Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro reportedly gave engineers a target of between just under 1,000 and 1,200 kg (about 2,200 to 2,646 lb). That is an engineering target—not a final curb-weight specification—and the available figures do not prove the historical “lightest ever” claim.
What Mazda has said about the next MX-5’s weight
In an August 3, 2026 report, MotorTrend said Moro described the next-generation MX-5’s target weight in an interview with Germany’s auto motor und sport. MotorTrend also reported that Mazda confirmed it is considering development of the next-generation car and said Moro’s remarks were accurate. The reported range is broad: just under 1,000 to 1,200 kg. MotorTrend’s report characterizes it as a target for engineers, not a production specification.
Moro’s reported goal is to keep the structure light without relying on exotic materials. MotorTrend quotes him as saying, “The challenge for us is to make the basic structure lighter without using exotic materials like carbon fiber.” The same report attributes the target range to him, adding, “And I believe we can achieve that.” These statements are relayed by MotorTrend from the interview.
Does that make it the lightest Miata ever?
It does not establish that claim. The reported range includes possible outcomes on both sides of 1,000 kg, and the reporting does not provide comparable curb weights for every MX-5 generation and configuration. A historical ranking would also need to account for differences in market, trim, powertrain, body style and weighing convention. Without that like-for-like comparison, “lightest ever” remains unverified.

How the target compares with one current MX-5
For context, Mazda México lists a curb weight of 1,066 kg for the 2026 MX-5 i Sport with a 2.0-liter engine and manual transmission. That is a specific Mexican-market configuration, not a universal weight for 2026 MX-5 models. The figure comes from Mazda México’s 2026 specifications.

Why the weight target leaves room for powertrain changes
The next MX-5’s final powertrain has not been established by these reports. MotorTrend describes Moro’s comments as addressing readiness for a scenario without a combustion engine; GoAuto’s August 4, 2026 account similarly says the successor may need to accommodate evolving regulations and possible battery-electric power. That is discussion of flexibility, not confirmation that an electric MX-5 will enter production. GoAuto’s report corroborates the broad weight-target framing but is also secondary reporting of the interview.

Mazda North American Operations describes the 2026 MX-5 as the fourth generation, which debuted for the 2016 model year. Its January 27, 2026 announcement covers the current car’s packaging and pricing, not a production weight for its successor. Mazda’s announcement therefore provides model-year context but does not fill the gap in a generation-by-generation weight comparison.
