glass, crash structures, electronics, or other major systems.
Is Dacora selling a car yet?
Not in the ordinary sense. Dacora’s website includes both a waitlist process and a formal reservation agreement, and those documents distinguish interest or reservation activity from a completed vehicle purchase.
The $50,000 reservation
The Dacora 001 reservation agreement calls for a $50,000 deposit. It says the deposit is refundable subject to the conditions in the agreement and explicitly states that the reservation is not a vehicle purchase agreement. The deposit may later be credited toward costs associated with building the vehicle under a subsequent purchase agreement.
The agreement also includes mandatory individual arbitration and a class-action waiver. Anyone considering a reservation should read the operative document rather than relying on headlines about a $50,000 deposit.
The waitlist letter of intent
The current waitlist form uses a separate, non-binding letter of intent. It says a prospective buyer indicates an intention to provide a 10% deposit to secure a production position before the end of 2026, while stating that payment timing, payment method, and refundability will be addressed in a future purchase contract.

- Accessories and collections: This product is very suitable for static accessories and can be used as an accessory next to a computer. For those who are passionate about collecting model car models, this is a great art collection.
These are not interchangeable concepts:
- Waitlist: an expression of interest or preliminary request for a place in line.
- Non-binding letter of intent: an indication of intended future action, not necessarily an enforceable order for a car.
- Reservation deposit: money paid under specific contractual terms, but still not necessarily a vehicle sale.
- Purchase agreement: the later contract that would govern the actual vehicle, specification, price, delivery, cancellation, and warranty obligations.
- Presale commitment: a company-reported commercial-interest figure that is not automatically collected cash or recognized revenue.
Accordingly, “Dacora has taken reservations” should not be rewritten as “Dacora has accepted binding orders for completed cars.”
What the investor materials claim
Dacora’s Founding Owner Deal Room claims more than 80 presale reservations, more than $40 million in presale revenue commitments, and reservations equal to 150% of planned first-year production. It also lists $2 million in projected 2025 revenue, multiple patent filings, and a leadership team with experience at Lamborghini, Audi, and Chanel.
Those numbers should be attributed to Dacora. The public page does not provide a customer list, signed purchase contracts, a deposit ledger, audited revenue, patent numbers, or a detailed definition of “presale revenue commitment.” The phrase may describe expressed purchase commitments rather than recognized revenue. A reservation is evidence of interest; it is not proof that a customer has paid the full price or that the company has delivered a vehicle.
The same investor page solicits a $5 million pre-Series A round. It states that $4 million remains available, sets a $1 million minimum investment, and describes a SAFE converting at a 10% discount with no valuation cap. That is an active fundraising solicitation as presented, not evidence that the full round has closed.
Axios previously reported that Dacora was seeking $10 million to $30 million in Series A financing. No public source reviewed for this article confirms that the larger Series A closed. Dacora does identify Female Founders Fund as an investor, and Halogen Ventures has publicly described Dacora as part of its portfolio; those facts indicate investor support, but they do not answer how much capital the company has raised or whether it has enough funding to complete production.
The production plan is ambitious
MotorTrend reported a proposed ramp of 50 cars in the first year, with deliveries targeted for late 2028, followed by 100 cars in 2029 and an eventual goal of 5,000 vehicles annually by the mid-2030s.
A 50-car first year is compatible with a hand-built, extremely low-volume launch in principle. The difficult question is what happens next. Moving from 50 vehicles to 5,000 annually is not a modest increase; it requires a fundamentally different manufacturing system, supply chain, workforce, quality process, and service network.
Important unanswered questions include:
- Where exactly will final assembly take place?
- Has Dacora acquired or leased the intended Hudson Valley site?
- Who will manufacture the battery pack, motors, inverters, suspension, brakes, glass, and crash structures?
- Which components are genuinely American-sourced?
- Is Dacora developing its own platform, or adapting a donor platform?
- Will it certify the car as a complete manufacturer or use a contract manufacturer?
- What annual capacity is the Hudson Valley facility designed to support?
- How will a publicly visible company in the 2–10-employee category perform vehicle engineering, validation, service, warranty, and recall work?
- What contractual and financial protections will customers receive if the 2028 target slips?
- Can a vehicle priced from $500,000 remain economically viable if the initial run is only 50 units?
These are not arguments that the program is impossible. Low-volume automotive manufacturing exists, and wealthy customers will pay for scarcity and craftsmanship. They are the practical tests that separate a design exercise from a functioning automaker.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe regulatory path is not optional
Dacora’s projected production volume does not automatically exempt it from federal safety requirements. NHTSA defines a low-volume manufacturer as one producing no more than 5,000 motor vehicles worldwide annually, but the special replica-vehicle provisions are separate and apply to vehicles that replicate designs at least 25 years old.
A new Dacora design inspired by 1930s cars should not casually be described as qualifying for the replica exemption. Its Streamline Moderne influence does not, by itself, make it a replica of a specific historic vehicle. The NHTSA replica-vehicle document and the Federal Register explanation distinguish the low-volume framework from the replica provisions.
Before normal customer deliveries, observers should look for evidence of:
- NHTSA manufacturer registration.
- A World Manufacturer Identifier and VIN activity in NHTSA’s Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing.
- Certification against applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
- Battery and high-voltage electrical-system compliance.
- EPA certification for any hybrid version and applicable California Air Resources Board compliance if the vehicle is sold in California.
- Defect-reporting, recall, warranty, and service procedures.
- Insurance, financing, and state-registration readiness.
NHTSA’s vehicle-manufacturer portal explains manufacturers’ obligations to submit information related to safety issues and recalls. Low volume may reduce scale; it does not eliminate safety, certification, labeling, VIN, defect, recall, and consumer-protection responsibilities.

