The aircraft has six CycloRotors, a propulsion system designed to direct thrust around a full 360-degree path. BlackBird is a technology demonstrator—not a certified passenger aircraft or production flying car.
When did the CycloRotor eVTOL prototype first fly?
BlackBird flew on 27 March 2025. CycloTech, based in Linz, Austria, announced the milestone a week later and said the aircraft went from concept to maiden flight in 11 months. Aviation Week also reported the flight date and identified BlackBird as a CycloTech electric VTOL demonstrator.
CycloTech described BlackBird as its first aircraft configuration to use six CycloRotors, all seventh-generation units. The milestone demonstrates an aircraft in flight; it does not establish certification, commercial readiness, or passenger service.
What is BlackBird?
BlackBird is a flight demonstrator built by Austrian propulsion company CycloTech to develop its CycloRotor system. It follows earlier company technology demonstrations, including a CycloRotor demonstrator’s first free flight on 5 October 2021. In March 2023, CycloTech said Austria’s civil aviation authority, Austro Control, had authorized outdoor flights with an 85-kilogram demonstrator. That authorization concerned the earlier demonstrator, not certification of BlackBird for passenger operations.

How does CycloRotor propulsion work?
A CycloRotor is a barrel-like rotating assembly with blades whose pitch produces thrust. CycloTech says the system can vary the magnitude and direction of that thrust around a full circle, or 360 degrees. With six units, the company presents BlackBird as capable of vertical takeoff and landing, sideways movement, parallel-parking-style maneuvers, and mid-air braking or deceleration without banking.
These are the system’s stated capabilities and intended advantages. The maiden-flight announcement confirms that BlackBird flew, but does not by itself verify each maneuver or establish comparative performance in areas such as noise, energy use, payload, or range.

What could CycloRotor eVTOLs be used for?
A 2022 feasibility study by CycloTech and Yamato Holdings considered an unmanned cargo eVTOL using CycloRotors. Its stated design targets were a 45-kilogram payload over 40 kilometers and precision landing within a five-meter-diameter area. Those were study parameters, not BlackBird test results or certified aircraft performance.
The study points to cargo delivery as one proposed use, while CycloTech’s 360-degree thrust-vectoring concept is intended to support movement and deceleration in multiple directions. The available flight announcement does not show that BlackBird has carried cargo or completed a commercial mission.

What does the first flight establish—and what remains unproven?
- Established: BlackBird made a maiden flight on 27 March 2025, according to CycloTech and Aviation Week.
- Aircraft configuration: CycloTech says the demonstrator has six seventh-generation CycloRotors.
- Still unestablished: The announcement does not establish passenger certification, production plans, commercial service, or independently verified advantages in efficiency, noise, payload, or range.
- Separate development context: CycloTech reported €20 million raised in 2024 from Breeze Invest and Konos Holding, toward a €53 million financing target. The company said the funding would support development of a full-scale CycloRotor propulsion prototype; these figures are the company’s statements, not evidence of aircraft certification or service entry.
