Audi says the final R8 left the Böllinger Höfe production line in March 2024. In its retrospective, the company reported that 45,949 cars had been built since the model began in 2007. Why a Lamborghini connection is plausible—and still uncertain
Sharing expensive engineering across Audi Group brands could make a new supercar more viable than developing every major component for a low-volume Audi alone. It could also give Audi a technical base to adapt while creating a product with its own identity. That is the business logic behind speculation about Lamborghini helping with a future R8; it is not evidence that Audi has selected a platform or approved a program.

Carsales and Autoblog have discussed the Lamborghini Temerario’s hybrid V8 setup as a possible source of technology for a future R8. If Audi does proceed, sharing technology would not by itself settle what makes the car an R8. Audi would still need to decide what engineering, design, driving character, and practical qualities distinguish it from its Lamborghini counterpart. No public announcement establishes those choices.

Audi’s conditions for a new halo car
In April 2026, Carsales reported that Audi Sport boss Rolf Michl said a halo car would need to deliver technological impact and make a sound business case. He also said final timing had not been locked in. Those are criteria for considering a high-profile model, not confirmation that Audi has approved an R8 successor.
“A halo car, for me, has two functions: first of all, to show Vorsprung Durch Technik, like the R8 – first V8, first V10. The second thing is to also have an impact on the brand,” Michl told Carsales.

Is Audi’s Nuvolari the R8 successor?
No. In an August 2026 interview, Audi technology chief Rouven Mohr said the limited-run Nuvolari “was never planned as a successor of the R8.” He described it as a different halo model connected with Audi’s Formula One entry. There is no confirmed launch year, price, output, battery range, production number, engine, or platform for a hypothetical successor. If Audi announces a car, the most useful comparisons will be with the Temerario and earlier R8s: powertrain and electrification, shared versus Audi-specific engineering, body style and usability, performance and price, production volume, and launch timing. Until then, any detailed specification or schedule would be guesswork.
