He expects some Indian buyers to reconsider sedans as the market matures, particularly households buying a second car. His comments point to a continuing role for the Škoda Slavia, while leaving any future model plans unconfirmed.
What does Gupta mean by “SUV fatigue”?
In an interview reported by Autocar India on 6 October 2026, Gupta said: “SUVs are the flavour of the season…but as time progresses and as the Indian market matures, the fatigue will lead to people looking at sedans once again because this is the quintessential car.”

That is Gupta’s outlook on how preferences could change, not evidence that Indian buyers have already started turning away from SUVs. The coverage does not cite an independent survey, registration dataset or market forecast demonstrating that SUV fatigue is changing purchase behaviour.
Why might a second car change the decision?
Gupta’s practical example is a household adding another vehicle. As Autocar Professional reported on 4 October 2026, he said: “If you have two cars in a family, you would rather have two body styles or two powertrains,”

The idea is that a family buying a second car may value having a different kind of vehicle, rather than buying another SUV with a similar role. That is a possible reason to consider a sedan; it does not establish how many households will make that choice.
What does the Slavia’s position say about the sedan market?
Gupta’s comments come against a small, competitive midsize sedan segment—not a demonstrated broad-based boom. He estimated the segment at about 4,000–4,500 cars per month and said Škoda and Volkswagen together accounted for almost 70 percent. These are interview-reported estimates, not independently audited market figures. The Slavia’s rivals include the Volkswagen Virtus, Hyundai Verna and Honda City.

Autocar Professional reported Gupta’s estimate that the Slavia contributed 18–20 percent of Škoda’s monthly sales. He also tied the car’s importance to the brand’s identity and its standing in the segment, not just its sales volume. A sedan can therefore remain strategically relevant to Škoda even in a market where SUVs are currently prominent.
How should the Slavia’s reported sales figures be read?
Autocar India reported that Slavia sales averaged about 1,500–1,600 units per month in the prior year, then ran at about 1,000–1,100 per month during the current-year run-out phase ahead of the facelift. Gupta expected the facelift to help sales return to earlier levels. Separately, Autocar Professional reported a facelift target of about 1,400–1,500 units per month.

Those figures describe different things: a prior-year average, sales during a run-out period, and a target. They should not be treated as equivalent evidence of either a completed recovery or a market-wide sedan revival.
Does Gupta’s outlook confirm a new Slavia or future sedan?
No specific successor or future sedan product is confirmed in the reported comments. Gupta said product decisions depend on customers, market volumes and profitability. His expectation that interest in sedans could return does not guarantee that Škoda will launch a particular model.

Autocar Professional also reported that the facelift adds an eight-speed torque-converter automatic option for the 1.0-litre TSI, while the 1.5-litre TSI retains a seven-speed DSG. Reported equipment varies by trim and includes a 360-degree camera, a larger digital instrument cluster, rear-seat massage, and electrically adjustable, ventilated front seats. Because specifications and availability can change, check Škoda’s current local listings or confirm details with a dealer before relying on them for a purchase.
