Cummins Recall 67A: Which Ram Diesel Trucks Need the Update?

Recall 67A does not cover every Cummins-powered Ram. Here is how to check your VIN, what the dealer changes, what warranty coverage may apply, and why Cummins’ 2026 cash incentive has expired.

Cummins gave Ram diesel owners a reason to stop postponing Recall 67A: the required update is free at an authorized Ram dealer, and a 2026 promotion temporarily offered eligible owners $500—or $1,000 for some early participants. That offer has expired. Eligibility still depends on the truck’s VIN, not merely its Cummins badge or model year.

Cummins gave Ram diesel owners a strong reason to stop postponing Recall 67A: the required repair is a no-cost software update, and a 2026 promotion temporarily offered eligible owners $500—or, for the first 750 approved claims, $1,000—to complete it. That promotion ended in 2026, however. As of August 13, 2026, owners should not assume the payment is still available.

The recall also does not cover every Cummins-powered Ram. Eligibility depends on the truck’s VIN, production date, equipment, and—in some earlier trucks—the SCR controller configuration. If you own a potentially affected Ram 2500 or 3500, the sensible first step is to check the VIN through Ram/Mopar’s official recall system or ask an authorized Ram dealer.

Why Cummins wants these Ram trucks back at the dealer

On January 10, 2024, the EPA, U.S. Department of Justice, and California authorities announced a settlement with Cummins involving emissions-control software used in certain Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel trucks.

According to the EPA, software in the engine control module could reduce the effectiveness of the selective catalytic reduction, or SCR, system during some normal driving conditions. That could increase nitrogen-oxide emissions. The affected emissions systems use components including diesel exhaust fluid, NOx sensors, the SCR catalyst, and related engine-control strategies to reduce those emissions.

The settlement created a software recall for approximately 630,000 eligible model-year 2013–2019 trucks. The EPA also identified roughly 330,000 additional model-year 2013–2023 vehicles containing previously undisclosed software. Those vehicles did not require this particular recall, which is one reason owners should not treat every Cummins Ram as affected.

The EPA says Cummins, the agency, and California tested the proposed software modification and found that it was capable of meeting applicable standards under the settlement’s testing framework. The remedy is a manufacturer calibration—not an emissions delete, aftermarket tune, hardware replacement, or general diesel repair.

Which Ram diesel trucks may be included?

The EPA’s eligibility pattern for U.S.-sold Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel vehicles is broadly as follows:

Model year General eligibility pattern
2013–2015 Certain trucks equipped with a two-sensor SCR controller are eligible. Other trucks in these model years do not require this recall.
2016–2018 All Cummins-powered Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel vehicles in the covered category are listed as eligible.
2019 Trucks produced on or before October 1, 2019, are eligible. Later-production trucks are listed as not requiring the recall.
2020–2023 The EPA lists these vehicles as containing no software requiring this settlement recall.

This table is only a screening guide. It is not a substitute for a VIN lookup. The Cummins badge, 6.7-liter engine, model year, or a previous owner’s statement cannot establish whether a particular truck has an open campaign. Production date, SCR-controller configuration, prior repairs, and whether the recall was already completed can change the answer.

How to find out whether your truck needs Recall 67A

  1. Locate the 17-character VIN. It is commonly visible at the lower driver-side windshield, on the vehicle paperwork, and on the truck’s registration or insurance documents.
  2. Use Ram/Mopar’s official recall-information system. Enter the complete VIN rather than searching only by model and year.
  3. Contact an authorized Ram dealer if the result is unclear. Ask the service department to check for an open emissions campaign, including the campaign identifiers Recall 67A and, where applicable, VB6-related repair history.
  4. Schedule the recall appointment. Tell the dealer that you are asking about the Cummins emissions software recall, not an aftermarket calibration or a routine diagnostic scan.
  5. Keep the paperwork. Retain the repair order showing completion, the campaign number, the mileage, and any emissions-warranty documentation supplied by the dealer.

If a truck was purchased used, do not assume that an open recall disappeared when ownership changed. Conversely, do not pay for the work before confirming that the VIN has an open campaign and that the dealer is performing the applicable manufacturer remedy.

What the dealer actually changes

The repair is a software reflash of the engine-control system. The dealer uses manufacturer service equipment to install the approved calibration. The recall does not call for replacing the SCR catalyst, NOx sensors, diesel particulate filter, DEF tank, injectors, or other emissions hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because several products and services that may sound relevant do not perform this recall:

  • Aftermarket tunes: These are not the manufacturer recall calibration and may create separate emissions, warranty, or legal issues.
  • Emissions deletes: Removing or disabling emissions equipment is not a recall remedy and may violate applicable law.
  • DEF additives or fuel additives: These cannot install the required engine-control software.
  • Generic repair parts: Replacing a sensor or emissions component is not the same as completing the software campaign.
  • OBD scanners: A scanner can read codes or readiness data, but it cannot install Recall 67A or VB6.

Before leaving the dealership, ask for confirmation that the campaign was completed successfully and whether the technician found unrelated diagnostic trouble codes. A recall repair may not fix a pre-existing mechanical or emissions-system fault that is outside the campaign.

Why some owners are reluctant to accept the update

Owners’ hesitation is understandable. A change to engine-control software can raise questions about throttle response, towing behavior, regeneration frequency, fuel economy, power, and future emissions-system repairs. Diesel owners who have modified their trucks may also worry about compatibility with aftermarket equipment.

