Cybertruck No Match for the Fury of Hungry Raccoons? What the Minnesota Incident Really Shows

Hungry raccoons reportedly clawed at a Minnesota Cybertruck’s covered bed after detecting food. Here is what the anecdote says—and does not say—about the truck’s durability.

A parked Tesla Cybertruck reportedly became the target of hungry raccoons after food was left in or around its covered cargo bed. That makes for an excellent “Cybertruck versus raccoons” joke—but it does not establish that the truck is raccoon-proof, indestructible, or generally mistaken for a dumpster. It was an anecdotal wildlife encounter, not a controlled durability test.

What reportedly happened

Reports described a Minnesota Cybertruck owner who left the vehicle outdoors while camping or picnicking, with food associated with the truck’s bed. Raccoons then tried to get into the covered cargo area. The reported evidence included paw prints and claw or bite marks around the cover or bed area, while the food remained inaccessible.

The exact owner identity, precise location, number of raccoons, and independently documented repair cost have not been established by the strongest available reporting. The safest description is therefore “a reported Minnesota incident,” rather than a verified test with known conditions.

Why the “dumpster” comparison took off

Internet commentary compared the Cybertruck’s angular, stainless-steel shape to a dumpster and joked that the raccoons had identified it as a promising food source. That is humorous framing, not evidence that raccoons generally confuse Cybertrucks with dumpsters.

Raccoons are opportunistic feeders. A food smell near an unattended vehicle can be enough to trigger investigation, whether the vehicle is a Cybertruck, pickup, SUV, or ordinary sedan. In this case, the animals appear to have attacked the most accessible-looking route to the scent: the covered cargo area.

Did the raccoons defeat the Cybertruck?

Not in any formal sense. The reports describe visible marks or damage around the covered bed area, but there is no independent stress test showing what force the animals applied, which components were damaged, or how much a repair cost. The raccoons also apparently did not get the food.

That distinction matters because “the food stayed secure” and “the vehicle is animal-proof” are completely different claims. The first is consistent with the reported anecdote. The second is unsupported.

Stainless steel does not mean scratch-proof

Tesla markets the Cybertruck’s stainless-steel exterior as more resistant to dents and dings than many conventional vehicle exteriors. That does not mean every part of the truck has the same resistance, or that the body is immune to scratches and other damage.

The Cybertruck’s exterior has no clear coat, according to Tesla’s owner guidance. Scratches therefore occur in the stainless-steel panels themselves rather than in a sacrificial layer of clear paint. A panel may resist some dents while still showing scratches, discoloration, gouges, or scuffing.

More importantly for this story, a Cybertruck is not just a collection of stainless-steel panels. The covered bed includes a cover and associated hardware, seals, trim, edges, and other attached or non-panel components. Those parts should not be treated as equivalent to the truck’s main body structure.

Even stainless-steel repairs can affect appearance

Tesla’s collision-repair documentation describes refinishing procedures for exterior stainless-steel panels that can involve sanding with a random orbital sander. Tesla also warns that a repair may change the appearance of the affected area.

A small mark is not necessarily a simple paint touch-up. Maintaining a consistent appearance may require refinishing an entire plane or related panels, depending on the damage and repair method. That is another reason not to assume that a few reported claw marks were either harmless or enormously expensive without an inspection and repair estimate.

What Cybertruck owners should do around raccoons

  1. Remove food before leaving the vehicle unattended. Do not store meals, snacks, trash, pet food, coolers, or food-soiled packaging in or beside the truck when camping or picnicking.
  2. Use sealed wildlife-resistant food storage. A properly closed wildlife-resistant camping food container is a more relevant preventive measure than relying on the vehicle’s body panels or bed cover. “Wildlife-resistant” should not automatically be read as “raccoon-proof” unless the specific product has credible testing or an applicable certification.
  3. Inspect the vehicle before driving. Check the bed cover, edges, seals, trim, cameras, lights, and surrounding panels for claw marks, displaced parts, contamination, or anything trapped in a gap.
  4. Clean contamination promptly. Grease, food residue, bird droppings, insects, tree resin, tar, road salt, and other substances can damage or discolor surfaces if left in place.
  5. Use gentle cleaning methods. Tesla recommends flushing away loose grit, hand-washing with mild pH-neutral soap and a soft sponge, rinsing thoroughly, and drying with clean microfiber cloths. Avoid unsuitable chemicals or abrasive tools that can damage plastic trim, lights, and camera lenses.
  6. Document damage before attempting a repair. Take clear photographs and obtain professional advice if a mark has cut into a panel, damaged a seal, affected the cover mechanism, or changed the appearance of the stainless steel.

Would a Cybertruck cover have prevented the attack?

Tesla recommends using a genuine cover when the Cybertruck is not in use. The company’s official Cybertruck car cover is described as a double-layer outdoor cover with water-resistant and flame-retardant properties, reinforced corners, ventilation, and access openings.

That makes a cover relevant for reducing exposure to weather and routine outdoor grime. It does not make the truck raccoon-proof or protect food stored inside the bed. The available information does not establish that Tesla’s cover has been tested as an animal deterrent, bite-resistant barrier, or wildlife-storage solution. Removing food remains the more important step.

What the incident actually proves

The raccoon episode demonstrates three fairly ordinary things:

  • Food odors can attract wildlife to an unattended vehicle.
  • A covered cargo area can become the focus of an animal’s attempt to reach that food.
  • Visible marks can occur around a Cybertruck’s cover or attached components even when its stainless-steel body is marketed as dent-resistant.

It does not prove that the Cybertruck is unusually weak, unusually strong, or universally attractive to raccoons. Nor does it turn Tesla’s comparative durability claims into a guarantee against scratches, trim damage, seal damage, or animal attacks.

The simplest explanation is also the most defensible: hungry raccoons detected a possible food source, tried to reach it, left marks around the covered bed, and apparently went away without the meal. The truck survived an amusing wildlife encounter—but the raccoons did not conduct a meaningful test of its overall durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Cybertruck raccoon-proof?

No. Reports describe one Minnesota owner-reported incident in which raccoons apparently tried to reach food and left marks around the covered bed. It was not a controlled test, and it does not establish general animal resistance.

Can raccoons scratch or damage a Cybertruck?

Tesla says the Cybertruck’s stainless-steel exterior is more resistant to some dents and dings, but the exterior can still be scratched. The bed cover, seals, trim, cameras, lights, and other attached components have their own vulnerabilities.

How can Cybertruck owners prevent raccoon damage while camping?

Remove food, trash, coolers, and food-soiled packaging from the unattended vehicle. Store food in a properly sealed wildlife-resistant container, inspect the truck before driving, and clean contamination using Tesla’s recommended gentle methods.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Minnesota Cybertruck story is a funny, reportedly food-motivated wildlife encounter—not proof that the truck is raccoon-proof or indestructible. Remove food from unattended vehicles, store it in a properly sealed wildlife-resistant container, and treat the Cybertruck’s cover, trim, seals, and stainless-steel panels as separate parts with different vulnerabilities.
