Neither Cummins nor Duramax is the universal best choice. For the cited 2025 heavy-duty pickups, the Duramax 6.6L V8 is rated at 470 hp, while the Cummins 6.7L high-output inline-six is rated at 1,075 lb-ft of torque. Those headline figures describe different strengths—not a complete real-world towing comparison. Choose the truck configuration that fits your trailer, payload, transmission preference, service access, and model year.

These are manufacturer-published specifications for specific 2025 applications, not independent comparative test results.

On these published ratings, the Duramax has a 40-hp advantage and the Cummins high-output has a 100-lb-ft torque advantage. That does not establish which truck accelerates faster with a particular trailer, feels stronger on a grade, or is more suitable for a specific job. Engine output is only one part of a complete powertrain and vehicle.
Which is better for towing?
The right choice depends first on the exact trailer and truck configuration. Chevrolet advertises up to 36,000 lb of trailering for properly equipped 2025 Silverado HD configurations; that is a maximum for qualifying configurations, not a capacity that applies to every Silverado HD. Ram likewise publishes configuration-specific towing information.

Cab, bed, axle, drivetrain, wheels, hitch, and installed equipment affect a truck’s rating. Payload matters too: passengers, cargo, options, accessories, and trailer tongue or fifth-wheel pin weight all count against the truck’s available payload. A truck can be below its advertised maximum tow rating and still exceed its payload limit.
- Identify the trailer’s loaded weight and expected tongue or pin weight.
- Check the exact truck’s door-jamb ratings and the manufacturer’s chart for its model year, cab, bed, axle, drivetrain, and equipment.
- Account for passengers, cargo, accessories, and hitch weight against payload, as well as the applicable trailer and combined-weight limits.
- Compare only configurations that meet your requirements, then consider their transmission, axle ratio, equipment, service access, and condition.
Chevrolet’s trailering guidance notes that a specific vehicle’s capacity can vary and that passengers, cargo, options, and accessories may reduce it. Use the actual truck’s ratings rather than choosing by the biggest number in an advertisement.

How horsepower and torque should affect the choice
Duramax: higher published horsepower
The cited 2025 Silverado HD Duramax is rated at 470 hp. Horsepower is relevant to how an engine sustains work across engine speed, but the rating alone does not predict acceleration or towing performance with a load. Transmission gearing, axle ratio, vehicle configuration, and the way the truck is used matter as well.
Cummins: higher published torque
The cited 2025 Ram high-output Cummins is rated at 1,075 lb-ft. That is more peak torque than the cited Duramax rating, but peak torque by itself does not prove that a truck will tow a given trailer better. Consider the full powertrain and the actual configuration rather than treating one peak figure as a verdict.

Compare the whole powertrain, not only the engine
In the cited 2025 configurations, Chevrolet pairs its 6.6L Duramax V8 with a 10-speed Allison automatic, while Ram’s 2025 guide lists the high-output Cummins with an 8-speed TorqueFlite HD automatic. These are manufacturer-described pairings for the cited applications; verify the transmission and axle ratio on the exact trim you are considering.
The different cylinder layouts—V8 for the cited Duramax and inline-six for the cited Cummins—do not by themselves establish which truck is more durable, economical, or capable. The useful comparison is between complete trucks with the ratings and equipment needed for your work.

Why model year and Cummins output version matter
“Cummins 6.7L” does not identify a single output rating across years and versions. Cummins’ 2021 page lists 370 hp and 850 lb-ft for standard output, and 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft for high output. Its 2025 pickup page lists 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft. Do not apply one year’s rating to another truck or assume every Ram trim has the high-output engine.
Confirm the model year, engine option, and trim before comparing specifications. A used truck should be evaluated using information for that exact vehicle, not a newer truck’s published figure.

Reliability, economy, and ownership costs
The cited official materials do not provide comparable independent real-world fuel-economy results, lifetime maintenance costs, or long-term failure rates for the two 2025 powertrains. They therefore do not establish a reliability, fuel-economy, or lifetime-cost winner. Manufacturer product descriptions and owner anecdotes are not a like-for-like comparative data set.
For a used truck, condition and documented service history are relevant to the individual vehicle. Use that truck’s owner’s manual for fluid specifications, maintenance procedures, and emissions-system requirements. Cummins lists EPA and CARB certification for its cited 2025 engine; GM’s 2025 Duramax supplement identifies the L5P 6.6L V8 and includes technical data such as DEF tank capacity. Details and requirements can vary by model year, so do not transfer a capacity or service interval from one generation to another.
Both ownership decisions should account for the applicable emissions equipment and its maintenance requirements. For diesel exhaust fluid, follow the specification in the manual for the exact truck rather than assuming one product or requirement fits every year and engine.
