A report published October 6, 2026, describes a black Chery SUV with its rear axle on the ground and both rear wheels still attached near AEON Tebrau in Johor. The driver was not reported injured. The report does not identify the SUV’s model or VIN, establish why the axle detached, or confirm any connection to a recall.
What happened in Johor?
The Rakyat Post’s October 6, 2026 report says the SUV was photographed near a Caltex station by AEON Tebrau. The outlet attributed the photos and account to Facebook user 江昭上, who said the vehicle belonged to his friend. The report describes the rear axle on the ground behind the vehicle, with both wheels still attached, and says the driver was not reported injured.
The report does not name the model, provide a VIN, cite an official investigation, or establish a mechanical cause. It also does not include a response from Chery or a government authority about this particular event.
Is this the OMODA 5 involved in Malaysia’s 2024 recall?
That connection is unconfirmed. A separate campaign in 2024 concerned identified OMODA 5 vehicles; the October 2026 report does not say the Johor SUV was an OMODA 5 or establish that its VIN was included.

What Chery and JPJ said about the 2024 campaign
On April 29, 2024, Chery Malaysia said it was in contact with the customer involved in a separate OMODA 5 axle incident, inspecting the vehicle, and reaching out to affected customers. It offered concerned owners inspections at service centres and a report on inspected vehicles. Chery Malaysia’s April 29 statement
In a May 4, 2024 statement, Chery said the campaign covered 600 OMODA 5 vehicles whose rear axles were produced between August 14 and 17, 2023. The company reported that 60 vehicles had affected parts. Based on its internal investigation and vendor information, Chery attributed the issue to miscalibration after a worn automated welding-machine tip was replaced during a facility upgrade. JPJ announced on May 3, 2024, that 600 identified OMODA 5 vehicles were subject to an immediate recall. It required inspection and free replacement of affected axle components and said it would monitor the process. JPJ’s recall notice
How can Chery owners check for a pending update?
- Open Chery Malaysia’s product-update page.
- Enter the vehicle’s VIN in the checker to see whether a product update is pending.
- If the vehicle is affected, use the page to schedule a free update at an authorized Chery service centre.
For a concern about axle integrity, use the authorized inspection process rather than attempting to diagnose or repair the component at home.

Does this incident show that Chinese cars are unsafe?
No country-wide conclusion follows from this report. The article quotes a social-media comment by 江昭上 saying, “Chinese cars cannot be bought. Chinese products look beautiful, but everyone knows the quality.” That is an individual’s reaction, not evidence establishing vehicle quality. The sources reviewed provide no comparative failure rate for Chinese cars and cars from other countries, or population-level statistic for Chery axle failures.
For an individual vehicle, the relevant facts are its model and VIN, whether a manufacturer or regulator confirms a campaign applies, and the inspection or repair prescribed for that vehicle. The Johor report does not establish those details.
