A Cybertruck owner reportedly said his windshield spidered and shattered while he was cleaning it with a newly washed microfiber cloth. The account does not establish that the cloth caused the damage, and it is not evidence that Cybertruck windshields commonly break this way.
What the owner reported
In a report published September 21, 2024, Torque News attributed this account to Addam, a Cybertruck owner: “While cleaning the windshield with a brand new freshly washed microfiber cloth, the windshield spidered and shattered.” Torque News
That is an individual account, not an independently verified explanation of how the glass failed. The report does not establish whether the cloth, an existing flaw, an impact, or another factor contributed. The available information also does not establish how often Cybertruck windshields break during cleaning; no rate should be inferred from this incident.

Use an appropriate cleaner

Keep microfiber cloths free of debris
Tesla’s exterior-cleaning guidance recommends a high-quality microfiber towel and says cloths should be clean of sand, dirt, and rocks. For spot cleaning, it directs owners to use glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Tesla’s inboard-glass service procedure also uses glass cleaner applied to a microfiber towel, followed by a second dry microfiber towel. These instructions make microfiber a normal cleaning tool in Tesla guidance; they do not explain the owner’s reported break or guarantee that any cloth or cleaner can prevent glass damage.

Take care when raising the wiper arm
Tesla advises checking the wiper rubber and placing a towel between the wiper arm and windshield when lifting the arm, to help avoid scratching or cracking the glass. Follow the manual’s procedure rather than letting the arm rest against the windshield. Cybertruck Owner’s Manual

Do not assume a crack is repairable based on a photograph or its appearance from outside. Tesla’s collision-repair guidance limits the number and size or type of permissible repairs, requires approved windshield and roof-glass repair kits, and says damage to the windshield’s inner layer is not repairable and requires replacement. What this report does—and does not—show
- It shows: Torque News reported one owner’s account of a windshield spidering and shattering while he cleaned it with a newly washed microfiber cloth.
- It does not show: that microfiber caused the break, that the windshield had no prior damage, or that this is a widespread Cybertruck defect.
- For routine care: Tesla’s guidance calls for clean microfiber and appropriate automotive-glass cleaner or washer fluid.