Five ways to judge whether Dacora is credible
1. Product distinctiveness
Dacora has a clear identity. It is not another anonymous electric crossover, and its modular interior is more ambitious than ordinary color-and-trim personalization. The Duesenberg analogy makes sense at the level of bespoke American luxury.
The same choices create risks. A wood hood, side steps, elaborate fenders, and a large body may complicate aerodynamics, pedestrian safety, weather resistance, repairability, and long-term durability. A cabin assembled from interchangeable modules could introduce rattles, water ingress, electrical faults, and costly replacement parts if the interfaces are not engineered carefully.
2. Engineering credibility
The founders’ engineering backgrounds, prior consumer-product experience, and Pininfarina design collaboration are positive signals. They show that the project is more than an anonymous rendering posted online.
Still missing publicly are a battery or motor supplier, platform architecture, independent range or acceleration testing, crash-test results, production-intent validation, and a clear prototype-development schedule. Design credibility is not the same as vehicle-engineering credibility.

The planned Hudson Valley operation, claimed demand above initial production, and low first-year volume are all consistent with a boutique launch. But hand assembly does not remove the need for tooling, repeatability, supplier contracts, certification testing, parts stocking, software support, warranty reserves, and quality control.
A luxury customer spending $500,000 expects factory-level reliability and long-term support—not merely a beautiful prototype. Dacora will need to demonstrate that its proposed atelier can build multiple vehicles with consistent fit, finish, electrical performance, and safety-system behavior.
4. Financial durability
Automotive startups spend heavily long before they generate meaningful vehicle revenue. Battery and powertrain development, crash testing, certification, tooling, inventory, service infrastructure, insurance, and warranty support all consume capital.
The publicly presented $5 million pre-Series A solicitation may be useful development capital, but it appears small relative to the full cost of completing, certifying, and supporting a new car. Reported reservation commitments are encouraging demand signals, yet they are not necessarily collected, non-refundable deposits or recognized revenue. Without public audited financial statements, outsiders cannot determine the company’s runway or production economics.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
5. The customer proposition
Dacora’s best argument is that it could occupy a space between a Rolls-Royce commission and an aftermarket custom shop: a vehicle designed around the customer and intended to evolve over time.
To make that proposition durable, Dacora would need to keep replacement upholstery available for decades, maintain hidden displays and software, preserve safety-system integrity after interior changes, supply parts outside New York, train technicians, and support battery replacement as the original pack ages. Resale value may also be complicated by the fact that every vehicle could be configured differently.
What leading coverage gets wrong
The most common problem is treating a company projection as a production specification. “800 horsepower” and “400 miles” should be written as targets or estimates until independent testing or regulatory data exists.
The second is blurring the difference between a rendering, a show vehicle, an engineering prototype, a production-intent prototype, a certified production vehicle, and a customer-delivered automobile. Dacora has shown a vehicle and discussed production, but the public record reviewed here does not establish that the displayed car is a fully validated production-intent vehicle.

