The redesigned 2026 U.S. Outback is listed with two gasoline engines. Subaru has introduced a newer hybrid system for the Japan-market Crosstrek, making an Outback hybrid plausible, but that technology announcement is not an Outback plan.
Is a hybrid Outback officially confirmed?
No. Subaru Corporation’s April 18, 2025 announcement of the seventh-generation 2026 U.S. Outback names two engines: a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter BOXER and a turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER. It lists Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness trims, but does not identify a hybrid option.
Subaru of America’s 2026 Outback overview and vehicle lineup likewise classify the Outback as gas-powered, while listing hybrid options for some Crosstrek and Forester models. These are the current U.S. pages; model information can change as Subaru makes future announcements.
What hybrid technology does Subaru have?
Subaru announced a next-generation hybrid system on October 17, 2024, with the Japan-market Crosstrek as its first stated application. The system is series-parallel: depending on driving conditions, the engine or electric motor can provide power. Subaru describes a horizontally opposed 2.5-liter engine and mechanical all-wheel drive, with a propeller shaft connecting the front and rear wheels. That description establishes Subaru’s technology, not a specification for a future Outback.

- ✅Batter dimensions: 10.75" L x 6.81" W x 8.98" H, Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). ✅Please ensure to verify the dimensions and terminal position before making a purchase to guarantee compatibility with your vehicle to avoid any fitment issues.
- With a 70AH capacity and 710 cold cranking amps (CCA). Provides reliable performance and long service life, Up to 2 times the cycle life of conventional batteries. If your car's original battery is an AGM type, you must continue using an AGM battery, as your car will not accept a "downgrade" to a flooded battery. Nominal Voltage:12V. Charging Voltage:14.4~15.0V. Acceptable Charging Current:0~21A. Operating Temperature Range: -22°F~158°F.
- Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
- Low Self-Discharge: AGM batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
- Enhanced Safety: AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components, this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.
In its technical release, corrected December 6, 2024, Subaru lists an 88 kW maximum-output traction motor, a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, and a 63-liter fuel tank for the described system and Japan-market application. Subaru says the system improves fuel consumption by approximately 20% compared with its previous hybrid system. That is Subaru’s stated system comparison—not U.S. EPA fuel economy or an Outback estimate.
Why the range claim needs context
Subaru initially said the Japan-market Crosstrek hybrid’s theoretical range exceeded 1,000 km on a tank, calculated from WLTC fuel consumption and tank capacity. The company’s December 6, 2024 correction removed that figure and replaced it with “a significantly extended cruising range.” The withdrawn estimate should not be treated as a current claim, and it was never an Outback range figure.

Where did the 2027 or 2028 timing come from?
Car and Driver’s November 20, 2025 article, “Why We Think a Subaru Outback Hybrid Is Coming for 2027,” forecasts a possible 2027 model and allows that it could be 2028. The publication bases that expectation on Subaru’s hybrid models and product cadence, and acknowledges uncertainty. It is an automotive-media forecast, not a Subaru announcement, confirmed launch date, or reported specification.
What does Subaru publish for the 2026 gasoline Outback?
Subaru of America’s 2026 Outback comparison table lists the following highway/city MPG figures by trim group. These are Subaru’s published model specifications, not independent real-world test results.

- High density negative paste, improves performance and increases battery life
- Enhanced life alloy or Silver Calcium stamped alloy increases cycle life and improves performance, High density plate oxide provides for maximum power-per-pound and dependable high cycling service
- Calcium Lead positive grid, maximizes conductivity and allows for low resistance
- Robust Envelope Separator with puncture-resistant back, allows for increased acid circulation and prevents shorts. Improved acid circulation, helps the battery to remain cool, and extend battery life
- Vent cap design that resists acid leakage
- You need a vehicle soon: The 2026 Outback has announced trims, engines, and published fuel-economy figures. Compare the current models against your needs rather than relying on an unconfirmed hybrid timetable.
- You want a known powertrain: Subaru has documented the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated and 2.4-liter turbocharged engine choices for the 2026 Outback.
- You are willing to wait for a hybrid: Treat the timing and specifications as unknown until Subaru announces an Outback hybrid. Do not assume that the Japan-market Crosstrek system—or a forecast for 2027 or 2028—will translate directly to the U.S. Outback.
For a future update, the most relevant signals are a Subaru announcement naming the Outback and hybrid powertrain, followed by U.S. model pages with actual trims and specifications. Until then, Subaru’s hybrid technology is real, but an Outback application remains unconfirmed.
