Otherlab’s Lightfoot combines body-mounted solar panels with a conventional wall-outlet charger; the manufacturer claims up to 18 miles of solar range per day and up to 37 miles on a full charge. Those figures are product claims, not independent test results.
How the Lightfoot’s solar charging works
Lightfoot is a seated, two-wheel electric cargo scooter with solar panels integrated into its sides. Its maker describes it as “A sun-powered cargo scooter for the short trips that shape your days.” The product is aimed at errands, grocery runs, school pickup and other short urban journeys.
The manufacturer lists a 240 W solar system and claims it can add up to 18 miles of range per day from sunlight. Electrek reports that Lightfoot estimates 3–4 miles of range per hour in good sunlight. Actual solar contribution will depend on conditions, including how much direct sun the parked scooter receives; the available sources do not provide independent solar-output measurements. The panels therefore offer a way to replenish some energy, not a dependable substitute for charging in every commute or climate.
A standard wall outlet remains an option. Lightfoot lists a 52 V, 1,560 Wh battery and says its onboard charger can bring it to full in four hours. The charger is built into the scooter, so owners can plug in rather than rely on sunlight when solar gains are insufficient.

Range, speed and utility specifications
Lightfoot lists up to 37 miles of range on a full charge and a 20 mph top speed. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified road-test results. The company also lists two motors with 1,000 W peak power each; Electrek describes them as 750 W nominal geared hub motors, one in each wheel. The maker’s listed total torque is 160 Nm.
| Specification | Lightfoot’s published figure |
|---|---|
| Full-charge range | Up to 37 miles, manufacturer claim |
| Solar contribution | Up to 18 miles per day, manufacturer claim |
| Top speed | 20 mph, manufacturer specification |
| Battery | 52 V, 1,560 Wh, manufacturer specification |

| Curb weight | 141 lb, manufacturer specification |
| Cargo capacity | 1.5 cubic feet of lockable, weatherproof storage |
Its two-person bench and enclosed cargo compartment make it more utility-oriented than a typical stand-up scooter. The 141 lb curb weight is also relevant if you need to move it by hand, store it indoors or take it somewhere a conventional bicycle would be easier to manage.

Could it cover your daily commute?
Start with your actual round-trip distance, then consider how the scooter will be parked and charged. A commute comfortably inside the maker’s claimed 37-mile full-charge range may suit the battery capacity, but hills, speed, payload, weather and riding conditions can affect real-world range. The stated 18-mile solar contribution is an upper-end daily claim, not a daily allowance every owner should expect.
- Solar is more plausible as a meaningful top-up if the scooter can sit in good sunlight during the day.
- An outlet matters if your parking is shaded, indoors or otherwise unsuitable for solar charging, or if your trips use more energy than the panels replace.
- Check the practical fit of the 1.5-cubic-foot cargo compartment, passenger bench and 141 lb weight against your errands, storage and parking arrangements.
Lightfoot has not published independent performance comparisons with competing scooters in the sources available here, so its claimed range alone cannot establish that it will be cheaper, more comfortable or more reliable than another commuter option.

Where can you ride it, and do you need a license?
Electrek reports that Otherlab markets the Lightfoot for city streets and bike lanes and says it does not require licensing or registration. That is not a nationwide legal determination. State and local rules can differ, and a product’s marketing category or 20 mph top speed does not by itself settle where it may be ridden or what requirements apply.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it does not define marketing terms such as “motor scooter”; it also explains that manufacturers are responsible for certifying vehicles subject to applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards. Separately, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection ruling dated January 14, 2025, classified the Lightfoot under a tariff category for electric motorcycles and cycles with an auxiliary motor. That customs classification addresses tariff treatment, not bike-lane access, licensing or registration. Check the rules in your state and municipality before riding.