Third, Dacora’s “first” claims need attribution. The company and its investors describe it as the first female-founded and led automotive brand in history and the first American ultra-luxury vehicle brand in nearly a century. Those statements depend on how terms such as automotive brand, ultra-luxury, American-made, and production vehicle are defined. They should be written as “Dacora describes itself as…”, not as independently settled historical facts.
Fourth, MotorTrend mentioned the possibility of a GM Ultium platform, but that was speculation rather than a confirmed Dacora or GM announcement. No platform, GM motor, or other supplier should be stated as fact without direct confirmation.
Finally, the Duesenberg label should not be treated as a branding fact. Dacora is not reviving Duesenberg, licensing the name, or using a Duesenberg platform. The phrase describes shared themes: American prestige, engineering ambition, bespoke coachwork, and scarcity.
What evidence would change the assessment?
Dacora’s credibility will become much easier to judge when it publishes or demonstrates the following:
- A production-intent prototype with disclosed battery, motor, platform, and supplier information.
- Independent acceleration, range, charging, thermal, and durability testing.
- A documented manufacturing site and identified final-assembly partner or workforce.
- NHTSA manufacturer and VIN information, along with evidence of applicable certification work.
- EPA and CARB details for the proposed hybrid version where applicable.
- Signed purchase agreements and a clear distinction between committed deposits, refundable reservations, and investor-reported commitments.
- A funded service, warranty, parts, software, and battery-support program.
- Actual customer deliveries that can be inspected, driven, and supported after sale.
Those milestones matter more than another rendering, a new celebrity reservation, or a larger headline power figure.
Bottom line: an unusually coherent idea, not yet an established automaker
Dacora has a stronger and more distinctive proposition than many automotive startups. The Dacora 001 has a recognizable design language, a clear luxury audience, and a meaningful attempt to reinterpret coachbuilding for the electric era. Its founders have relevant technical and consumer-product backgrounds, and its Pininfarina design collaboration gives the project additional substance.
But the company remains pre-production as of August 10, 2026. Its performance figures, production timing, reservation totals, presale commitments, American-sourcing claims, and future facility are company claims or plans. The public record does not yet establish completed federal certification, independently verified performance, regular production, customer deliveries, or a confirmed closing of the larger Series A previously reported by Axios.
Dacora may eventually deserve to be called a modern American coachbuilder—or even a modern Duesenberg in the broader cultural sense. It will earn that comparison only by building a certified, independently tested, serviceable vehicle in real numbers and delivering it to real customers.

Is the Dacora 001 a production car?
Not yet. As of August 10, 2026, Dacora is a pre-production startup. It has shown a vehicle, published targets, and offered reservations, but the public material reviewed here does not establish regular production, federal certification, or customer deliveries.
How much does a Dacora 001 reservation cost?
Dacora’s reservation agreement calls for a $50,000 deposit. The agreement says the deposit is refundable subject to its conditions and that the reservation is not a vehicle purchase agreement. A separate waitlist letter of intent discusses an intended 10% deposit, with payment and refund terms deferred to a future purchase contract.
Is Pininfarina building the Dacora 001?
The public information establishes that Dacora says the vehicle was designed in collaboration with the Pininfarina Group. It does not establish that Pininfarina engineered the entire car, will manufacture it, or that Automobili Pininfarina is a production or powertrain partner.
Is Dacora legally exempt from normal vehicle safety rules because it plans low production?
Low-volume production does not automatically remove federal safety, certification, VIN, labeling, defect, recall, or consumer-protection obligations. The separate replica-vehicle provisions apply to qualifying replicas of designs at least 25 years old; inspiration from 1930s styling alone does not prove that the Dacora 001 qualifies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
The short version: Dacora is a legitimate, unusually focused attempt to create a $500,000 American electric coachbuilt car, not a delivered modern Duesenberg. The concept and customer proposition are real; the engineering, certification, production, funding, and support case remains unproven. The decisive test will be a certified vehicle that can be independently tested, built consistently, serviced, and delivered.