Those are legitimate questions to ask the dealer, but they should not be confused with verified outcomes. The official EPA material establishes the purpose of the remedy and says that no hardware change is required. It does not establish that every truck will gain or lose a particular amount of horsepower, torque, fuel economy, reliability, or drivability.

There is no responsible basis for promising a universal mileage improvement or decline. Results can depend on the truck’s condition, operating environment, load, maintenance, calibration history, and any nonstandard equipment. Owners with aftermarket tuning or other modifications should disclose them to the dealer and ask how they affect recall completion and warranty coverage.

What warranty coverage may follow the recall?

As part of the settlement, Cummins is to provide extended warranty protection for certain emissions-control parts and systems on qualifying vehicles. The coverage applies to vehicles that receive the recall software, vehicles that already received the recall software, and certain late-2019 trucks originally produced with the recall software.

NHTSA-hosted materials provide more specific coverage language for qualifying 2013–2019 Ram 2500 and 3500 vehicles after completion of VB6 or 67A. Coverage is subject to the vehicle’s configuration, mileage, time limits, and other conditions. It is not a promise that every truck receives identical protection or that every repair will be covered.

Ask the dealer to print or explain the emissions-warranty terms attached to your VIN. Keep the recall repair order because it may be needed when requesting covered service later. If you bought the truck used, ask specifically whether the extended coverage transfers and which components are included.

The $500 incentive has already expired

On February 17, 2026, Cummins announced a limited incentive for eligible owners of 2013–2018 Ram trucks with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel who completed Recall 67A during the offer period.

  • Standard incentive: A $500 prepaid Mastercard for eligible approved participants.
  • Early-completion incentive: The first 750 approved participants who completed the recall by March 31, 2026 could receive $1,000 instead.
  • General completion deadline: May 31, 2026.
  • Claim-submission deadline: June 21, 2026.

Because the current date for this article is August 13, 2026, those deadlines have passed. Unless Cummins publishes a newer official offer, owners should not schedule the recall expecting a $500 or $1,000 payment.

The incentive helps explain the headline’s “desperate” wording: Cummins was willing to provide a cash-equivalent benefit to increase recall completion. But “desperate” is editorial characterization, not a documented finding about Cummins’ financial condition, internal decision-making, or owner response.

Do you need to buy anything?

No. The recall remedy itself is a dealer-installed software update, and the owner should not need to buy an additive, replacement emissions part, tune, or diagnostic device to obtain it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An optional OBD2 scanner for diesel trucks can be useful for owners who want to document diagnostic trouble codes or inspect emissions-monitor readiness before or after service. Modern diesel systems have monitors associated with equipment such as NOx/SCR systems and particulate filters, and scan tools can provide information that may help an owner communicate with a repair shop.

However, a scanner is only a diagnostic aid. It cannot determine every aspect of campaign eligibility, it cannot replace the dealer’s manufacturer service equipment, and it cannot perform Recall 67A or VB6. Do not buy one solely because you believe it will install the recall.

Owner checklist

  • Find the complete 17-character VIN.
  • Check the official Ram/Mopar recall system.
  • Ask an authorized Ram dealer to verify the campaign and prior completion history.
  • Schedule the no-cost software update if the VIN is eligible.
  • Tell the dealer about aftermarket tuning or nonstandard emissions equipment.
  • Obtain a repair order documenting the campaign number and completion.
  • Ask for the emissions-warranty terms that apply to your VIN.
  • Ignore advertisements claiming that an additive, scanner, or aftermarket tune performs the recall.

Bottom line for Ram Cummins owners

If your Ram 2500 or 3500 falls within the covered VIN range, completing the recall is a dealer-service decision—not a parts-buying decision. The update is intended to address the emissions-control software identified in the Cummins settlement, and the settlement may provide additional emissions-system warranty protection for qualifying trucks.

Check the VIN before drawing conclusions. Some 2013–2015 trucks are excluded, 2019 eligibility depends heavily on production date, and the EPA lists 2020–2023 trucks as not requiring this particular recall. The 2026 payment offer is over unless a new official program is announced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Recall 67A?

Recall 67A is an emissions software update for eligible Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel trucks. The dealer reflashes the engine-control software; it is not a hardware replacement, aftermarket tune, or emissions delete.

Is every 6.7-liter Cummins Ram recalled?

No. Eligibility depends on the VIN, model year, production date, equipment, and sometimes the SCR-controller configuration. Check the official Ram/Mopar recall system or ask an authorized Ram dealer.

Can an OBD2 scanner perform the Cummins recall update?

No. A generic OBD2 scanner can read diagnostic trouble codes and emissions-monitor readiness, but it cannot install Recall 67A or VB6. The reflash requires the dealer’s manufacturer service equipment.

Is Cummins still paying Ram owners $500 for the recall?

The documented 2026 offer provided $500 to eligible owners who completed Recall 67A during the offer period, while the first 750 approved participants who completed it by March 31, 2026 could receive $1,000. Completion ended May 31, 2026 and claims ended June 21, 2026, so it should be treated as expired as of August 13, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What warranty do owners receive after the recall?

Cummins is providing extended warranty protection for certain emissions-control parts and systems on qualifying vehicles, but coverage depends on the VIN, configuration, mileage, time limits, and other terms. Ask the dealer for the warranty documentation tied to your truck.

The Bottom Line

Check the VIN, not just the model year. Eligible Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel trucks receive a no-cost dealer-installed software reflash, with possible extended emissions-system warranty coverage. The $500/$1,000 Cummins incentive was a time-limited 2026 promotion and is not currently confirmed as available.
